Is Your Job AI Proof? Or Under Threat?

Please comment what you do for a living and if you're worried about AI replacing you or not. How likely can you be replaced? Or the opposite... How UNLIKELY can you be replaced? Is your role AI proof?

I need to know which new skills to learn.
I work for the government and although my job could easily be replaced by AI it won't be because 1, our union wouldn't allow it, and 2, we are also about 40 years behind in utilizing technology. Our most common method of communication is fax and I'm not even joking.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
@MrBlueGuy Lol my spouse works for the state and those things EXACTLY, even IF the Union somehow approved, it's not like tax payers are gonna vote to fund the tech upgrades. It's a comical thought.
exexec · 61-69, C
My old jobs in risk analysis and other analytical foci could be replaced by AI because they were data-driven and used established algorithms. My old job of managing a team of very smart people could not be replaced by AI.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
Was made redundant from an IT support role a year ago. Imagined the AIpocalypse so I went and got a forklift licence, drove around a warehouse for 6 months. Got offered another opportunity back in my previous industry, so I'm back to white collar for now.

But I'm not naive, the AI wave is coming again eventually, I'm staying at this new place because it's great for my resume but I'm diversifying
Starguy · 26-30, M
@plungesponge Hey man thank you for sharing your story. A lot of people are saying "embrace AI" but we never hear real life negative affects that AI had on people. We need more like you to share their story, I appreciate it.

Good to diversify your resume. Hopefully you won't get unlucky again.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
@Starguy my biggest advice for anyone who works on a computer all day: Assess your boss, then assess your CEO. If they are the kind of people that might throw you under the bus to get AI qualifications into the team, start getting ready. Remember your boss might be super nice, but if they aren't in control, they are just following the orders of the bloodsuckers upstairs.

Check if your company has made clear plans to incorporate AI and explained how they will upskill employees for that outcome. If they have said nothing, they likely have no plan, the real plan is they are just waiting for an "AI transformation expert" to come along and tell them what genius leaders they will be by replacing your yearly salary with some code, regardless of whether that code is up to scratch or not.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
I do a lot of algebra, write a lot of code, and do modeling and data analysis. Someday AI will do all that, and already is making inroads. I should learn how to use AI tools. Hopefully it will enhance and improve my work, but still require me. Yet all I need is to have a job for 7 more years. Then I retire and if they never replace me, that is fine. Except some young person will have to look elsewhere for a job.

Righr now the only AI I use are in Google searches! And the like.
I’d love to see AI pull a mangled duck from a non-return valve..
My job is AI proof, but it's not safe from this digital world, a printing press. I'm afraid for those people who thought their work was safe from automation and digital "innovation" as many are in for a surprise. Labour and trade jobs just got a lift as those can't be replaced by AI for now, while everything, involving thought, can be.

It ironically turns the table in a way.

I work directly with clients themselves but even i can see a time when personal care is dumped in favour of client interacting with q&a dataface if the supplying company thinks thats sufficient and more of the client incurred cost goes directly to the company supplying it.
....and still no A:I to do the ironing for you !
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I'm a brine taster over at the pickle factory and so far no machine can do that. I always wanted to be an olive stuffer but that career is gone now, replaced by a machine. My old pal Shorty "Fingers" McDougal, the best olive stuffer ever, lives under a bridge in Kankakee now.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
I’m assuming I’m safe….I work for road maintenance: pothole patching/repair, bridge washing, sign repairs/installs, road cleanup, roadkill disposal, culvert steaming, etc

I can’t see those things being done by AI….?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@ImpeccablyImperfect Especially when AI can't pick out stop signs in a group of pictures.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
AI will very likely be integrated into my role. It *should* make it easier but someone will still need to key prompts into the AI for output thus my job should still exist.

I maintain a portion of master data for a large corporation.
QueenOfZaun · 26-30, F
Not me but my sister is about to lose her job to A.I. She does accounting/payroll for a company and in a few months A.I is replacing her

I'm a stay-at-home girlfriend so I don't need to worry about that
Katie01 · F
@Starcrossed jealous? 😂
Starcrossed · 41-45, F

Nah, troll.
Katie01 · F
@Starcrossed it's cute you're so upset about nothing 😂
Unless they figure out how to make people stop calling to complain about something I got a job. lol
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
I hire and train the people who make AI. Not sure what that makes me.
scorpiolovedeep · 46-50, M
Absolutely.
No frigging robot can replace mine.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
AI proof. Big pharma too
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I'm presently in data processing. Not AI proof, but a little longer of a tail since I'm prepping and formatting data for AI to be able to understand and use more effectively.

I'm not in immediate danger of replacement, but I don't believe I'll have time to hit age of retirement before I'm replaced unless capabilities start plateauing pretty fast.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Once I do get replaced, I may very well end up on disability if we haven't gotten UBI or something in place. I'm in a wheelchair and my hands aren't fully functional. So if AI sweeps software engineering I don't have a lot of other options.
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
Unless AI can walk 8-10 miles a day to do my job,I think I'm okay
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
@Starguy Although AI is used to predict/forecast how busy the business will be. Don't know how, you'd think people are paid to do that!
Starguy · 26-30, M
@HotPizza71 AI tends to do that through analysing historical data that can be found online, takes seconds compared to analysis through people.
Sounds enticing if you're a CEO who's always looking to save a buck.
@HotPizza71

I am afraid I cannot disclose what my role is, as I work for an organization which, strictly speaking, does not exist. Needless to say, it is a condition of my continued presence on this planet. Even my roommate does not know.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@CorvusBlackthorne Well, I do now! Wtf?
@LordShadowfire You will forget that you know that if you wish to continue enjoying the use of my ship's technology.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
My role is absolutely AI proof. The reason being that AI cannot own property.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
I work in healthcare im all set.

@DDonde I feel like people who work directly on the computer with software are most at risk. Like data analyst and even possible software engineers with the new release of Devin.
Seems the further away your role is from a computer the more years your role has before AI can get anywhere near it.
DDonde · 31-35, M
@Starguy I would say it's more about how the leadership feels than about its actual capability. They call the shots, even if they're stupid about this technology. Those that work directly and exclusively with computers are definitely first on the chopping block, but everybody else is also coming too.
Starguy · 26-30, M
@DDonde Yeah true, it always does come down to who calls the shots at the end of the day.
