How accurate is the Zodiac?

So ... your Zodiac sign is based on where the sun was when you were born, right?? 😏

I was born on February 22 so everyone says I'm a Pisces. With me so far? Well, that conclusion is based on where the sun was on February 22nd, 1995. Right? Nope!!!! It's not.

I know this video is 14 minutes long which is beyond the attention span of most of us, but it's fascinating (and I LOVE Neil deGrasse Tyson!)

[media=https://youtu.be/3SFI3N4SAZI]

The current zodiac is at least a month off. I'm not a Pisces at all because while the sun was in Pisces on February 22 two thousand years ago when the signs were placed on the modern calendar, it was NOT in Pisces in 1995 on that date.

To understand that and a bunch of other mind-blowing astrophysics, check out the video. It's only 14 minutes. 😁

Whatever sign you think you are right now ... you are not that. 🤣

@tenente Omg, this is hilarious.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@tenente I love this.

MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I bought a book that based the location of the sun,stars in relation to location where I was born and it is scary accurate.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@sarabee1995 It was based on date and time of my birth.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@BlueSkyKing From a company called “Birthdate.com”.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@MrBrownstone If you watch the video, you'll understand that it wasn't. Sorry. :)
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
Never been interested in Zodiac Star Signs so not really bothered about their inaccuracies.
Stephie · 22-25, F
@KiwiBird My Zodiac is pretty accurate, provided I know how and where I want to go 😏

sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@KiwiBird Same ... I just like the way Neil uses science to prove the absurdity of it all. :)
UndeadSona · F
Well all I know is that whatever sign you are I am since I was born on the 21st the year before
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@UndeadSona Is your birthday February 21st? That's my birthday. I was born in 1986.
UndeadSona · F
@Crazychick yeah that's kinda wild ngl
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Crazychick @UndeadSona Cool cool ... And I'm 22 February 1995. 😁
You mention astrophysics. Any actual science behind the claim? Do a simple search for "astrology research results" and see what comes up. Nothing. What organization would invest the money on anecdotes?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@sarabee1995 He's so dead set on making this his whole personality that he doesn't realize the two of you agree.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@BlueSkyKing Exactly.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@LordShadowfire Lol, yeah, I noticed that. 🤣🤣🤣
TinyViolins · 36-40, M
Not very. The earth does not spend an equal amount of time under the different constellations forming the celestial axis we get our zodiac from. Some signs we're under for 5 or 6 weeks, some about 2 or 3. Assigning them to months was a dumb idea since we don't spend a neat 30 or 31 days being born under the same sign

But also there are other constellations in that same axis, like Ophiuchus, that are completely ignored by astrology. It's just that the ancient Babylonians were math nerds and liked the number 12 because of how mathematically unique it was.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@TinyViolins Yes, Ophiuchus is discussed in the video.
ineedadrink · 56-60, M
Added to the calendar modification of Pope Gregory, total astronomical chaos. 😅
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@ineedadrink Lol, yup.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
I think it is pretty accurate. My birthday is February 21st and I'm a Pisces.

FYI, the Sun WAS in Pisces on February 22nd 1995 at around the third degree, I've just checked on this site:

https://alabe.com/freechart/

I used my own birthplace to check but you can try it yourself entering your own birthplace.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Lovesungoddess Enter your birth details into this and you will soon find out.

@Crazychick

Wow very accurate.

Rising Sign is in 23 Degrees Gemini
Extremely active by nature, you like to get around, meet people and do different things. Very restless, you just can't seem to stay put. You need to be involved in several projects at once in order to keep your mind stimulated. You like to read books and to write letters and to talk -- constantly. Seemingly ageless, you will always appear to be much younger than you really are. Very adaptable and inquisitive, you are always open to new ideas and experiences. A "jack-of-all-trades", you are lively and versatile. Because of the high nervous tension that you always seem to have, athletic activity would be a good way for you to burn off energy. But be careful of a tendency to experience things only superficially -- try to dig in and absorb things at a deeper level.

Sun is in 20 Degrees Scorpio.
Intense and complex by nature, you have extremely strong emotional reactions to most situations. Feelings are often very difficult for you to verbalize. Therefore you have a tendency to be very quiet - - to brood and think a lot. You seldom get overtly angry, but, when you do, you are furious and unforgiving. When you make an emotional commitment, it is total -- you are not attracted to superficial or casual relationships. If you are challenged, you take it as a personal affront and tend to lash out and fight back in a vengeful manner. You love mysteries and the supernatural. A good detective, you love getting to the roots of problems and you enjoy finding out what makes other people tick. You are known to be very willful, very powerful and quite tenacious!

Moon is in 03 Degrees Pisces.
You have strong feelings and are extremely sensitive. It would help if you had a thicker skin -- you tend to react emotionally to every situation you come across. Kind, gentle and considerate of the feelings of others, you are good at taking care of the sick, wounded and helpless. But you tend to absorb the energy of others -- so avoid those who are always negative. You have a rich, creative and lively imagination, but you should be careful not to spend all your time daydreaming. Very intuitive, you have good ESP and may be quite clairvoyant or psychic. Remember that you too have the right to get what you want from life. If you are always defensive and kowtowing to others, people will take advantage of you and exploit you.

Mercury is in 19 Degrees Scorpio.
You are a born investigator. You are fascinated by secrets and mysteries and unanswered questions of any kind. When you become upset or angry, your emotional reactions are overpowering -- reason and logic disappear in an uncontrollable passionate outburst. You tend to keep your thoughts secret and bottled up and this makes others regard you with suspicion. It is not that you are trying purposely to be evasive, it is just that you would rather not deal with the explosions and hassles that often occur when you reveal your true feelings and opinions. Your sense of humor tends toward sarcasm and irony.

Venus is in 01 Degrees Scorpio.
Your feelings about others are deep, powerful, intense and complex. When you like someone, you do so totally and obsessively if you do not like someone, they do not exist. Your faithfulness and loyalty to your lover is unquestioned, indeed at times it is too much so -- you get so possessive that you almost smother your partner. At times, your feelings are kept deep within you and, because they are so complex and intense, they frighten you -- this is the way that you try to ignore them. But the more you try to do this, the more explosive things get when you eventually do express them.

Mars is in 18 Degrees Libra.
You are very aware of the need to cooperate with others in order to further any effort. You are usually willing to compromise with others, although you can be quite competitive in a friendly way. Very fair- minded and impartial, you have the ability to sense injustice and the desire to take corrective actions to make proper compensations. You see both sides of issues and questions, but you tend to be undecided or wavering when forced to make choices that might make you vulnerable or unpopular.

Jupiter is in 17 Degrees Leo.
You must be proud of all that you do in order to grow and develop. You enjoy being totally honest and aboveboard and you revel in the admiration and respect you receive from others due to your high- minded, upright way of life. Make sure, though, that your natural tendency to boast and show off is based on your actual accomplishments. Don't fall prey to self-exaggeration or arrogance. You truly do like outrageous spectacles and grand jolly times and will go out of your way to make them a reality.

Saturn is in 28 Degrees Gemini.
You are such a clear thinker and speaker, with a logical orderly mind, that you are repulsed by abstract, intangible or unorganized thoughts or ideas. But you tend to get uptight about speaking in public because you are afraid to be wrong. Remember that the best way to learn is by making mistakes. Also, you will be so carefully prepared that you probably will not make many mistakes anyway. To be interesting to you, ideas have to be practical and useful.

Uranus is in 24 Degrees Aquarius.
You, and most of your peer group as well, are reformers at heart. You want to make positive changes that will benefit society as a whole. You are willing to devote your time and energy to see that they come about, especially if the proper group support and combined purpose of will can be found. Be careful that your devotion to group goals does not produce too much friction or neglect in your own interpersonal one-on-one relationships.

Neptune is in 08 Degrees Aquarius.
You, and your entire generation, will idealize and even venerate the ability to remain detached as well as the ability to objectively analyze any given situation. There will be a concerted effort on your part to cure the ills of society as a whole. But be very careful to continue to maintain and protect the rights of individuals in the midst of these potentially far-reaching changes.

Pluto is in 16 Degrees Sagittarius.
For your entire generation, society's cherished beliefs and totems will be radically changed. Many traditional concepts will be totally altered, if not completely destroyed. The rights of individuals to pursue their own course in life will be reasserted.

N. Node is in 08 Degrees Gemini.
You will consciously seek out many different contacts with others throughout your life. Many of these will be of very short duration, not necessarily because you're fickle, but just because you always seem to be more excited by the prospect of meeting someone new rather than prolonging your present relationships. At any rate, you will learn something new from almost everyone you come across -- intellectual stimulation is what you crave from others. You will be well known to neighbors and relatives, partly due to your curiosity about what they're doing -- you delight in keeping up-to-date about the latest news (and gossip).
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Lovesungoddess I would recommend that site to anyone.
Peaceandnamaste · 26-30, F
You have a sun sign and also a moon sign and a rising sign and also 12 houses.

Astrology also comes with birth of place and time of birth.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Peaceandnamaste Yup. Understood. It is those sun signs (Aquarius, Pisces, and so on) that are assigned based on where on the ecliptic the sun is when we are born.

But the problem is that the dates assigned to each (21 Feb thru 20 March, etc) were assigned over two thousand years ago. Over the last two thousand years our orbit has shifted enough that the sun is "behind" about a month since those dates were assigned to our arbitrary and man-made calendar.

So someone who thinks they are a Pisces (me) was actually born with the Sun in Aquarius. 🤣🤣🤣
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
You've slipped back from Pisces to Aquarius, but I'm still a Virgo (Sept 21)!

@Thinkerbell Lol, that's funny! People who actually believe in and follow astrology have often guessed I was Aquarius.

Penny · 46-50, F
your sun sign is based on where the sun was in the sky from the vantage point of where you were born and at what time. you also have a sign for every planet and what sign was on the horizon at birth that affects you.
Penny · 46-50, F
its based on the constellations in relation to the sun's position on your time of birth @sarabee1995 it goes in a cycle i think. as far as the earths orbit goes, they demoted pluto. who gives a fuck its all for fun. if it rings true for you it rings true if it doesnt it doesnt. theres things like progressions which supposedly can alter your sun sign throughout your life too in some schools of astrology. also they say when your on the cusp after you turn about thirty you morph into the next sign. i always assumed though that the ephemeris charts were updated. idk but idgaf. im definitely a libra/scorpio.
@Penny Most "professional" astrologers don’t accept cusps. They always say you have to look at the whole chart instead. The ancient astrologers actually did painstaking observations of stars and planets. All with the naked eye, so no charts with planets beyond Saturn. Even then, those new planets were not officially named for decades after each discovery.

My question is what group of people decided what attributes got assigned? Did an astrologers convention meet in a city to choose what attributes got transferred to Pluto?

@jshm2 Neil deGrasse Tyson is still a genius. You just don't care for him because he's debunked your particular mythology over the years.

As for your statement about astrology, technically speaking, you're right. The stars have absolutely nothing to do with it. However... it has been proven to some extent that the time and date of your birth, as well as location, does have some impact on your personality. It's just that the stars are a convenient way of charting that.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@jshm2 We are in agreement regarding astrology.

As for Neil, he is a legit genius and uses impeccable logic to analyze a myriad of topics.

@HijabaDabbaDoo Not sure, but as I follow the science in the video, it seems we are all about one month prior to whatever we thought we were.

sarabee1995 · 31-35, F

Okay, so I tried to be a good boy and watch the entire video before asking questions, but I guess the main one I need an answer to is, on July 7th, 1975, at 11ish a.m., what constellation was up there? Because yeah. 2000 years ago, I'd have been a Cancer.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Crazychick He explains it in excruciating detail in the video.

Astrological signs were created two thousand years ago.

The dates on our completely arbitrary and man-made calendar were assigned based on the sun positions during the year then and have never been adjusted.

You can verify this yourself.

Download any one of the many astronomy apps that find the constellations for you (not an astrology app, but an astronomy app ... I like Star Tracker). Looking up from my bed, I can tell you that Saturn is in Aquarius right now over my head.

Now... Using that app, check out where the sun is. Right now, looking at my floor (because it's nighttime here and the sun is on the other side of the world) I can see that the sun is in Virgo. But it's September 26. The sun is not supposed to be in Virgo according to astrology.

This is easy to verify yourself. 🙂
Crazychick · 36-40, F

sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Crazychick Yes. On Astrology sites and apps they list the sun as being in Pisces (because they have not updated in 2000 years -- the video explains this). But Pisces is an actual place in the sky with known borders and outlines. On any Astronomy app or website you can see where everything actually is.

Here is the sky at about noon on my birth date:

The sun is clearly in Aquarius, not Pisces. You can see Pisces up and to the left further along the Ecliptic.

@ThirstenHowl I also love Neil. I've watched so many of his vids. And yeah, this one made my head hurt. I think I watched it like three times and took a page of notes before I could say "Eureka! I got it!" 🤣🤣🤣
In the early 80's the Los Angeles Times dropped their horrorscope service subscription and got permission from them to run old ones as a test, the same letters of "my horrorscope is so accurate today" as before, that's when horrorscopes lost popularity when the L.A. Times ran it as a front page headline, and made international news as well. When I was a kid in the 70's, restsurants and stores sold monthly horrorscope scrolls for a quarter through vending machines, they were always sold out by the end of the first day and would sit empty the rest of the month.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@NativePortlander1970 Yeah, personally I find the whole subject a bit absurd and now we see that the dates we assign on our calendar for the various signs are actually off by a month!!! ROTFLMAO!!!
