Sometimes a sense memory is triggered so profoundly, that the person may smell or taste an aroma. These are often things the individual has been exposed to in the past -- like brewed coffee.
If an aroma is present in the absence of an apparent source or visual cue, it may be synesthesia.
Accompanying visual cues, it's called olfactorization.
I get the acrid-sweet smell of jet fuel if a plane is taxiing by on tv.
Or the grease and diesel, and tar of a construction tractor parked in a lot with my windows up.

I'm not sure were the smells live. But I know that sights, and locations have smells. I know in my mind, I can smell hamburgers cooking when I drive south on the New Jersey Turnpike, between exit 14, and 13. I can remember smelling that when I was around 6, and I was with my father. Years later when I was 19 I was hauling gasoline out of Linden NJ, I would pass through there every day. I could always smell the same hamburgers. I finally remembered where the smell originated from. Dad, and I had stopped in South Hackensack for hamburgers, and we were eating them as we were driving south on the Turnpike.

I'd guess it's more likely in the brain. 😅 So a hallucination.

I'm told that olfactory hallucinations, particularly those of the smell of something burning (like that of burnt toast) often precede a Grand Mal seizure. In the 1930's, Canadian neurosurgeon, Dr. Wilder Pennfield discovered this connection by probing the brain of one of his patients with electrodes.

My sense of smell died last year when I came down with pneumonia...and really never came back. I developed asthma afterward, and can't smell anything. Till today.
Today, my whole apartment filled with a lovely fresh clean laundry smell...sort of like Gain Fresh Scents...just lovely. I was astonished that I could smell it!

I've heard people experiencing paranormal things perceiving smells that aren't really there, but are taking place on a paranormal level

Phantosmia has a number of causes from URTI to stroke. If it keeps happening see a doctor.
