I couldn't with my dog, I was just too emotionally broken, a week before my husband passed away very suddenly so I'd just finished doing end of life care with him then my dog then had to be put down for aggression. 😔

@PatientlyWaiting25 I am very sorry for your loss, I hope this did not upset you

I heard an interview with a vet about when the owners leave because it’s too painful to be there and the pets face is devastated become they feel abandoned by the one they love the most. It is so very tough to be in the room but the pet knows exactly what’s happening and they need you.

I did with my cat.
They let me hold her, she wasn't fully herself, not fully there anymore.
It was a bitter sweet feeling once she passed.
A combination of relief, sadness she was gone and the weight of worry/concern for another living thing melting away.
It helped, a lot.

I think it's the right thing to do although I am sure I ended up with a form of PTSD after witnessing my dog pass. You're there to comfort your pet in their final hour
eyeno · M
Yes, I've done it for my cat named Shadow, an 18 lb. Ragdoll.
I struggled and managed to hold back the tears as I gave him a final kiss.
We both looked into each others eyes as he went under.

Part of being a pet owner is the responsibility if being there at the end. They live their life with you, loving you. In the final hour when their bodies are failing you need to be there for them. Giving comfort and love a d tears. Telling them how much you loved having them in your life, how much you enjoyed their company. And to help them feel at ease in the final moments.
It sucks absolutely but if your not there when they close their eyes fir the last time and they are scared because you're not there.... I could never live with that thought.

@biandlargeny This happened to me back in 2008. I was asked if I could stay out OTR for another werk with the trainer and that's when my dog had to be put down from old age. I think about it all the time and get teary eyed because I wasn't there for her in her last moments.

always... I won't leave them when they need me most! they give us countless good days and only one really bad one. I've never regretted taking that deal!
AdmiralPrune · 41-45, M
I did. I was supposed to be there to comfort them but seeing the animal I’d cared for since its birth be put down, I could help but feel I failed her. An irrational thought considering how long she lived for and how happy she clearly was.
She has not been replaced.

Yep. We did with my dog. Vets say that is when pets look really sad and starting looking around for their family.
exexec · 70-79, C
I did not stay for the first one, and I regretted it. I have held the others in my arms as they were put down, loving on them until the end. That was the best way for me.
Julien · 36-40, M
Yes or course . My pet would deserve being hugged and pet and being reassured while that happens !
shinyplasticlove · 51-55, M
My dog lives it's whole life being there for me so for something like that I will be there for them with a couple squares of chocolate.

Yes, and it was horrible, my poor trusting baby was so sick, I just held her, and then she went limp. That broke my heart.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
Did that with my dog years ago was old and was taking him home to bury him afterwards!
AbbeyRhode · F
Yes. I couldn't let her go alone and scared. I held her and comforted her until the end.
