Brits : Is renting a home in England as impossible as is sounds?

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Rental accommodation is in short supply in many cities which has had an inflationary impact on rents. Many landlords are amateurs and not very good at the business of maintaining a habitable property. The law is not very friendly towards tenants - they can still be evicted for no reason whatsoever.

No. I rent with a friend. I’ve rented elsewhere for the last three years.
London would be a nightmare but otherwise it’s fine.
@Ceinwyn London is a nightmare 🤣

Yep

I left my flat as rent went up over 25% this year

Shared with a guy but that didn't work out.

If @OldBrit hadn't "known a guy" who had a house to rent and he'd not been so generous I wouldn't have had a place.

Luckily I've just bought that off the landlord but renting is a nightmare in UK now. Dozens going for places, rents going through the roof etc etc

Probably no different to anywhere else in the G7
Ye,unless if you have the luxury to work from home or are ok being limited in Ur employment options or are ok w having roommates until you did, most properties are over evaluated

what amuses me is just how people pay more to rent a victorian era apartment than what others pay on mortgage for a modern home...🤔
KatyO83 · 36-40, F
@wildbill83 but it's about two other things.

Can you get a deposit together? Since the 2008 financial crash in UK it's been required to get a 10% deposit. That's what for ages stopped me buying I couldn't get 30k together.

Secondly can you get a mortgage? If you're on a temporary contract then many mortgage providers won't lend or need bigger deposit or add to your interest rate. My friend her husband is a plumber so not on a perm contract the house is totally in her name to reduce the mortgage repayment even though he earns £80k and her about £45k.

Ive just bought my house from my landlord. I've opted to have my mortgage payment lower than my old rent but remember I now am liable for all repairs etc whereas before if many things broke landlord would have to fix it.

Probably a joke but why the hell would they go back? Plenty of countries to go to.

Rents have gone up of course. However it is no worse than other Western country.Outside of London you can rent a house quite easily.City centre apartments can be more expensive than a house outside of city centres.
Landlords cannot put up rents too much because then no one can afford to pay that rent leaving property empty. It can be very difficult to evict bad tennants even ones that decide not to pay their rent.
Yep
Economy is so bad landlords are evicting people and selling their properties
The UK is a dying country. Get out while you can.

@TrunkZ that might be a selling point for some horny landlords
As long as it's not London, it's fine
