Was it a bit jarring when young people started calling you ma'am/sir?

I was raised to call anyone that as it was a respect thing but personally I can't stand it.

I remember forklift training a guy that kept calling me ma'am. I asked him if he ever failed a forklift test...he said No ma'am...I said your about to if you call me that again 😒
