I'm lucky to have access to a lot of different kinds of fish. I don't have a favorite. Lots of good stuff from Florida, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, etc. Pollock is extremely mild flavored. About the only fish I don't care for is mackerel...too oily and mushy in texture for my preference. Although, I've caught Sierra Mackerel in Mexico and that's delicious.
emmasfriend · 46-50, F
Yesterday I had herring for lunch and salmon for dinner after a starter of scallops and prawns.
Tonight I shall have sea bass.
I eat almost any fish except tuna and basa.
Salmon, cod, haddock (plain & smoked), Dover sole & lemon sole all feature in my diet.
Oysters, lobster are my luxuries, prawns and scallops more regular fare.
Mussels too - delicious in white wine sauce with garlic.
Also eat both red and white meats !

@emmasfriend seafood here of all types is expensive. Yet some are cheaper than others.
Chicken even with the bird flue going around is still cheaper than seafood.
Seafood is more in comparison to beef now. Of course with the exception of tuna. I do try to limit on tuna because of the mercury found in it.

Grouper is my favorite. Hard to get it fresh here though. Sometimes.
For a fish i can get regularly, it would be walleye. Lake perch is good too.
Pollack and cod both, make great fried fish. Hard to overcook(not too hard) and it is very mild.
Thinking about it🤔...i reckon my favorite fish is the one i can get that is the most fresh and prepared well.
Except salmon. Ive never liked it. Any way.

@Carla I agree with the salmon. I don't recall seeing any Grouper here yet that's a Atlantic fish. Not a Pacific fish.

I cook a lot with Pollock - here in the UK it's one of the cheaper white-fish, and no less good because of that
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@ArtieKat I just don't understand some people. This was a gift because they have never tried it and didn't want to take the chance.
I doubt if she knew how good it was she would have gotten rid of it.

@DeWayfarer I know what you mean! I love a bargain lol :-)
ElwoodBlues · M
Swordfish, if properly cooked.
It's a very unforgiving fish; easy to overcook. Salmon is my 2nd most favorite, and it's about the most forgiving fish in the world!

@ElwoodBlues I have only had it twice in my whole life!
The first time I was just a kid and made in a five star restaurant in Newport Beach!
My dad wanted me to become familiar with that type of lifestyle.

@DeWayfarer We cook it at home on the grill. In the summer it's usually around $22/lb; comparable in price to expensive steak. Sword didn't used to be so expensive, and my dad was an expert swordfish cook. I learned from him.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@ElwoodBlues Sorry yet at $22 lb it's too expensive.
I have had recently beefalo at $15 a pound last year.

I love fish so much it’s hard to pick one favorite, but likely if I had to it would be Grouper. I live close to the Atlantic Ocean.

@jshm2 I fried it in a caste iron skillet with extra virgin olive oil and butter. Then simmered it with about a shot of triple Sec. Fried up some onions and garlic. Then top it all off with lemon juice. Salt and pepper of course! 🤣
Add cooked egg noodles and peas with soy sauce to accompany it all.
My cooking style like my politics tends to be egalitarian.

@jshm2 it turned out perfect. Probably because of amount of butter I used. I don't short butter in cooking.

Just eaten some very nice baked smoked haddock. I have prawns in the fridge for snacking on. Most fish are delicious.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@FreddieUK have loads of shrimp in the freezer as well.
BrandNewMan · M
Hogfish .. but not easy to get. Things like Cobia, pampano, grouper, snapper, haddock, redfish, mahi mahi, swordfish, halibut, tuna and cod are high on saltwater list. Walleye, crappie, catfish, trout for freshwater. Then salmon that sees time in both.
bijouxbroussard · F
I love that, too. I also like cod, sole and tilapia.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@bijouxbroussard i love talapia! And haddock is a fave. Not a fan of pollock tho!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@RubySoo posted how I made this below.
Perhaps that might make a difference.

I'm not sophisticated enough to be able to tell them apart.lol I grew up eating a lot of catfish tho. Yum yum
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Selah catfish was the very first fish that I ever caught. And I caught it with my hands at around ten years old.
My half brother made me throw it back! 🤣

I love halibut… but it’s very expensive here in Sweden.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Adeptlinguist if you ever get the chance to have mahi mahi like someone mentioned below, do try it. Yet where you are it would likely be even more expensive then halibut there.
Here it's outrageous because it's a Hawaiian fish. Alaskan fish of all types is far cheaper.

all fish, salmon, cod flounder, halibut, oysters and clams on a half shell with cold beer, caviar on toast points with champagne or chilled vodka

@saragoodtimes you do know that whales and dolphins are mammals 🙃
saragoodtimes · F
@DeWayfarer tuna are the dumbest fish. we don't eat canned dolphin that says tuna safe
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@saragoodtimes well neither are legal here. 🙃

@DeWayfarer I just try to mush up the bones and make them into patties
IM5688 · 61-69, M
Do you mean less boneless and less fishy tasting?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@IM5688 I mean that I didn't find one bone out of three third pound pieces. Taste is subjective, yet to me it didn't taste fishy at all.
I ate all three pieces in one sitting.

@DeWayfarer I think in where i am we only import salmon mostly from norwegia. And its not canned. Just frozen.
And I’m not really into imported fish cz i believe our body designed to consume what’s around us.

@DeecemberGirl well this Pollock was definitely not canned. About ⅓ pound slices. I ate three of them. 🤣
DeecemberGirl · 31-35, F
@DeWayfarer ahh i see. We dont have it here. But it must taste really good that you ate it that much. Haha
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Mackerel, hake, sardines, pollock . . but more generally whatever is freshest and cheapest on the fishmonger's slab.

Red Emperor.. coal reef fish.. From the great barrier reef Australia.. 👍
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Adstar that would be a real treat, I expect here in the USA.
Yet don't you folks limit the export of those types of fish?
China is complaining about that, I believe, as well as some Muslim countries.
Not that the USA is complaining. Nor is anyone else.

It's not a bully either like salmon with a bone in every bite.
I don't like my food playing nasty tricks on me.
