I've touched 80mph once or twice, and only briefly, but my car's not really built for Autostrade speeds. That was probably overtaking downhill on a motorway, to pass one 40tonne lorry overtaking a couple of others at their speed difference of 3mph.
More importantly I do not intend to break the speed-limit! It is just not worth risking a hefty fine, probable "points" on my still-clean licence, and increased insurance premiums; just to save a few minutes that rarely need "saving".
I applied basic arithmetic to a journey I take occasionally, of about 310 miles each way with 210 on the motorway. The other 100 are on ordinary roads with many obstacles and speed limts.
The difference between 70mph and 60mph maintained throughout that entire motoway stretch is only 30 minutes!
So insignificant. (The arrival times on these journeys are not important. If they were I'd obviously start an hour earlier.)
It is of course impossible to achieve such driving in reality, and the mean speed for these journeys is <50mph, even with minimum fuelling and "T&P" stops to a minimum.
The significant difference is in fuel consumption, of course. I've not measured it but my car's most efficient cruising speed is probably 60-65mph.
The spped limits in the UK are 70mph on motorways and dual-carriageways, 60 on single-carriageway roads, except in built-up areas or where otherwise stated.

120. Many years ago in my Chevelle SS 454. It's a bit of a careless story. 🫣

@JackDaniels Yes and I would put vinyl protectant on it and make it look even better!
JackDaniels · 46-50, M
@Magenta Yes it does. Muscle cars look good with them.
FieldMarshal · 46-50, M
@JackDaniels oh yeah!! Good old days. I mean we have good days now too. The muscles back then were at different level.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
130ish on accident. I wasn’t paying attention to my speed, and it was a quick quiet car. When I suddenly realized it wasn’t that other people were driving slowly, I slowed down 😂
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
@FieldMarshal Likewise, but it’s not a financially viable model for manufacturers…not enough demand. Hell, so few people here know how to drive stick, it’s basically an anti theft device 😂
supersnipe · 61-69, M
@Zaphod42 Left foot down, change gear, left foot up 🙂
FieldMarshal · 46-50, M
@Zaphod42 Exactly, mass production for masses...
ScreamingFox · 41-45, F
Driven, 100. As a passenger my dad hit 130 on the highway in an old two seater convertible he was working on with no floor. I was maybe 12, feet on frame in the back area watching the drive shaft spin believing I was going to die.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@ScreamingFox Yep, no seatbelts. I remember going to my uncles cottage with 2 families in one car, kids on laps, car rammed with luggage and food. We just never thought about any of that stuff.
Sitting on a case of beer on my dad's bike handlebars, no helmut lol

FieldMarshal · 46-50, M
@JimboSaturn I think back then it was norm, smoking like crazy, and drinking seat belts, if you really were lucky and cared for, however, those cars were built like tanks.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@FieldMarshal Yes all steel!
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M

@PerfectionOfTheHeart Thats pretty cool. I have done almost 100 on I90 and I80
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@FieldMarshal Noice! It’s kinda hard not to when it’s laid it that beautifully for it.
FieldMarshal · 46-50, M
@PerfectionOfTheHeart I know right! Some of the flat planes sections...i was worried about getting ticket but managed to scape it. Lol
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
Probably about 80mph I like to be safe.

@Teggy Ah the 401! I forgot you were Canadian. I think it would be easy to do on the 407 a night, it's straighht and deserted.
@JimboSaturn you're not wrong but the 401 at 130-2am were pretty empty and straight on a Saturday night back in I'd say 2008.
And the shop was literally a overlooking the 401
