Can smells live in your nose and come out unexpectedly?

I'm not sure were the smells live. But I know that sights, and locations have smells. I know in my mind, I can smell hamburgers cooking when I drive south on the New Jersey Turnpike, between exit 14, and 13. I can remember smelling that when I was around 6, and I was with my father. Years later when I was 19 I was hauling gasoline out of Linden NJ, I would pass through there every day. I could always smell the same hamburgers. I finally remembered where the smell originated from. Dad, and I had stopped in South Hackensack for hamburgers, and we were eating them as we were driving south on the Turnpike.
