What's the place where you grew up like nowadays?

The place where I grew up in Northern Illinois is a sadly a crime ridden dump, now. Prior to the mid-2000s, most of the crime in the town was confined to the low income subdivisions on the southeast side. But in the mid 2000's it really started to deteriorate, and by the time we moved in 2011, crime had spread to other areas including the subdivision where I lived.

The town I grew up in is pretty much the same, but the house I grew up in has been renovated to the point that it’s unrecognizable from where I used to live
It was a rural farming community. Dairy farms were a common site. The farms are all gone, replaced by wall to wall housing developments and condos. Most of the things that were individualistic about the town have been torn down and replaced by the usual mega stores: Wal Mart, Home Depot, etc.
I look at the places we used to play as kids, hang out as teenagers, where I parked my first car on a deserted farm driveway with that special girl from school, and I try to picture them the way they used to be. But it gets harder to see.

I grew up partly on the west side of Columbus, Ohio and as it became rougher my parents moved in the early 1970's to a country subdivision. The West side went from blue color to ghetto as Columbus grew and pushed the Ghetto folk into the west side. The country area my parents moved us to with a one school system became a thriving set of suburbs on the East side of Columbus now with a three high school system and still bombing. I moved when I was 19 and never went back.

Many local industries have shut down, or became new businesses.

My home was very rural, it still is but there are more houses now. Everyone used to be so nice to each as strangers but it did get a bit gossipy sometimes if you frequented town. The 2008 recession, election of a black president, and subsequent election of Donald Trump really brought out the bitterness in people. Trust in neighbors has dropped significantly. The political divide has everyone always on edge. And fearmongering about crime and low income housing has just brought socialization in the area to a halt.

It's really sad to visit home now and see all of this. Ten years ago i took my gf up there and she remarked about how friendly everyone was. We went up last year and she remarked about how bitter and angry everyone seemed to be.
Ironically, my earliest memories were neighbors who were from the South and had the same ways as my parents, and everybody watched out for each other’s children. Then we moved to the suburbs. The old neighborhood is "gentrified" now.
I live in my childhood home. The area is a mix of hipsters and new money and gangland. Pretty much like most innercity areas.

Idk. It wasn't much to get excited about back then. I dont think much has changed.

There was a murder there a couple of years ago. Thats the last time I remember even thinking about that place.

Super expensive. The average home costs 1.2 million dollars. Still just as shitty
