Ethnicity, race…and music

I recently found this photo online. If you know jazz, you probably know who they are, and I think it’s from when they toured together.
But one thing I thought of: in the U.S., this is a picture of a white man and a black man. If you don’t know the individuals, would you be able to tell who was who ?

The one looked familiar then I saw "Old Brit" mention Duke and I remembered Duke Ellington, I had to study the photo a bit, I think it's the Duke on the right. I guess in many way's, being very light skinned was a kind of blessing, but I've heard even the gorgeous Lena Horne still had to deal with racism. Sad when being able to "pass" was considered an asset.
@Grateful4you Yes. It’s a weird concept, based on the "one drop rule" unique only to the U.S. (and possibly Apartheid-era South Africa).
