If you had $100 budget to spend on groceries...

What would your grocery list look like, and how long do you predict your groceries will last? What would be a realistic budget for yourself if you had to go over it?

Bigger question

When am I gonna get my next 100 dollars?
@CountScrofula exactly! 💯

What's the time period
Coralmist · 41-45, F
I typically get two packs of meat like chicken and hamburger. That can make a couple meals..like pasta with meat sauce and chicken stir fry. I'd buy bananas, bread, milk and iced tea. Yogurt, cheese, a pound of deli ham and turkey. A couple bags frozen veggies, maybe two frozen entrees. And last perhaps a box of cereal or granola bars. This is my typical list and adds up to roughly 80 bucks or so. It lasts a little over a week or so.

@Coralmist I buy a lot of the same things, but I do buy fresh fruit

About $50 per person per week per 2000 calorie need should be an attainable frugal shopping list. The USDA publishes menus and does shopping tests to determine the cost and those figures are used as a basis for SNAP payments. I haven’t peeked in a few years but imagine that there menus would price out at about $60 per week.

One problem with shopping lists and set menus is that they are based on predetermined choices and don’t adjust for the ups and downs of the market place. So 10 to 20% below USDA should be easy. Also thrifty shopping can flush out dramatic price differences.

For that $100, the shopping cart should look like the FDA’s My Plate or the old Pyramid or some other recognized benchmark.

Depends what a person wants. $100 is like 2 bags of items esp if meat is included

If you go to the shop before closing you get lots of good food reduced. Plus I growfruit t and vegetables and herbs and freeze lots. I could live on £100 for a fortnight if I had to. But including alcohol, for the two of us it's probably about £100 a week.

I'd buy the staples, rice, flour, potatoes, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder, eggs and cheap meat that I could stretch using my other ingredients. I'd also try to buy pasta.
Soup, bread, peanut butter, nuts, Mac and cheese, beef, spaghetti sauce, eggs, cheese, etc……. I’ll make the best of that 100

A decent sized steak is $50. A $100 doesn’t go far these days.

Under biden about 3 items in the cart.
Just me it'd last a couple weeks probably. Probably 3-4 protein items, similar amount of fresh veggies and then some snacks
$100 per what time frame?

$100 per hour?
$100 per day?
$100 per week?
$100 per month?
Etc

I guess that depends on how long I have to make it last. $100 for the whole month? Rice, some dried beans, some seasonings, and some multivitamins. I'll be miserable, but I'll live.

A week? Drop the multivitamins and I'll pick up a pork loin, a block of cheese, some assorted canned veggies, and whatever fruit I can afford with what very little should be left. Still not happy, but getting better. And if I plan it right, I'll have leftovers to carry into the next week allowing me to slowly diversify over time.

My normal budget would probably be closer to about $25/day. But I could do less if I had to.
