About $50 per person per week per 2000 calorie need should be an attainable frugal shopping list. The USDA publishes menus and does shopping tests to determine the cost and those figures are used as a basis for SNAP payments. I haven’t peeked in a few years but imagine that there menus would price out at about $60 per week.
One problem with shopping lists and set menus is that they are based on predetermined choices and don’t adjust for the ups and downs of the market place. So 10 to 20% below USDA should be easy. Also thrifty shopping can flush out dramatic price differences.
For that $100, the shopping cart should look like the FDA’s My Plate or the old Pyramid or some other recognized benchmark.
