Hostess at a local restaurant in my hometown.

OldBrit · 61-69, M
First paying job was at 15 I played guitar at a school production of Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat. I got £20.
No it’s gone now, my dad actually owned it years before I worked there.

My first job was me working for me... I started shining shoes outside a bar the farmers in the area frequented when I was about 13. And no, after mom found out what I was doing (instead of being at a friends house) my business closed.

Best, if short lived summer job ever. FUI (farmers under the influence) who didn't need their boots shined gave me up to $1 for a quick shine. Mom, however,

Worked in a high street bank. Yes still going.
AngelaR80 · 46-50, F
@gandalf1957 that's possibly my career route if I don't get made redundant
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@AngelaR80 i hadn't realised that you were still with the bank! I know two that left high street banks because they didn't want to be sales people. I have moved home quite a lot in the last 20 years and the high street bank that I bank with seems to close the nearest branch just after I have moved - so annoying!!
AngelaR80 · 46-50, F
@gandalf1957 I've been with same company apart from a long break when I first had kids. I've changed brand but still with same company.
Sazzio · 36-40, M
CNC operator and no. I only got in as my dad's friend sort of knew the boss of the factory.

Walking the service dog of the MOD policeman who lived next to us on a British military base. The base still operates.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
Letterbox junk mail deliveries in the early 1980s. Business still exists I think but junk mail deliveries tend to be more electronic or via the postal system these days. Money and conditions were shite but back then there wasn't a Macca's or kfc on every second street corner to work as an underpaid slave at. And 1980's wages for juniors was very low.

I worked as a clerk in a pharmacy. It's gone now - it closed many years ago.
PatKirby · M
@LadyBronte

I was an asst. mgr. at Walgreens in two cities. Close to the worst job i ever had. Grumpy customers always complaining, shoplifters, angry people honking in both drive through lanes, petty infighting among the staff, the list never ended. Hope your experience was good. I can't imagine working there again.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@PatKirby It wasn't bad. I was a clerk so people were happy to see me, pay, and get out of the store. It was the actual pharmacist and assistant that recieved most of the negative. Lol. Sorry it was bad for you!
scorpiolovedeep · 51-55, M
My first job was a graduate engineer, that business has been taken over by another major contractor.

Delivering prescriptions for a local pharmacy when I was about 14. Business closed down many years ago.
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@ArtieKat shocking that they gave the drugs to a 14 year old. It wouldn't happen today.
ArtieKat · M
@PatientlyWaiting25 The pharmacist was a friend of the family; my late father was a doctor

Levenrack · 46-50, M
Milwaukee County Park Worker. Mowing grass, baseball diamond preparation, and kiddie pool upkeep/testing.

It didn't pay great, but definitely the most satisfying job I've ever had.

THANKS

Grocery bagger, the store is still there
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Unloading Fishing Trawlers off of the Thevy Wharf for McEvoy Transport when I was 14. I don't know if they're still operating. I quit when a shark we were hoisting out of the hold accidentally knocked me off the wharf onto the boat.
Gusman · 61-69, M
I worked at a corner store as a general dog's body whilst awaiting to begin an apprenticeship as a Fitter and Turner.
Polishing cucumbers was included in my duties.
My Lyell Copper Mine has been closed since three miners died in the space of 39 days in 2013.
There is talk of the imminent reopening sometime this year.

Newspaper Boy: that paper is no longer publishing.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@bowman81 The slow death of newspapers is the one that saddens me when I hear about it

PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
I had small jobs whilst training, I worked as a frame stylist in an opticians. I basically cleaned all the glasses, answered the phone and booked in customers. I hated it. It was so boring. It still exists. My first proper job was a hairdresser. That salon has closed down now as the owner has retired.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
Actually, I started giving out pamphlets on my rollerskates when I was 13. I would get 50 bucks for 1000 pamphlets. It was pretty good
