Breastfeeding after one year?

How many moms out there continued to breastfeed after a year? My twins were born almost a year ago. I never intended to breastfeed for so long but for for a couple of reasons I'm thinking I would like to continue. I've had problems with traditional breastfeeding and have been doing mostly bottle feeding. But as my twins get bigger, I think I will be more successful with regular breastfeeding. I would eventually like that bond. So I'm thinking of continuing. Any pros or cons to this?

YES!

Extended breastfeeding is extremely beneficial for as long as mother and child are desirous of it.

@laurieluvsit Just a designed :-)

Still going strong at 18 months. I never thought I would do it, but it's been worthwhile, and very healthy for the kids.
daisy77 · 61-69, F
I breastfed both of my kids. They're 2 years apart, and when my youngest was born I was still feeding the oldest so he continued until he was 4 and my youngest was 2. Looking back, I wish I had breastfed both of them until at least kindergarten, but extended breastfeeding was kinda frowned upon back then and I didn't know better
HeatherFlorida · 36-40, F
@daisy77 Thanks for sharing that. My twins are 2 now, and I was weaning them but have had second thoughts about it.
HeatherFlorida · 36-40, F
And still going after 22 months! But I fear I will have to stop soon because of my weight loss. I still don't know if it's related to lactation, but it might be.
HeatherFlorida · 36-40, F
@samueltyler2 Haha. Maybe. Or it could be as simple as I'm just producing too much milk for my body to keep up. Or it could be something completely different. I'm glad to lose the weight in certain places but it's become too much now. Unless I'm trying to set the world record for smallest waist. LOL .. Joking aside, it's kind of disturbing.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@HeatherFlorida do you have images before and after. Generally i would expect that with the milk fed to the baby, you would get hungry and be able to eat anything yo like and not gain weight, but to actually lose is unusual.

@HeatherFlorida
I still don't know if it's related to lactation, but it might be.

You don't know? Of course, it is related to lactation. The kid is latching onto you for nutrition like a mass of leeches sucking blood from your skin. You are a mom, for Christ's sake. You ought to know by divine guidance when to wean your offspring. What's wrong with you?

the only con I can think of is judgement from others.

I remember I had the peanut gallery with my first. People didn’t like I was breastfeeding my son at 18 months
@sree251 Dick.

@SW-User Don't let your time breastfeeding be shortened because others frown on it.

@Lyn4Zoo I didn’t listen to the haters and breast fed him until 2

Some increased risk of dental decay from delayed weaning.
@samueltyler2 people don't nurse a three year old to sleep - they're getting a drink and moving away. People with no more emotion to give a baby will use a bottle for that - they're also known to shut the kid in a bedroom and let them scream until they stop. It's not necessary, just customary!
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Roundandroundwego I am speaking from my experience as a former pediatrician. Sometimes I heard and saw a child say.to its mother I want to nurse.
@samueltyler2 my kid just said ",titty". She was four when she stopped nursing. My friends and I strongly believe in letting them decide when to nurse or drink titty, and when to stop. Around age four or five, they stopped. We didn't limit their food after that, we took full responsibility for offering them foods we believed in, and not buying stuff in crinkly wrapping, ever. We believe in food, too. My daughter weened to strawberry Hagen daas, back when it was really good, then she seemed to need egg custard, then she was done.

Are there rules about this or just make them up as you go
Richard65 · M
Forgive me butting in as a male, but the medical advice is that you can breast feed for up to two years, or even longer. It's important to introduce other foods after six months, but to continue breast feeding alongside the other foods is great. There is a bonding benefit to breast feeding, as well as providing antibodies, so if that's your desire, Heather, then go for it. It's all good 😊
Richard65 · M
@AllycatAD I think that's great, breast is definitely best! 😊
The bonding aspect is invaluable too. Though my friend found she was unable to breast feed, and always regretted that, even though it wasn't her fault.
Do you mean you bottle fed with breast milk or formula?
@Richard65 breast milk
Richard65 · M
@AllycatAD I was bottle fed, so I never had the pleasure. I've never tasted it. Thanks for replying.

After looking at your posts, this doesn't sound like a serious question but a question to feed a fetish.

Wow, you are not pulling punches. I hope this won't upset the OP. I am not criticizing you for being blunt but you are putting your finger on the right spot.

My wife breast fed each of our three for a couple of years. The children naturally became less and less interested in it as time went on so weaning was a simple process for both parties with very little stress. They were breast fed on demand not according to any kind of schedule.

I can't think of any cons. The obvious pros are not having all that bottle washing, preparation of formula, getting the right temperature, having to cut short a trip out to get home for a feed, and not having to put up with a hungry child.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon
I can't think of any cons.

Kids need to grow physically and emotionally. They ought to be weaned in a timely manner.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@sree251 If by timely you mean at the right time, then yes of course. If you mean according to some kind of one size fits all livestock breeding program then no.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon
If by timely you mean at the right time, then yes of course.

The right time is not according to your pediatrician unless she is a good wholesome mom herself. The right time is determined by maternal instinct of a wholesome mother.

You’ll have to stop when they go to school, but till then it’s up to you!!!

As far as my twins go, it was after a year and a half I started weening them. I hope you're doing well
HeatherFlorida · 36-40, F
@AllycatAD Thank you!
Panamared · 70-79, M
That would be between you and the twins
sree251 · 41-45, M
@Panamared The twins are hardly a year old. You expect mom to have a discussion with them?
oldercanuck1 · 70-79, M
Breast feed as long as you enjoy and the babies continue to not hurt you ,, you only give them the /best of food and yes the bonding is there fore sure ,, my wife breast feed till they started biting and went straight to a drinking glass they are still very close to their mom ,,
UndeadSona · F
If they're already on the bottle why go backwards am I missing something?
HeatherFlorida · 36-40, F
@UndeadSona I'm pumping. It's my milk. And I've tried to breastfeed but it's difficult because of my size. As they get bigger, it might become easier. So I'd like to continue and give it another try.
Four years. That's normal.
Marco78 · 46-50, M
I always have been told breastfeeding till babies are two years old is the best for them, mother's milk is the best complement for their healt, and makes the mom-son stronger. The way you do It don't mind, just the one you and them feel more confortable. If the problem IS the size of your breast, think that the older they became their mouths and jaws Will be bigger and It Will be less difficult for them
sree251 · 41-45, M
You are not making sense, lady. If you have been doing mostly bottle feeding because you had problems, why would you bother with breast-feeding now that your twins are well on the way to eating food like regular people?
HeatherFlorida · 36-40, F
@sree251 I've been mostly pumping and bottle feeding. Not formula.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@HeatherFlorida My comment still stands. The twins are old enough to be weaned off breast milk. Continuing breastfeeding is for you, not for them. You ought to be encouraging them to take solid food that they need now for growth.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I breastfed all my kids and I start weaning before 2 year's old. The younger u start to wean the easier it is
Penny · 46-50, F
once they go to the bottle theres not much chance of going back so im thinking troll lol
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
The longer you breast feed the more intelligent you children will be. Your milk has all kinds of brain food their growing brains need.

I'd switch over to a breast pump as they get older.
