Who is the most famous person you've met?

For me it was either King Charles (Prince then) or President Jimmy Carter (retired). What about you and what was it like?
RedBaron · M
NYC mayors Ed Koch and Bill Deblasio (and wife Chirlane McCray - they live in my neighborhood), NYS governor George Pataki, actor Corbin Bernsen, MLB players and managers Jim Abbott, Vida Blue, Barry Bonds, Gary Carter, David Cone, Ron Darling, Kevin Elster, Dallas Green, Bud Harrelson, Davey Johnson, Jay Johnstone, Kevin Kennedy, Harmon Killebrew, Ray Knight, Tommy Lasorda, Roger McDowell, Keith Miller, Jim Rooker, Nolan Ryan, Billy Sample (a longtime friend), Art Shamsky, Lee Smith, Darryl Strawberry, Joe Torre, and Mookie Wilson.

I could list even more baseball personalities from the time I spent around the game as a journalist.

I met most of them in professional settings like press conferences, batting practice, and postgame locker rooms, so the interactions were limited.

But in all cases, I found people to be pleasant and down to earth; not that different from the rest us other than their elite talent and notoriety. Some were surprisingly (to me) relaxed and easygoing.

@RedBaron that's great to hear! So good that you had good experiences and thanks for sharing
Forrest Griffin. My sisters were concierge in Vegas, and I’d go with them to events they’d get to go to for free. He was at one, going down the line to take selfies with people. I didn’t want one (never watched his fights at the time), but said I’d just get a pic of him without me in it. He said he felt awkward about that. Then I felt awkward, like saying I’d take a pic of him instead of with him was creeper stuff or something. Not what he said, but I wonder. 😬 I ended up taking the pic anyway.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Colonelmustardseed lol at least he wasn't that rude!
@Soph03 Yeah. He was pretty nice as far as I could tell from his interactions with everyone else. 🙂
Maya Angelou. After she spoke at a college where a friend taught, we went to get her autograph and she invited us to eat with her. She was a great conversationalist, had a wonderful sense of humor. ☺️
@SW-User I’m not sure. I respected much of what he had to say, but he also had some ideas about women that were rather old-fashioned. Perhaps if he’d lived longer those beliefs might’ve evolved.
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard Finally, someone I've heard of and respect 👍
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@bijouxbroussard this is a great example, thanks for sharing!

Margaret Thatcher and Bill Clinton, the old washerwoman at a State Dinner, she was a frump and Bill Clinton at a celebratory dinner at a defence contractor I was working for, they won an award and Clinton attended as the Governor of Arkansas before he became President, he was very tall, quite handsome and friendly too.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@spjennifer That's nice and he probably didn't have lots of bodyguards with him then. Thanks for sharing!
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@Soph03 No, he may well have had some but they were very discrete, I never saw them. It was a dinner at a local country club with lots of food and lots of booze. I was like 22 then so didn't care much about politicians. He did shake my hand and spoke to me for a couple of minutes. My parents were both Foreign Service so I'd met lots of politicians like him but he was the handsomest I'd met.
Blondily · F
Kevin Costner. Didn't meet him but walked by him in Deadwood, SD where he owned the Midnight Star.
He had gotten out of his van and he yelled something at his dad.
He was in a pissy mood ignoring fans as he walked tuwards his casino.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Blondily it must be so sad when you're in a bad mood and so many people won't leave you alone :(
Blondily · F
@Soph03 No one bothered him that day. They just stared. 👀 The price of fame. lol

@Soph03 Yes, that's him :)
Ynotisay · M
I've met a lot, and not all positive encounters, but maybe the coolest was Robin Williams. Just the two of us sat on an out of the way grassy knoll at an event for maybe 20 minutes. I think he was hiding. He came up to me and asked to sit down. We just chatted. Very relaxed. And unlike a lot of celebs he was curious about who I was. That's the mark of a decent person in my opinion.

When i was little Gospel singer Larnelle Harris held me in his arms.

@Soph03 Most are just normal people with a different job. They live in our community and do the same things everybody else does. A few can be jerks, but they are the exception.
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
I don't think the famous people who met me were really bothered and it was mutual.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@PhilDeep sometimes they just try to have normal interactions where they can

Soph03 · 18-21, F
@mayguy highland games in Georgia. He turned up with his bodyguards but they waited in the distance while he went around and talked to people. I only spoke to him briefly and I needed one of the american dancers to tell me who he was

@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP or me playing road hockey with a signed tony tanti hockey stick and breaking it. i know tanti will never be in the hall of fame or anything but he did score 40 goals one year on a shitty canucks team

Probably Al Pacino.
Ed Asner, Moses Malone, Alan Iverson, Regina King, Chris Webber, Paris Hilton, Nikki Hilton, Mike Tyson, and many others, I used to work security at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@NativePortlander1970 Who was the nicest and who was most rude?
@Soph03 I'd tie Ed Asner and Mike Tyson as the nicest, hands down Cris Webber was as rude as fuck, he missed his own charity golf tournament because he was up all night getting stoned and partying with others in his VIP suite.

@Patriot96 Jimmy was nice, I don't like the king
@Patriot96 Oh and BTW, Carter was the Trump of his day, the establishment dems resisted all of his policies, he actually tried rescuing the hostages, but a sudden sandstorm fucked that up. What did Reagan do? He gave the Iranians weapons funded from Contra cocaine.
