Ethnicity, race…and music

I recently found this photo online. If you know jazz, you probably know who they are, and I think it’s from when they toured together.
But one thing I thought of: in the U.S., this is a picture of a white man and a black man. If you don’t know the individuals, would you be able to tell who was who ?
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Django and Duke.

However remember that Django's relatives were treated as second class humans by the Nazis. For them Django wasn't pure white.
@samueltyler2 The creator of the Green Book got the idea from similar guides that existed for Jewish travelers.
@bijouxbroussard Did you see the movie, Bijoux? If you did, do you think it was fair enough or "white people-oriented"? (I haven't seen it yet).
@EarthlingWise I haven’t seen it yet, either. But I’ve seen copies of the genuine article, my father had them.
I would only guess. The one showing his teeth looks more Hispanic than African American. I did notice that in old photos of your family that you once posted when I first gotten to know you. I think you also posted pics of baby you 👶
@tindrummer Yes, I felt a bit paranoid awhile back.
tindrummer · M
@bijouxbroussard Better safe than sorry on social media - eh? 😎
@tindrummer Indeed. I forget what prompted it…I think someone complained that her photos had been copied and reposted. I really only provided access of that album to friends (like you, Piecing and a few others) but all of a sudden the site felt unsafe.
Some people view race as two boxes. And some see race as a spectrum. You could take a person and in some areas the person would be considered white and in other areas the same person would be considered black.
@YourMomsSecretCrush That’s amazing. You have some Native ancestry ?
Reads out about 1 percent. It varies depending on site. African varies between ten percent and one percent and my guess somewhere in the middle. His last name is Goss and that has some Jewish roots. My dads mom has some native roots and some melungeon roots. @bijouxbroussard

I am delighted to read this! Years ago, travelling through France, we ended up on a little campsite just outside the city of Fontainebleau. It was a rural village called Samoreau on the banks of the river Seine. It seems that Django is burried in that area, and every year there is a big Django Rheinhard festival in Fontainebleau. All the gipsies with their trailercaravans gather on that little campsite, and actually a complete subfestival devellopped over the years on that campsite, lots of musicians and other people attend that campsite on these festivities. Days of music, dance and grillings. If you search on Youtube for camping Samoreau, you can find lots of uploaded vids of this event.

Ive idolized Duke since i was a child. Always wanted to play piano like him. After years of playing and experience, i have an even deeper understanding of what made/makes him so good... and how far away i am from being as good as he is.
Im also biased, tho. Jazz is special to me. Especially the classics. Grew up with it and have been playing jazz many years of my life. If any of you dont know who these two are... it would do you a great deal to learn.
:) cheers
@astrosandorbits I grew up with the music of both Duke and Django. I’m a classical pianist, but there are jazz musicians in my family.
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard how wonderful :)
The one looked familiar then I saw "Old Brit" mention Duke and I remembered Duke Ellington, I had to study the photo a bit, I think it's the Duke on the right. I guess in many way's, being very light skinned was a kind of blessing, but I've heard even the gorgeous Lena Horne still had to deal with racism. Sad when being able to "pass" was considered an asset.
@Grateful4you Yes. It’s a weird concept, based on the "one drop rule" unique only to the U.S. (and possibly Apartheid-era South Africa).

Sammy Davis Jr. used to tell a joke: "My mother was born in San Juan. So I'm Puerto Rican, Jewish, colored and married to a white woman. When I move into a neighborhood, people start running four ways at the same time."

His mom was born in New York City of Afro-Cuban descent, actually. But why ruin a joke?
@SW-User Exactly right. And one reason he’d refer to her as Puerto Rican rather than Cuban was because of biases against Cubans, even back then.

@bijouxbroussard The tightropes he had to walk...
What couldn't he do in Show Biz?
Scribbles · 36-40, F
An iconic photo of Duke and Django.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Scribbles Here's Django and the Duke in 1939, prior to Django's failed US tour:
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I know they're musicians and I THINK the one is Duke Ellington, but not 100% sure. I have this fear it'll turn out to be Count Basie and I'll be embarrassed by my ignorance. Next time post Cab Calloway, him I know. ;)
@ChipmunkErnie You’re right, it is Duke Ellington. The man on the left is Django Reinhardt, Romani-French guitarist.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard I'd never recognize Reinhardt, though I've listened to his music and heard his name for decades. Amazing what he could do with just two working fingers on his hand.
craig7 · 70-79, M
I recognised Duke Ellington straight off - the other man I couldn't name from the photo.As to "who was who" - had I not known who the "Duke "was,I probably would have picked correctly,but at the same time,yes,I take your point bijoux.
SW-User
i don't know who they are, but they look nearly the same in almost every way to me
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard crazy. we've come a long way, yet not far enough. it's fundamentally disappointing, when you consider George Floyd has only been gone just over 2 years
@SW-User True, and some people are still trying to justify his murder based on mistakes he made during his lifetime. Ironically, these are some of the same folks who think the police should’ve shown restraint while Ashli Babbitt was actively committing a crime. But I digress.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard it's totally befuddling, and their willful ignorance makes our country a more dangerous place for all of it's citizens. they are the danger.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
No at first glance they both appear white to me. Of course in the US most black people have some European genes.
@JimboSaturn Yes, that’s true.
bookerdana · M
I certainly know Duke Ellington😐..i admit i can't recognize the other musician
@bookerdana Django.
bookerdana · M
helenS · 36-40, F
Here's another good one with the Duke and Django:

Note the smile on the Duke's face!
@helenS Yes. They became good friends.
JustNik · 51-55, F
Not by skin tone in the photo certainly. I wouldn’t even know for sure one was black.
@JustNik Welcome to the one-drop rule. And Duke wasn’t biracial in the sense that it’s meant now—both of his parents were light-skinned black people.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Is the one on the right Cab Calloway?
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@bijouxbroussard looks like him 😮
@DearAmbellina2113 It’s Duke Ellington.
@DearAmbellina2113 They were contemporaries, though.
Byron8by7 · M
Duke Ellington is on the right: I don't recognize the man on the left.
@Byron8by7 He’s Django Reinhardt the guitarist.
Duke Ellington ... and who?
@bijouxbroussard Clearly, I don't know jazz.
@Mamapolo2016 You knew who Duke was. A lot of people wouldn’t. 👍🏽
@bijouxbroussard Thank you for that.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
The only clue to me is the hair but I might be wrong.
@BackyardShaman They both had straight hair.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Yes, yet I am a detailed oriented person. Compare the noses. There's a big difference.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I've already looked. Same difference across multiple images.

The flare of the nose.
@DeWayfarer So you looked at other photos ?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard it was the first thing I noticed in your own image. Then I went and looked.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I do didn't know they made an album together. I need the look fir it. Django was a jazz guitar hero of mine, Duke, well he was The Duke!
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard i listen to a lot of jazz shows on Sirius, and WBGO here in Newark, I was unaware of them ever playing together. I just looked for their recordings, i found a few on YouTube. I also never thought of "electric guitars" before Les Paul popularized them in the 1950s on. In a photo of Django playing honeysuckle rose see, there is a pickup attached to the sound hole of his instrument and a wire.

The photo was taken in 1946. Django lost a lot of money and The Duke apparently helped him recover.
@samueltyler2 They became good friends. I corrected the verbiage because I don’t think the album was made until after Django passed.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard what i listened to was really low quality recordings.
Nope, but I'm pretty sure I recognize the black guy.
@MistyCee I believe the photo was taken in 1946.
@bijouxbroussard Before my time, but I appreciate the music, even though I doubt I'd heard of him until Stevie Wonder's tribute.
@MistyCee Literally before my time, too. But I grew up hearing the music of both men, because my grandfather was a fan.
i would think so..
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
I honestly have to go by hair texture to figure it out.
@LordShadowfire They both had straight hair.
@LordShadowfire Personally I went with the eye brows.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard Looked to me like the gentleman on the right had cornrows. Maybe I need to look closer. Darn tiny phone screens.

Django was Romani so technically I think they derive from the Indian subcontinent if you go far enough back ... where does the arbitrary line between "white" and "brown" begin? Olive complexions or what? Are Palestinian Jews (e.g., JC) white? Are some southern Europeans white and others brown?

Oh well, I will just take this opportunity to throw in a gratutitous YouTube clip no one asked for because I never get tired of it lol (from the annual Django festival in the town where he retired)

[media=https://youtu.be/0kUbRxoMTM8]
@SW-User In the U.S. in the 1940s, yes they were. As I said to someone else, there were places Django could go that Duke couldn’t.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard ah, that's not cool then, and I was not aware of that
