I went to a Starbucks

In this branch they have a sign stating that 99% of their coffee is ethically sourced.

Am i weird for thinking that therefore 1% of their coffee is unethically sourced, perhaps grown with slave labour or stolen from subsistence farmers? 🤣🤣

I doubt that they have any real way of verifying their claim.

But in any case, I haven't been to a Starbucks in years.
I don't care for their burnt coffee or their overpriced pastries.
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Slade Ok,I'll take your word for it.But my point is that they make the best coffee ever!
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Thinkerbell Plus, the other stuff they have (food, snacks)is also first rate.
@Thinkerbell Starbucks buys the cheapest beans and over roasts them. I doubt they can back their claim either.

A guy called Marc went to Starbucks. They asked for his name to.put on his cup, he said "Mark with a C". When he got his cup it said Cark.

It's possible that they simply can't be sure of the provenance of all the coffee they buy. I dare say that some of it is bought from brokers rather than direct from the farmers and some of the brokers are not 100% reliable when it comes to the audit trail.

Perhaps they are just being more honest than those who claim 100% ethically sourced.

But in my opinion the real question is this: Why did you go to Starbucks in the first place? The only time I go to Starbucks is when I am in the company of people who think that they have to eat and drink all the time and Starbucks is the only place nearby. If I can plan where to go there is always somewhere better.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@ninalanyon Indeed. In fact I avoid all these American junk-food chains and object not only to the prices but also the pretentiousness (not confined to those chains) of using milk froth and pseudo-Italian to hide that the conveniently-opaque cup holds far less than its volume, of beverage.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ArishMell The last Starbucks I was in was fitted out like the poorest kind of works canteen, just rows of plain chairs and tables in a big glass box. The food was passable and the coffee worse. I was only there because a man from Fabguys.com wanted to meet me and that seemed to be the most convenient for him.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@ninalanyon Fitted out as cheaply as possible, to make as many bucks as possible...
Disgustedman · 61-69, M
Frankly, I want my coffee sourced anyway possible whether it be grand theft, hijacking a load of coffee beans or brutally whipping the workers while they pick the beans and then they go to bed at night crying in agony and sadness and then get up for the next morning and start the whole process again.

Sayyyyyyy, wasn't that happening in Egypt? Maybe those Jews ought to tell the Egyptians hey what about our reparations? 🤣🤣🤣
Juvia · 22-25, F
@Disgustedman ngl I would probably only get involved if there weren't any coffee being shipped for whatever reason
Need me sum of that
Really · 80-89, M
It's just modern advertising: You can say absolutely anything that you think will attract customers. THAT is the ethic.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Mmmmm - it is an odd statistic for it to display. Covering itself perhaps by adding a just a tinge of doubt!
Juvia · 22-25, F
A lot of coffee you see is that way
Unethically sourced
Very common unfortunately
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Their coffee tastes like burnt socks
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Ryannnnnn On a good day.
I.prefer Costa me

I suppose it depends on their definition of “ethically.” The statement by itself is meaningless. Does it mean they didn’t steal it, or slaves were not used, or whatever else is unethical in obtaining coffee.
Juvia · 22-25, F
Starbucks is my guilty pleasure :(

I drink 5 cups of black coffee a day
Any coffee yum
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Juvia Guilty pleasure? To me,5 cups of Starbucks would be like cruel and unusual punishment.Try Wawa coffee. You won't regret it.
Juvia · 22-25, F
@DavidT8899 No, just regular coffee. Starbucks I have with my bf. It's like my cake, a quick something sweets

Maybe 1% of the farmers cheat on their taxes 🤷‍♂️
bugeye · 26-30, F
nah, we just pilfer the last 1% from costa.

Sounds like a boycott will ensue?
CBarson · 51-55
You would be correct
ArishMell · 70-79, M
.... and will or won't again?

The "99%" claim might be shielding. If they claimed 100% people, especially competitors, might question it, or badger them to prove it!
