What is a local traditional food where you live ?

Funtoy4u · 61-69, M

I grew up in the Midwest USA where the Pork Tenderloin is popular.

@MethDozer On the round bread, like you like it.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Screw it, real traditional Albertan food is donair which is our regional variation on doner kebab. Made with beef, typical kebab spices, and a sweet yogurt-garlic sauce. It's incredible.

CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@MethDozer Gyro is a Greek kind of kebab.

Like all of this is just a huge pack of meat mixed with spices on a vertical rotisserie sliced thin and served with stuff and it varies by country, and then varies by which immigrants go where. The big thing about donairs is they are trashier than gyros and thus better when drunk.
MethDozer · M
@CountScrofula I only had gyros, doners seemed like turkish versions.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@MethDozer Yeah. It's like... a whole fuckin' family tree. Think pizza or street dogs. Same basic idea but the variations are all over the place.
Lentils and spaetzle with string sausages

Spatzle are something like homemade pasta, made from a dough consisting of flour, water, eggs and salt. What distinguishes them from conventional pasta is the way they get their shape. Traditionally, the dough is scraped from a wooden board into a pot of boiling water. On the video you can see how this is done.

There are different, easier ways to make spaetzle, for example pressing the dough through a sieve. @RadiantRose

Well in my region of South Africa, our food is heavily influenced by the South Asian population who came here in the 1800s.
So lots of biryani, curries, kormas, etc.

Degbeme · 70-79, M
@goliathtree You can have the livers, I`ll have the fish. 🤤
goliathtree · 56-60, M
@Degbeme Nothing like livers you think of. Used to go down to the dock and get a quart of "guts" to bread and fry.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@goliathtree I love beef liver. Never had fish liver.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Is that pickled herring because fuck yes.

Honestly, our traditional foods come from either immigrant families (for example Ukrainian food is cooked in most families here) or Indigenous peoples (bannock, moose stew, etc..).

The joys of being western Canadian.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@CountScrofula yeah pickled herring on a bun with onions

steamed cheeseburgers. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried them.
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@redredred burgers are sooo good with lean beef and a little breadcrumbs, an egg or two to hold together, chopped onions, spices, and worcestershire sauce, then broiled until crispy on top. 😋
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Sushi and Mediterranean seems to be the rage at the moment.

Salad dressing,
Shore lunch/dinner which is fried fish, a salt pork sandwich, salt potatoes, corn on the cob, and..... wait for it..... French toast.🤷‍♂️
SW-User
@MethDozer Do you also consider that a local traditional food?
MethDozer · M
@SW-User No. I thought the "wait for it" part conveyed the sarcasm. A specific hodge-podge of odd paired foods is the closest thing to a local there is. That and salad dressing
SW-User
@MethDozer Oh, right yeah...
That and salad dressing
Wait...I still don't know how to interpret this.
