Was it a bit jarring when young people started calling you ma'am/sir?

OlderSometimesWiser · F Best Comment
Yeah, I was 12. And they called me sir. Pissed me off. 😒

@OlderSometimesWiser I would be too😂
@TheOthetAcc Well thank you for BC. It may help soften the blow. Yet I still weep bitter tears. 😒

I was raised to call anyone that as it was a respect thing but personally I can't stand it.

I remember forklift training a guy that kept calling me ma'am. I asked him if he ever failed a forklift test...he said No ma'am...I said your about to if you call me that again 😒

It first happened to me when I was 19 years old! A little kid at a campground addressed me that way, while I was in line to fill a canteen at a water tap.

Yes, that was jarring! 😄

It was jarring when elder people called me sir when I was a kid. It felt like I did something wrong.

Now as a grown person, getting called sir by anybody at all doesn’t affect me in the slightest. I stopped caring what people think of me, unless they say bad things about me. Only then, it’d be a matter of being verbally attacked and I might have to defend myself.

Shrug….I’m just happy they acknowledge my presence!

Mmmhmm.

When your time has changed.

I remember starting work young and popping.

Oh. I thought i was the stuff.

😂

@Umile Oh stop. You are still the stuff 😉

@TheOthetAcc Only in my dreams, but thanks.

No,not at all - it's many years since I was first called "Sir",back then it just suggested to me that I was no longer a kid or a teenager.

The first time somebody called me that I was only 40 and yeah I didn't like it too much.
I've gotten over that. 😁
I married a man with four children. I heard “Grandma” before I heard “Mom.”

THAT shook me up at 30.

I do not accept this at all, I tell them that was my father and grandfather not me
Musicman · 61-69, M
No, not at all. It is just a sign of respect.

Just gotta lean into it🧓

It first started when I was nineteen when a kid called me Sir - in my country it's Uncle instead of Sir- in the supermarket, currently 23 and it's still going on, abit tpo weird for me but this is life lol

No. I worked with kids even when I was in college, so I got an early start.
It’s been so long, I can’t even remember when it first happened, but I wasn’t that old. And it didn’t stop older people from calling me, "kid" (although that’s been awhile, now, too😄).

@bijouxbroussard Could it be the lady was hitting on dad? 👀
@TheOthetAcc I don’t think so. She was very maternal towards both of us. 😊
TheOthetAcc · 36-40, M
@bijouxbroussard It's nice though how the little things make the nicest memories. Glad you and dad have this sort of relationship.

@TheOthetAcc 🤔i suppose it may be out of respect i stand by my stance that is not a god given right but what hell to see those words come from a mouth of a young person the shock can knock you backwards😆
