Ethnicity, race…and music

I recently found this photo online. If you know jazz, you probably know who they are, and I think it’s from when they toured together.
But one thing I thought of: in the U.S., this is a picture of a white man and a black man. If you don’t know the individuals, would you be able to tell who was who ?

Sammy Davis Jr. used to tell a joke: "My mother was born in San Juan. So I'm Puerto Rican, Jewish, colored and married to a white woman. When I move into a neighborhood, people start running four ways at the same time."

His mom was born in New York City of Afro-Cuban descent, actually. But why ruin a joke?
@SW-User Exactly right. And one reason he’d refer to her as Puerto Rican rather than Cuban was because of biases against Cubans, even back then.
