I've had milk 5 days past the best buy date, which tasted perfectly fresh and fine, and also I've poured out curdled milk two days BEFORE the best buy date. We just can't know if the milk we drink was always properly refrigerated before we bring it home.

@4meAndyou what if it’s been kept cold, smells fine but tastes funny
4meAndyou · F
@Ghostinthemachine If it tastes funny, throw it out!
@4meAndyou Does this apply to people as well?

Sour milk smells and tastes very unpleasant well before you could drink enough of it to be ill.
Even slight souring shows itself; though I have occasionally, accidentally drunk maybe a cup-full (on cereal) without harm.
So perhaps if something is disagreeing with you, it may not be sour milk.

@ArishMell will do, Dr. Nutritionist 🫡
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ghostinthemachine Pardon? I said I'm not a doctor or nutritionist - but that's simply how I'd meet the problem if I was similarly affected. As in I may in fact be.
@ArishMell Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I was just kidding
I interpret that "best" date as the last date to initially break the seal, opening the container for the first time. For milk, once open for the first time it's just a few days before it sours. Interesting that half and half has a very long "best used" date, weeks into the future. Much longer than whole milk or 1% or 2%. What's different about half and half that gives it a longer shelf life?
@Heartlander There’s truth to this.
I opened the first bag and it was bad a few days ago. The current bag is fine, which I just opened two days ago, despite being five days past the best before date.
So I’ll keep on truckin with it. Or should I say “keep on chuggin” 🤭

Just smell it, I feel that’s the best indicator for milk. Better than the dates.
@itsok I do the same, and every time, not just after it expired, you never know when it sat for hours in an hot truck someplace.
@itsok Smells fine. No noticeable chunks yet.
ninalanyon · 70-79, T
It's probably still safe to drink if it is completely sour so long as it is not mouldy.
If it smells good enough to drink then it probably is.

@ninalanyon mouldy milk…🤢

Not too long for me
@Cinderellagirl as I recall, I swallowed a fair amount, and just knowing I did, I felt like throwing up, just thinking about that curdled milk in my belly

Damage is probably done already? Next time, if it smells ok, take a tiny sip but don‘t swallow in case it‘s off.
@Rickichickie If it doesn’t pass the smell test, I don’t follow through. That applies to milk and people 😉
Rickichickie · 61-69, F
@Ghostinthemachine also the tiny sip to taste if the person is off? 😜
@Rickichickie or perhaps a little nibble 😬
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
when it tastes or smells off
but I heard you can still cook with it after it sours. like pancakes.

@StygianKohlrabi I wonder if that’s where places like IHOP get all of their milk to make their pancakes 🤔

Depends on the smell
Ferric67 · M
@Ghostinthemachine well, you wouldn't want it if it was even slightly bad
@Ferric67 Does this apply to people ?
Ferric67 · M
@Ghostinthemachine I suppose it can apply
Did you smell it?
@Bexsy No, because you know what they say: whoever smelled it, dealt it.
@Ghostinthemachine don't think this applies, superhero
@Bexsy well you just tell me where I can apply and I assure you I’ll be the first in line with my application

@SW-User doesn’t it have to become cream before butter? And where does yogurt fit in all of this 🤔

@Ghostinthemachine Exactly... A few extra rows of bricks have got to hold back the radiation somehow....
@HootyTheNightOwl I wasn’t even thinking about the radiation.

If it is good milk you can go about 4:00 but if it comes from like the dollar store or some fuck shit sometimes right on that day or a day after it goes bad I don't know why but it just seems to be like that
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
@Ghostinthemachine yep especially when it get spilled
