Who likes Sardines?

I just discovered that I like sardines and they are good for you and have a lot of health benefits.
meggie · F
No they are too fishy for me. I only eat tuna in brine or spring water from a can.
SW-User
I don't like the texture. I prefer kippered herring
Fertilization · 36-40, F
Love sardines 😋
i did when i was a kid...but for some reason i don't like them anymore...don't ask me why 🤷🏻
4meAndyou · F
Not only that, but they come boneless, skinless, and packed in water. Unlike tuna and almost any predatory fish, sardines have NO mercury, because they don't eat other fish.

Some people don't like the very fishy taste, but if you mash the sardines, and soak them in water mixed heavily with lemon juice, the sardines taste almost exactly like canned tuna.

@4meAndyou yeah primary get the skinless and boneless ones and some herring fillets:

Sardines were a regular part of the lunches that my father packed for our fishing trips. We preferred those packed in mustard. My mother would not allow us to open a can of sardines in the house because she hated the smell. My father and I enjoyed them by the lake, along with a few saltine crackers.
BBryant · 56-60, M
@exexec cool yeah I think it is a staple for fishing trips. My wife doesn’t like the smell either so I have to throw the empty can in the outside trash can. Lol

Never had them. I've only stuck to tuna or salmon

@SW-User should've picked a different species to identify as
BBryant · 56-60, M
@deadgerbil well I just left it open because I felt everyone would have their favorite.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I like them. I make cream cheese and sardine sandwiches.
4meAndyou · F
@DrWatson Oooo. Add some chives or some chopped green onion, and that would be heaven!!! Especially open faced, on pumpernickel!
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
i like sardines on toast, with black pepper springled on.
ArtieKat · M
I love sardines and pilchards - particularly on toast!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Want to try something better? Try the canned red herring in water if you can find it.

The canola oil in sardines really isn't that good for many.
BBryant · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer yeah get herring every now and as a matter of fact I had some today that had peppers. They were pretty good.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@BBryant you probably won't believe this. By mistake I once bought the red herring in hot sauce.

While I was eating and regretting my mistake my cat came on my lap and was sniffing it.

Normally she never eats anything of mine except canned tuna in water. Never with oil.

Yet to my surprise she started licking the hot sauce. I gave her a little bit more on a separate plate with a little bit of the herring.

She left the herring yet licked up all the hot sauce! 🙀🤣
BBryant · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer lol I have given my dogs a little nipple of mine before and they like them. They go nuts when they hear the can open. But I give them Vienna too so I think they associate the sound of the can.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I prefer smoked kippers to sardines. Fresh sardines are very good if they are prepared right with a spicy chermoula filling before being cooked in olive oil.
Once every 2 weeks, I eat them. I have to be in the mood. The ones in oil are the only ones I like. So healthy.
Northwest · M
I buy sardines canned in olive oil. I get them at Costco.
Wizardry · 46-50, M
Use to like them. But lost interest in them
sree251 · 41-45, M
sardines make great open sandwiches.
Gusman · 61-69, M
I love tinned sardines on toast with grated cheese
Jexie · 26-30, F
I love sardines. Delicious when on toast.
@Jexie Pan fried first? That's how I loved them as a kid.
Jexie · 26-30, F
@NativePortlander1970 No not at all. That would make it unhealthy.
@Jexie As a serious home gourmet, learning how to cook at the age of five in 1975 from my Dad, who was a serious home gourmet himself, who learned from his Dad at the ate of five in 1950. You're mistaking simple pan frying with microwaving, which that is the abomination of "cooking", microwaves should be outlawed.
Umile · 41-45, F
Doesn't it have too much salt?
@Umile You can get them low sodium
Umile · 41-45, F
@NativePortlander1970 I don't risk it. MSG and Sugar are my enemies right now. Smh. Two of my favorite things.
@Umile That's why I look at labels very close.
Azlotto · M
I sure so.
LordShadowfire · 100+, M
I loves me some sardines. Vegetable oil only, though. Putting them in water ruins it for me.
I haven't had sardines in decades, I loved to pan fry them and eat them on toast, grossing my mother and both of my older brothers out 😁
@cherokeepatti Parsley is good
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 Imagine being able to buy a kilo of sardines for that little money, having them cleaned for you and then eating them to your heart’s content.
@cherokeepatti I'd be on cloud nine
