On the list of First World concerns…

Say you have a jar of salsa that’s been in your cabinet for say, several years…you’re about to toss it but give it one last try and, you get it open. It smells normal. Do you still close it back up and throw it away, or get out the tortilla chips, throw caution to the winds ?

Update: I poured it out, jar went into the recycling.

@bijouxbroussard probably best idea lol
@bijouxbroussard sensible choice...

Burnley123 · 41-45, M
I would throw if it had been several years.

I know you want those tortillas Bijoux, but this is not the way you want to die.
@bijouxbroussard "she was such a nice lady. If only she hadn't eaten that 37 year old jar of salsa." 😭
@robingoodfellow More like 8 years—but point taken. 😄
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@robingoodfellow Here she lays. RIP.
Ontheroad · M
Sealed jar lid hasn't popped or rusted (inside) and still smells good - go for it!
Selah ·
That's a biological weapon.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I would dip one cautionary chip into it and try it. If it tastes Ok, then....party time!
Piper · 61-69, F
If it smelled okay, I'd taste a little of it. If it tasted fine, I'd go ahead and use it before my tortilla chips got stale.
@Piper I have fresh ingredients to make more salsa (delivered yesterday) so the chips won’t get to go stale. 😁
Piper · 61-69, F
@bijouxbroussard That's good. Mine probably would be, though. Your post reminded me of an opened bag of Fritos "flavor twists" in my pantry, that I thought I'd bought maybe last year. The best by date is May 2019. I did go ahead and discard those...without even tasting one. 😅
firefall · 61-69, M
No, no, close it up and put it back there for another 5 years. Wait to see what new species evolves in it
@firefall Nah, I already tossed the science experiments from the fridge.
Hmmm...several years is a long time.
@robingoodfellow I’ve been making my own salsa since I retired. So it’s old.
@bijouxbroussard yeah I'd...I'd not risk that one lol.
Did you say...several years? 😯
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Just made ceviche with scallops, shrimp, and crab. Has onion, avocado, cilantro, jalapeño pepper, and tomato, lime and lemon juice. How long will it last? Have about three servings left.
Elessar · 26-30, M
I know personally someone who ended up in the hospital after having a similar thought with an egg that had expired a few months before and however eventually decided to eat it almost raw in carbonara 🙆‍♂️
Yeah, I've heard we Westerners might waste about a quarter of our food - and so much else... "fast" fashions, excessive packaging, luxuries and conveniences we don't use or get bored with... like spoilt kids.
We have charities over here that collect the almost out of date foods from Over here, supermarkets give their almost out of date foods to the soup kitchens.

Three cheers for you recycling. We do too.

Ari's all for tasting if it smells okay. I wait for his reaction.
My nose is a lot more sensitive so sometimes I reject things he find fine.

If our food goes off before we eat it, I give it to the birds, worm farm or compost heap.
One way or another, the waste fertilises our next bed of veggies.
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
Several years? I don't think it would be safe to consume anymore 🤔.
@SubstantialKick That’s the majority consensus.
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
@bijouxbroussard Yeah. Unless you want to be spending a lot of time in the bathroom. Lol.
craig7 · 70-79, M
Salsa,been there for several years - I'd throw out the contents and recycle the jar.
@craig7 Check the edit…
Pfuzylogic · M
You could use a stray as a test subject. 🧐
Would that be poisoning though?
@Pfuzylogic I think so. I threw it out.
Pfuzylogic · M
@bijouxbroussard
I agree…food poisoning is just not worth saving a couple of dollars.
sciguy18 · M
I would smell it first. If okay, then I would taste it. If it seems fine, I would eat it.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
What is salsa made of?
@CrazyMusicLover This salsa had tomatoes, chilies, corn and black beans. It was a brand I liked. But I’ve since learned how to make it myself.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@bijouxbroussard I guess your own is much better so no loss if you tossed it away.
ElRengo · 70-79, M
Sounds like reflections about a husband.......🙁
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I either read the sell-by/expiration date on the jar or ask my wife to sniff it and tell me if it's okay.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, FVIP
Yeah... I wouldn't take the chance.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I'd have done the same.
Northwest · M
I would throw it out, and head out to the store to buy fresh salsa.
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether Yep. It’s tossed.
SW-User
I’d eat it 🤣
@SW-User Too late, now. 😅

Mmm... botulism....
@DunningKruger Gotcha. Out it goes.
This is how people get really sick.
Its not worth it.
@nonsensiclesnail That seems to be what most are saying. There will be other salsas. 😊
Lilymoon · F
Throw it out 🤢
@Lilymoon Yep, just did.
Good call to chuck it out. Side note how do you make your salsa?
Dino11 · M
Food poisoning is not fun...
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
When in doubt, throw it out. I'm sure, under a microscope, there's stuff that looks like scenes from Where The Wild Things Are.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
You've been in my basement?
SarithBorn · 18-21, M
Throw it, its too risky imo. 😇
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
Several years, I’d give it to the opossums.
Teslin · M
Several years !! Trash !!!
Well now....it depends .

Is it 2am ?
Am i righteously drunk
And do i have copious amounts of cheese to smother it with ?🤔
SW-User
It won't be bad, it won't kill you, but some bbf dates also mean "loses flavour, isn't as good, not what you'd like to expect from our product" it's not gonna hurt but possibly won't be great if included in a recipe.
@SW-User A pity that salsa is not like wine. 😄
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard I think of all things salsa will be good
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Oh, honey, don't you know? There's such a thing as keto tortilla chips now.
@LordShadowfire I do—I buy them, but the salsa saga is resolved. 😄
MethDozer · M
Feed it to guests and see what happens.
