We conduct phone or Zoom interviews with several applicants.

Then we meet and discuss them, and we narrow down the list to those we wish to invite for an on site visit
SW-User
@nerdynerd I get that but what’s the point of a video and in person interview?
nerdynerd · 61-69, M
@SW-User Please read my response to apersonnamedit.

An inperson interview lasts one or two days, as the candidate meets with members of the department, with administrators, students, and gives a presentation of their work.

Years ago, we used to select candidates to invite for site visits without doing a preliminary video interview.( For one thing, the technology wasn't there yet.) It was very costly, time intensive, and inefficient.

The hiring decision was mine. I had a great HR person who screened applications, did phone interviews, and gave me the top three candidates. We almost always agreed on which one to hire, but she wanted me to make my decision before she told me her choice. Sometimes it was easy, but sometimes it was difficult. We were trying to be fair to all.
SW-User
@exexec you don’t think it’s best to do it all in one day?
exexec · 61-69, C
@SW-User Impossible in our situation, We were dealing with people with advanced degrees to work sensitive programs. Background checks were mandatory.
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
Because different interviewers are interested in certain answers at each level.

First, they want to know if you are what you say you are in your CV.

Second, they want to know if you have skills or experiences they are looking for.

Third, they want to see how you compare against all the other prospects that reached the 2nd stage.

If you are being interviewed initially by a DECISION MAKER or a major STAKEHOLDER, the screening process will be quicker, but it's not set up like that with large companies.

Edit: Depending on how sensitive the role is, a background check can be done.
SW-User
@IamCuriousBabe you don’t think it’s feasible to just do one video interview?
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@SW-User Depends on the role. Can't be decided on when the candidate is being screened for multiple skill sets. Compare applying for a job as a restaurant server versus an IT project manager.
Because when they went into outlook to schedule the interview they saw that all three people wanting to interview you were not available at the same time that week.

Also often in larger companies the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

They don't care if it is organized for you because they have a mindset that you are lucky to even be talked to. They only care if it suits them.
SW-User
@orioninthenight that makes sense I don’t like it but yes 🥹
SW-User
it's all a screening process. can you make it through all the hoops is your first test(s)
SW-User
@SW-User apparently not I’m still looking for another job
SW-User
@SW-User everyone's gotta find their cheese. yours is out there. much luck in locating it soon
SW-User
@SW-User appreciate it
apersonnamedit · 26-30, T
To really make us jump through hoops and to see how much bs we are willing to go through to get the job I think
nerdynerd · 61-69, M
@apersonnamedit No. It is expensive and time consuming for us to pay for a candidate to travel to us, put them in a motel, and spend two days with them. So we use preliminary online interviews as a screening process to help us narrow down the list.

We certainly do not want to inflict "bullshit" on the very people we hope to attract.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
I think it should depend on the job if honest and what it entails
Weve had some really crap analyst's in but we do one interview so i asked whether it would be worth doing a aptitude test for part of it. But i think more so because a lot say they can use excel but they only know the autosum function lol
SW-User
@Gangstress It’s time consuming and stupid
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Whats the job?
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@SW-User i see. Well it makes sense i guess for a leadership role. This one person has to represent others in the name of thier company. Its got to be the right guy. Are you the right guy?
SW-User

Usually HR, then the hiring managers review applicants, interview and might interview again to get a final list. Everything moves you up or down the list 📃
