Atheists of SW: How certain are you that no higher power exists?

No judging, or trolling.

Just offer input.
Gusman · 61-69, M
In my opinion "Gods" are a human construct.
So I say I am 100% certain that there is no God, nor is there a Heaven or Hell.
sunnudenow · 70-79, M
@Gusman Imagine --- living for today. I am not the only one.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@sunnudenow I often wonder those really zealous religious people, those that live for the afterlife, will they have regrets on their death bed?
True believers most likely will not have regrets. Because they believe everything in the Bible is the word of "God"
Who am I to judge?
My belief is that I only get one life, so I will experience all that I want to experience whilst here.
Death will bring no more of anything.
@Gusman Not all of us Christians live for the afterlife. Jesus Christ taught us that we should live for today and labor in order to make the world a better place for everyone. Many Christians have the wrong idea about the bible and they're seeking only their self interests. Honestly, we aren't sure about the afterlife and maybe we shouldn't think so much about the afterlife. When it comes we will know.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
I don’t think about it. There’s no compelling necessity to even postulate such ridiculous fictions as gods.
Midnightoker1 · 61-69, M
I stopped being an atheist last Thursday, I've become a Buddhist and now believe in reincarnation.

So when I die, I've left all my money to ME!'
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@Midnightoker1 I once joked with a coworker at the bookstore where I was employed that when a Tibetan leader died he could leave his money to himself in his next life. That is what happened!
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
I'm open to the possibility of a higher power, it's just defining that higher power which is the tricky part. The alternatives are not limited to just monotheism or polytheism, but also things like deism, pantheism, or dualism. There's so much we just don't know about the formation of life or the origins of the universe

But if my options are between no god at all or the Abrahamic god of the Bible, which is usually how the argument is framed, I'm far, far more inclined to be certain of the former. The God of Christianity is logically inconsistent on so many dimensions that believing in him raises more questions than it answers. It would make more sense for there to be no higher power than to be subject to that specific deity.
@TinyViolins If you go about it cleverly, you can define the Big Bang as a higher power, wherein a higher power created the universe and then moved on - no intervention, no afterlife, just one Big Bang.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@ElwoodBlues Pantheism
@TinyViolins Or maybe picosecondtheism??
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
There is no celestial deity of any kind in this solar system. But there have been tens of millions of imaginary deities and real lunatics that people have worshipped as gods. The last such person was the Japanese emperor, who was deposed as a god after WWII.

The Bible even tells how people create gods. In essence, national leaders are like gods because they have the power to control your life and their decisions can determine whether you live or die. In effect, everyone is a god because we all have creative and destructive powers, far in excess of the primitive gods that ancient con men cooked up. No ancient god could do what the average intelligent person of today can do. Think about the typical things you do everyday that ancient people would have worshipped you as a god if they saw you doing those things.
DocSavage · M
How sure do we have to be ?
You have two very different uses for god. One is a creator, the other is a provider for the afterlife.
One doesn’t automatically guarantee the other.
This is a scientific argument against the existence of God, a modified form of the lack-of-evidence argument:

1. Hypothesize a God who plays an important role in the universe.

2. Assume that God has specific attributes that should provide objective evidence for his existence.

3. Look for such evidence with an open mind.

4. If such evidence is found, conclude that God may exist.

5. If such objective evidence is not found, conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that a God with these properties does not exist.
Most of the folks you classify as atheists are actually agnostics.

And one of the reasons we're agnostics is because we can't be certain that no higher power exists, even though the search for proof of a higher power continues to turn up nothing.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I think there are lots of gods. I like the ancient Egyptian and Hindu ones best. The Judeo/Christian/Muslim one seems like one of the worst.
Lynda70 · F
There is no real evidence of gods nor any reason to postulate the existence of gods. Based on those factors, I'm as certain as I can be that they do not exist.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
I'm sure there's no such thing as higher power, just the things we cannot explain/ understand yet, but I would never assign them any spiritual value.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Higher power? What's your definition? If you mean an entity that is the source of everything in the universe then the answer is an absolute no. If instead you mean an entity that is more powerful than us in some or all ways, then the answer is that such a thing is possible, we could be living in a simulation.

However, when people say that something is higher they usually attach a moral status to it. In which case I deny that either of the entities I outlined would necessarily be higher than us.
Northwest · M
I don't know that a singular higher power exists. There may be a purpose to existence, but it's not to serve fictional gods.
DocSavage · M
Beyond a reasonable doubt.
No judging, or trolling. and this coming from the man who has his middle finger flipping ya off.. good one
there is no god
spjennifer · 56-60, T
As an Agnostic, I would say that neither those who believe in a higher power, nor those of us who don't can ultimately prove beyond any doubt that either that higher power exists or doesn't. As one looks into the eyes of a new born child, those of a baby kitten or looks at a beautiful flower or the Northern Lights, you can't help but wonder how those things all came about, yes, Evolutionists will tell us that it all evolved from something or other but do they really have proof? no more than the Creationists do...
There could be certainly. But certain deities cant exist simply due to internal inconsistencies and using their own logic.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Even if such an entity did exist it this old statement applies:
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
OfCourse he is able.
Is he able but not willing?
OfCourse he is willing.
Is he able and willing?
OfCourse he is.
Then whence comes evil.
Is God going to stop people who do what they want and not what he says, when he has given warning after warning?
Has he not told us over and over the consequences of disobedience, death!
Then we ask why we have disasters?
thisgenericnamehere · 36-40, M
Until someone provides evidence, 100%.
sunnudenow · 70-79, M
Humans seem to want to find a reason for everything. Gods are their way of answering questions beyond their knowledge and investigative skill. They have invented answers. Proving that God exists in any form is not possible so the answer is "a matter of faith". Pax tecum.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
99.9% certain.
Belladonna · 41-45, F
I'm not completely certain, but then, I'm probably more agnostic.
Budwick · 70-79, M
DDonde · 31-35, M
Not certain about that at all. Also open to the possibility that none exists too

Beyond any doubt.

@bleach Is that so?
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
@bleach sadly in some evil regimes around the world people are being exterminated for believing the Bible
