Should religion be banned? [Spirituality & Religion]

With all the fighting and purging in the name of religion....is religion causing more harm than good? And should it be banned?
Caprice · 41-45, F
I don’t think it should be banned entirely, but it should be banned from government.
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@Caprice so freedom of religion....but ones who believe in Sharia law...those ones are not allowed...correct?

You realize that there are places in the world where the government is run by religious beliefs. Things like stonings and honour killings are government sanctioned. The people who believe in this system do not recognize any other system.

So how can we allow people in who believe that, and still retain our "freedom of religion" rule??

We have a problem
Caprice · 41-45, F
I never said I believed in freedom of religion. You said that. I said religion and government should be separate.
But yes, if your religion requires honor killings and stoning, then my opinion is that it should be banned. ANY religion that self governs rather than recognize the established laws of a secular government should not be tolerated. This is not a one world nation now, and it never will be. You know why? Religion.@Mongoheadmonster
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@Caprice freedom of religion....the Constitution says that. Freedom of religion in Canada is a constitutionally protected right, allowing believers the freedom to assemble and worship without limitation or interference.

So then does it need revised? 🤔 I think it does
SW-User
No. If we are going to make a list of things people are fighting about we would ban most things.

There have been plenty of conflicts in the name of democracy. Should we ban that also?
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@SW-User no. But we should ban the forcing of democracy on places where it isn't welcome.
SW-User
@Mongoheadmonster How would you enforce that?
expomasseur · 36-40, M
Evil will exist either way. Some evil just prefers to hide behind "religion". It's like trying to ban guns in order to end violence. Yeah, it will make a small dent in the numbers, but it causes just as many issues as it solves without dealing with the root of the problem.
Karmalives · 51-55, M
There are pros and cons to EVERYTHING.. I am not religious at all, but it helps and hurts many... Money fucks up alot of people but banning it would solve nothing.. it's not so important on what you practice as what the outcome becomes from what you practice.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Thing is, you can believe anything you want but trying to change things that affect others is not ok. This is the issue with the abortion controversy, lifestyle choices, food, clothing styles, women's rights, racism... Keep your opinions to yourself. Believe in pixies, angels, leprechauns, unicorns, or ancient aliens I don't care.
Fernie · F
@Tastyfrzz will you care if any of those beliefs negatively impact your rights and life???
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
They really shouldn't if they keep them private.
Fernie · F
@Tastyfrzz but they don't and they won't...
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
Once again, people confuse "religion" with a relationship with God. "Religion" is a set of doctrines and rituals set by people to control the relationship between God and people. It is two different concepts.
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@JustinOnTheRoad Religion is merely the language that people use to express what is fundamentally inexpressible.
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@Mongoheadmonster

Not so sure, I believe that's incorrect.
Should homosexuals be banned?
@revenant
Not at all, unless you are muslimies lol
revenant · F
@TheeOriginalAmazingsEXLover wait another month
@revenant
Will you dye your hair black and all? 😉 my type of lady lol!
No, banning religion isn’t the answer. That simply makes martyrs, as it has in times past. But keeping it separate from law, not allowing religious beliefs to dictate laws that affect people who are not bound by religious doctrine, is the way to keep things fair to everyone. A clear, well-defined separation between church (or synagogue, or temple) and state.
@Mongoheadmonster It also needs to be written into law so that fundamentalist Christians can’t rob citizens of their rights as well. I don’t know if you’re aware of various “Freedom of religion” statutes that have popped up all over the country, but especially in the south and Midwest, spelling out that businesses can refuse to provide services based upon religious beliefs. Someone refusing to bake a cake for a gay couple is one thing, but companies refusing to include contraception in the healthcare packages of their employees, is another, and the proposal that doctors, attorneys, police, firefighters, etc., should have similar latitude based upon religious belief is when it becomes truly frightening. These people are already here and fully supported by the current administration.
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard....well then maybe banning all religion isn't such a stupid idea then
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard if the children can't play nice, then maybe they shouldn't be allowed to play that game anymore
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Can't ban belief, lest we become a dystopian authoritarian society under a dogma that one must only believe in x or y.

Then we would become like the old religious societies themselves, but without the meaning it held to the people who followed it.
indyjoe · 56-60, M
Religion itself is not the problem though religion is manmade...it's the PEOPLE who follow it that is the problem. Humans have a tendency that no matter how good or well intentioned something may be to screw it up.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
You can't ban it. It's far to pervasive. Yet I really like to get it out of government at least. Although good number of the laws on the books are mostly based on religion. Like all the marriage laws and tax codes.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@SatanBurger I agree with a lot of what you say, yet I do not believe it is enough. Yes banning doesn't make sense, yet without some way to limit religion those of zealous beliefs will get into office and therefore attempt to change the laws more towards their religious beliefs. Also in democracy one group of religious people can vote for candidates that are aligned towards their own beliefs. All it would take is a majority. This is the situation we in the U.S. are in today. And why there has never been a none- Christian president. Just look at the uproar that was made when some thought Obama was a Muslim even though it was not true.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@DeWayfarer You are right, it's partially one of the major pitfalls of a democratic society is that we are often held hostage by a majority.
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
This is what some are warning us about. I forget what it's called but it's a non hostile takeover. Slowly building numbers up until they can put their own people in charge....
Fernie · F
It should be banned from politics...it's seeping into everything these days...again...like a mind eating virus. More and more Atheists are popping up and that is a good thing
Cmstars · 22-25, F
A great majority of people believe or practice some sort of religion but you ask if we should ban it? Okay.
@Cmstars
HAHA, he's a lunatic!
SW-User
Never happen. In fact we will have a one world religion before it’s over. Not that it’s a good thing.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I do think it qualifies under the wmd description
Karmalives · 51-55, M
@ozgirl512 wmd ?
Karmalives · 51-55, M
@ozgirl512 shit nevermind... I got it 😉
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@Karmalives weapons of mass destruction
While it does cause a lot of harm. Most people aren't extremists. Also how would a person ban it without becoming the exact thing they are banning it for? A persecutor. Also it is an idea. Ideas can't be banned. Only by killing the people carrying the idea. But even then it want work. Cold War, terrorism? Both ideas in minds.
@TexChik
Absolutely, this is why you're so hot, LOL; all joking aside
@TexChik
😍😍🥰😘😘😘
luv2fly352 · 70-79, M
The obvious problem with banning religion(s) or anything else is which group or groups of individuals gets to choose what's banned,and based on what criteria? This kind of thinking or mindset leads toward Auschwitz.Take care!
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Any time you look at religious conflict and dig deep enough, there's someone making money. That's the real root cause.
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@CountScrofula was it money that sparked the modern day jihad in the late 1970s? No it wasn't. The modern jihadist movement emerged when several groups began campaigns to overthrow the Arab World's regimes and establish Islamic states.
BiblicalWarrior · 51-55, M
Let's get back to doing things the way Christ taught us and give up these ridiculous notions and additions foisted on us by the "religious" people.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
As the greatest mass murderers of the last century were all atheists, by the same token atheism should be banned.
BiblicalWarrior · 51-55, M
@Speedyman Atheism is a religion.
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
Thankyou everyone who replied to my question. Open dialogue in a civil manner is important.......cheers 🍻
Tennessee · 46-50, F
What about Alabamians being gods? We are the gods, religion is just different variations.
GodSpeed63 · 61-69, M
Yes. Relationship with God, Yahweh, shouldn't be banned but accepted.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
No, in time they will all wither away, but you cant ban what people believe.
Whatcha · 41-45, F
Lol you are kidding right?
Mongoheadmonster · 41-45, M
@Whatcha no...it's a serious question.
revenant · F
install cults instead
how can you ban a belief?

@Emosaur You obviously don't know much about religion...most religions have basic teachings in peace, love, and harmony. And yes some have teachings in fighting and war...but that is the manmade additions to it and it is the PEOPLE who teach it and follow it who decide how it is followed, not the religion itself. To say otherwise is denying human and personal responsibility.

@Emosaur But ban it, and it would go underground and become even more extreme.
