Screw it, real traditional Albertan food is donair which is our regional variation on doner kebab. Made with beef, typical kebab spices, and a sweet yogurt-garlic sauce. It's incredible.

@CountScrofula So Turkish food made it to Alberta
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@RadiantRose Sure did! Although it is mostly Lebanese who cook donair out here it originates from Turkish immigrants.

@CountScrofula is doner kebab the same thing as a gyro?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@MethDozer Gyro is a Greek kind of kebab.

Like all of this is just a huge pack of meat mixed with spices on a vertical rotisserie sliced thin and served with stuff and it varies by country, and then varies by which immigrants go where. The big thing about donairs is they are trashier than gyros and thus better when drunk.

@CountScrofula I only had gyros, doners seemed like turkish versions.

@MethDozer Yeah. It's like... a whole fuckin' family tree. Think pizza or street dogs. Same basic idea but the variations are all over the place.
