Do you hate organisations harassing you for money in front of supermarkets or public areas?

whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
A polite, "sorry, not interested" without breaking stride works wonders...Particularly if they just want "A moment of your time."😷
@whowasthatmaskedman yes I am usually diplomatic....and 'firm' lol
Ducky · 31-35, F
I wouldn't call it harassing, lol. Most of them seem pretty decent about it, but it does make me uncomfortable and makes me feel like a quackhole if it's for like a charity or whatever.
Ducky · 31-35, F
@Fishy That’s really sad. 😞 They should let up on that and understand someone is probably worse off themselves. 🫂
Fishy · 36-40, F
@Ducky yeah, this happened a while ago lol,
I'm okay now tho.

But another time, not long after that, the same guy was there and I deliberately avoided eye contact even though he was basically waving at me,

I ignored him because I knew he didn't take no for an answer very well,

And he got snippy, threw his arms up in the air and everything 😂
Ducky · 31-35, F
@Fishy Those people have the wrong frickin’ job. How you gonna convince people to donate to your cause when you’re out acting like a jackass?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
So many charities these days hire professional fund raisers to spruik for them..The charities are lucky to see a portion of the money. (Coincidentally, thats how Trump gathers his donations. Up to 90% goes to Trump organisations in "administration"..)😷
@whowasthatmaskedman yes this is what I've heard... and they act like obnoxious salespeople too!!
Fishy · 36-40, F
If they're just standing there with their own stall and waiting for customers to approach, that isn't too bad.

It's the ones that try to force eye contact like they're some sort of crackhead that bothers me 😂

It's like dude, if I was interested, I would come up to you
@Fishy yes I agree but it seems most are taught to directly approach people!
Fishy · 36-40, F
@metaldog I never understood why they're taught that,
I know that I'm more likely to show interest in whatever someone is trying to sell if I go on my own terms
Fishy · 36-40, F
@metaldog I know a few shop owners who hate them too,
They claim that they scare off customers
Big Issue sellers are the worst... I know that they are trying to help the homeless - but I would rather drop a few coins into the hat of a beggar simply because I know what it's like to be out for 12+ hours a day in the colder months and not all rough sleepers are able to get in out of the cold at night.
@HootyTheNightOwl yep that's how I feel, give directly!!
@metaldog I didn't resort to begging on the streets... but, if I had been out there much longer than I was, I probably would have done.

By the time I got to the hotel, the first two things I did was to put the kettle on and run a hot bath. Some nights, I literally crawled out of that bath like a slug because I was frozen to the bone and hadn't had anything hot to eat all day.

How did I end up homeless??? No... I'm not a alcoholic or an addict - my crime was to get raped by someone who wouldn't stop.

They rehomed me in a hotel in his hometown because I couldn't stay in my own home anymore.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Everyone today thinks they are a hustler. Buy this, give money, support my stup*d patreon, gibs gibs gibs!

But yeah for real -
I mean crap, like sometimes annoying panhandlers sit there in a wheel chair like they azzes is crippled. THEY ISN'T CRIPPLED. Some of them carry signs saying some 6 month old needs life saving surgery. WHY THEY LIEIN'?

Or like go to the grocery and here is some AT&T pest asking who you go with for cell service. Just say "BICH I live off the grid in an Amish community".
I am already annoyed by having to go to the grocery store, I ain't wantin to talk to some hoebag about my cell service.

OH and those TV charities, there is one about some holocaust survivor BS. Some 90 year old Jewish woman who lives in a shack or something. Y'all seen that one? How that old tw4t make it to age 90 in those condition?

I just I can't even.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Very aggravating.
I'd say 70% of TV ads are long established charities begging for for donations or worse. This trend of asking strangers to leave something in their wills to them
Elisbch · M
I think I'd have to agree with you on this. There is a local tv/radio (public) station here doing just that.
Asking people to consider willing them their money when deceased. Disgustingly depraved behavior and advertising in my opinion and would never consider it. @Picklebobble2
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Picklebobble2 @Elisbch Jesus f*ckin GD christ! NOW orgs are asking to be part of someone's Will? They do not stop at f*ckin nothing do they? FUuUuUuUuck that,
Nah, i enjoy saying no
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
You mean those business people who stop you and talk to you about some kind of product they are selling?

Absolutely. Like, leave me alone and stop wasting my time.
@SubstantialKick exactly, I think it's audacious to call out and approach people...I pretty much tell em to fk off
Fairydust · F
Yeah I like to choose who I send money to. Plus the card machine now asking for money 😳
Fairydust · F
@metaldog
I bet, things aren’t always what they appear.
@Fairydust exactly!!
Fairydust · F
@metaldog

It wouldn’t surprise me, if some charities, pretending to do good are up to no good.
Especially abroad involving young children. You know what I mean.
Elisbch · M
I don't pay them any attention. Most organizations that get permission to be on supermarket properties have an agreement with the supermarket that they do not "harass" the patrons if they want to stay. For example Salvation Army. Never seen this done on public areas. What many consider or think is public ground (at least here anyway) is not really public. It's either owned by the city or the state (which would require a licenses) or other surrounding businesses or homeowners. ( possibly also requiring licenses).
@Elisbch pavements of busy streets are public ground, and they set up there and approach people
Elisbch · M
@metaldog ...

Now I guess that depends on where you live.
If you live where I do, that is not permitted. Panhandling is not permitted.
Here... requires all business “engaged with activities associated with a tax or fee" to acquire a seller's permit, also called a "sales tax license." The application for a seller's permit specifically lists many of the types of activities that require registration with the state.
Peddlers do not permanently occupy a space like a traditional business, peddlers are still subject to the same laws as other businesses here. Therefore, peddlers here are also required to obtain business tax receipt. And, the tax receipt must be visible in the peddler's cart or display. Here, acquiring these licenses touchdown on the Riff Raff organizations or people that you claim harass people at supermarkets and public places.

Basically the bottom line is if they have licenses and they start harassing the public and they're reported, their licensing may not ever be renewed and they may be shut down. I've seen it happen.

Furthermore I do not engage with people that are harassing others on sidewalks otherwise known as riff raff. I let the riff raff engage with them. 🤷
I have better things to do and spend my energy on that is more constructive and not left up to animal instincts.

* Diffferent states have different laws for those of you that like to simplify things so much just to make yourself right.
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
Solicitation in the UK is illegal. Nobody should be approaching you and asking for money no matter what the reason.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Jacko1971 JFC I wish it were illegal in the USA.
thedreamer1975 · 46-50, F
Believe it or not they do have to have permission from the shop managers before they do that.
bookerdana · M
🤔 Well at least I get to tell em To go to @!^%bv+ double quick
@bookerdana I knew I liked you 😁
bookerdana · M
@metaldog Everyone DO🤣🤣
Hate? No
Dislike? Sometimes
I’m glad they are able to be there. Just don’t give a damn about most of them.
Yes the boy scouts/girl guides are getting aggressive if you don't buy a box of cookies.
I’m not a fan of being harassed. Period.
@BiasForAction same here

Somebody selling something annoys me, but I just side step them and keep on going. Bonafide charities are different. I usually give them $5 or more.
@Ontheroad I just don't trust anyone anymore
thedreamer1975 · 46-50, F
I usually just say im already a member or i already support the charity in other ways.
@thedreamer1975 Hahaha, my mother used to say that with the RAC salesmen. A few would have her show them her card over the years, too.

She was always happy to produce her card that was dated for at least 10 years prior to them asking.
It all depends if the fruit I bought was a bit rotten. 😉

Renaci · 36-40
We don't get salemen that do that, but we do have preachers standing out in front of stores telling people they are going to hell.
@Renaci haha, I tell these guys to go to hell lol
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Renaci If they wont get out of the way, tell them your mother in law has given you the local franchise already..😷
@V00doo Do you ignore them completely or exchange words?
@metaldog Ignore or tell them Im not interested. There's a few I give to already, so if it's them I tell them.
