A young child, perhaps an only child, needs to learn safe social skills. This kid, in some sense, got away with a variety of things. I doubt that these behaviors are useful to her or genuinely help her play with other kids. She needs to practice doing what she is told and doing things around other kids that will not enrage them. She is lucky no one challenged her. That might have caused a very different ending.

I suspect that the home situation is much more complicated than it appears. Parents probably have other issues than how to teach her to play well with other kids. If she has the balance and skill to stand at the top of a slide, she may have been way too old for the slide. Some aspects of her behavior seem really messed up yet almost requiring gymnastics training..

Jumping barefoot from picnic table to picnic table is not easy and neither is standing up at the top of a slide. In all probability she was way too old for the event. Teaching cooperation and the ability to do things that are boring are never easy. Spanking for obvious disobedience is just the beginning. "Nope!" is not a good response ever to parental orders. This young woman needs to learn many skills but she is also talented. Having balance and no fear of heights suggest serious potential! I hope her parents do better by her.

If the parents don't, her peers or the authorities will!

Too many " Nope" and " Don't tell me what to do" were shrugged off and allowed until the kid grew horns and figured out she's the one who calls the shots. Unfortunately, we've often seen that bullies and criminals have that same pattern of behavior at a young age. Imagine how many crimes and broken lives can be avoided by good parenting and seeking professional help for mentally/emotionally unstable children.

Oh that would have gotten a warning first after that she be taken to the car and spanked properly for her attitude at the park.

If I tried that with my mom I would have gotten spanked

My kids know what would happen when they got home if they did that so as a result they don't act that way. It's really not complicated.

Guess Im more traditional, had I kids God forbid, and they acted up I pull them aside and give them one warning to straighten up. If they acted up they get a swat on the behind, just enough to scare them and sting a little bit. Of course swatting isn't the only way to punish a child. Each kid is different, you gotta do something they truly hate, thats enough of an incentive to prevent them from doing it again. Sometimes just a verbal threat from my mom was enough to get me to act right. Like putting soap in my mouth, god that was nasty and hated it more than spankings.

That little bratty girl needs some old school attitude adjustment. In a old fashioned household, her hide wouldn't be sitting down for at least a week. Somewhere down the road, kids stopped showing respect to parents and others around them.

@ RachelC I have 8-year-old twin daughters and a 7-year-old daughter my 17-year-old daughter took them to the park and 2 boys wouldn't get off the swings cause my girls wanted to swing my 17-year-old told them you need to let other kids use the swings they told my 17-year-old to mid her own business I told the boys you2 were disrespectful to my daughter

The general consensus here is clearly that in this situation, there should have been pushback from somewhere. I have seen wrestling at the top of a slide. I understand that posters here all feel that somehow this is a case where spanking would help. I am not so sure.

Another often cited hypothetical in support of spanking is street crossing behavior. Again I have my doubts. Obviously safe crossings are mission critical and nothing is more important. I agree but things are never simple. The goal is rarely to avoid ALL street crossings but rather to avoid all unassisted crossings. So, immediately the plot thickens. My sense is that almost always there are educationally better ways to teach and to develop the relevant skills.

Should spanking alternatives have been used in the case inspiring this thread? If possible, yes. But if patience, time, etc. were not present in abundance, then a simple spanking or spanking might have been appropriate.

What I don't really agree with is the view that this situation called for a hard or high intensity spanking. These should be rare and not used in haste. Several of the comments refer to the recommended spanking occurring at home or off-site from the slide. That would be essential. Is this situation one where all the features of a hard spanking are appropriate? Feeling it afterwards, having a "torn up" bottom, getting it with the belt or getting a hand spanking that was as firm as a belt spanking, ... This seemed bratty but kind of normal and not worthy of lifelong memorability.
