Ever let your teen who was raised in the suburbs drive to the city?

[c=BF0080]My dad said, “you learned to drive that big truck with your permit alone here, she’ll be fine.” Me: “She’ll freak once she’s on 95, even with me.”

Daughter trying to merge on 95 freaked out and at a complete stop:

Me: (Screams) Get aggressive!!

Her: (After finally getting aggressive and on the road) “Why are these people so mean?”

Then she waves everyone to get in front of her on another highway so they don’t feel like she did till she saw this guy(right not in a lane) later 😂 “What’s wrong with these people today?!”

My poor child. I said I’m sorry I yelled at you before, but I didn’t think you would’ve moved. She agreed and said she doesn’t ever wanna drive to the Bronx again 🤣 She will with me though till she’s comfortable enough to do it on her own. [/c]
deadteddy · 26-30, F
I understand her. I’ve been driving for a few years now and I still wonder why are people so mean 😭. I think merging is one of the most difficult things for people who are learning how to drive, and that she could do it without crashing says she will be a good driver, have patience with her 💜
MellyMel22 · F
@deadteddy [c=BF0080]Awh 🥺 I def understand. I just know her and if I didn’t push her to go, she wouldn’t had. That was the only time I yelled, but not outta no patience, I didn’t want us to get hit. They fly in that spot. [/c]

@MellyMel22
That was the only time I yelled, but not outta no patience, I didn’t want us to get hit.
In that situation it was definitely the right thing to do.
MellyMel22 · F
@deadteddy [c=BF0080]That highway in that area is bad. She thought I was exaggerating warning her and asking if she was sure she wanted to drive there. [/c]
CestManan · 46-50, F
Slightly off subject but speaking of stopping on the highway, why is it that some cities are putting these damn stop lights at the end of the on-ramp just before it hits the highway?

I thought that was just in Colorado springs but they're doing it in my city too
CestManan · 46-50, F
@MellyMel22 I mean if somebody has a fast car they can get 0 to 60 in just a few seconds then it wouldn't be a problem but otherwise all it does is present a different type of safety hazard.

It is not solving any problems, just rearranging them.

We can never wait until we are old enough to drive but then we get out on the road behind the wheel and find out what it's really like.
MellyMel22 · F
@CestManan [c=BF0080]Yeah, I get it. It doesn’t make much sense. [/c]

I went to Vegas this year. When going to the Grand Canyon the entry to the high way was so freaking short and in a rented unknown car that was not comfortable. 😅

That wasn't the worst thing though. 😬
Classified · M
@MellyMel22 It ended well though. The road became clearly visible from the reflected lights from my headlights. It was quite smart of them to create the road like that.
MellyMel22 · F
@Classified [c=BF0080]Well that’s good at least! [/c]
Classified · M
@MellyMel22 Very. It was a welcome sight. Much of a relief and wonder 😁
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
If she learns to drive there she will be able to drive anywhere
MellyMel22 · F
@Jenny1234 [c=BF0080]That’s what I told her! [/c]
Glad you survive that, you and your daughter both. Not even sure I would drive there. Lol
@MellyMel22 Bet that was you when your daughter stopped too. 😂😂😂😂
MellyMel22 · F
@Sojournersoul [c=BF0080]No, she kept asking me why the people driving were so mean. 😆[/c]
@MellyMel22 She will learn.
inaccessible · 51-55, M
In our Arabic culture we say "the mother is an academy" i as a father can't teach my kids certain things, i tend to go into Thanos mood and get fantasies of breaking necks lol. On the other hand, it's a peice of cake for my wife 🙈
MellyMel22 · F
@inaccessible [c=BF0080]My dad taught me in parking lots at 11! Then told me when I had my permit, if you can master parking this thing everywhere I tell you to(in the Bronx) then you can take it weekends. He forgets she learned in the suburbs b/c that’s where she was raised.. I taught my brother when I was 17 b/c my mom was scaring him the entire time 😂 [/c]
inaccessible · 51-55, M
@MellyMel22
Obviously you have wisdom and your dad has patience 😁
MellyMel22 · F
@inaccessible [c=BF0080]That he did and my mom didn’t 😂 She sat in the back the day I told her to have him pull over and let me teach him b/c all she did was yell thinking he was gonna crash nonstop 😂[/c]
pdockal · 56-60, M
i was driving to the big city on a permit which was illegal @ that time because mom didnt like driving in the big city & never had an issue
but each person is different
so if i had kids it would depend on each kids abilities
MellyMel22 · F
@pdockal [c=BF0080]I agree! This was her first time driving there. I planned on having her do it with her permit b/c I figured if she could drive in the city, she can anywhere and wouldn’t fear anywhere. Then I thought it wasn’t worth the chance of traumatizing her before she had a license 😂

It was illegal for me then with a permit too, but as a teen all I thought was I can drive by myself 😂[/c]
pdockal · 56-60, M
@MellyMel22

it was illegal w/ a permit not issued by the big city I was in .... the suburb kids had to wait for their liscence but ............
now i avoid it because its gotten out of hand

I paid extra money to the driving school to take my boys out to learn extra highway driving and spend extra time with them so I wouldn’t have to do it
MellyMel22 · F
@Jenny1234 [c=BF0080]I had my son’s do that. My daughter had plenty of highway practice with me and my dad. The highway we were on isn’t like the highways here. My mom is nervous on that highway and she’s been driving before I was born. It’s worse in some areas. [/c]
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
For the Cross-Bronz, that traffic is pretty light. Really early in the morning? On a major holiday (like thanksgiving)?
MellyMel22 · F
@thisguy20 [c=BF0080]It was a Friday, late afternoon. I’ve never seen any of 95 not busy when I’m on it. Though I usually take just the hutch back at night. It’s going there which is usually daylight that I end up on 95. [/c]
MellyMel22 · F
@thisguy20 [c=BF0080]I just realized I misread your comment 🤭 I didn’t think it sounded right 😆[/c]
exexec · 61-69, C
Yes. She was a responsible driver. She even drove to the city once because a friend had a flat tire and knew that my daughter could change it for her.
MellyMel22 · F
@exexec [c=BF0080]That was sweet of her! [/c]

I never go anywhere in a car without a baseball bat and knife, I often start road rage innocents I have to be prepared 😌

A professional truck driver I know calls the Cross Bronx Expressway "The Ho Chi Minh trail". Not known for bring a forgiving road.😅
MellyMel22 · F
@ineedadrink [c=BF0080]Sounds pretty accurate! [/c]

I did the same thing when I moved to the big city after graduation...from law school.

I'm 43 and still hate driving
inaccessible · 51-55, M
@DearAmbellina2113
I hated driving right after learning, still hate it now i'm 51. but maybe it's mostly the other drivers attitude that made me hate being on the road
MellyMel22 · F
@DearAmbellina2113 [c=BF0080]Same and same! [/c]

I'm a chill driver. People can speed around me for all I care.

I learned to drive going up and down I-81 about 300 miles each way going to/from college, so major highways have never bothered me.
MellyMel22 · F
@travelguy01 [c=BF0080]That was good practice! [/c]

I had this creepy driving instructor but at least he told me what to do 💪😂

@iamonfire696 [c=BF0080]Agreed lol[/c]
CestManan · 46-50, F
@MellyMel22 She will improve.
Real fun would be something like taking the 270 bypass around St Louis on a dark rainy evening during rush hour traffic like I recently got to enjoy on a recent road trip.
MellyMel22 · F
@CestManan [c=BF0080]That does not sound fun! [/c]

Why in the hell would anyone drive to the Bronx?
MellyMel22 · F
@MethDozer [c=BF0080]That’s my hometown and where most of my friends and fam are 🤨 [/c]
MethDozer · M
@MellyMel22 Driving there though😭
MellyMel22 · F
@MethDozer [c=BF0080]Beats taking metro north for a longer ride and then more trains as well as a walk 🤣

Also, we were picking up my daughter’s car and giving my dad back his. [/c]

MrSmooTh · 31-35, M
@MellyMel22 Did your school have a number or was it named after someone?
MellyMel22 · F
@MrSmooTh [c=BF0080]I think both. P.S. 83 Donald Hertz. K-8. My grade did the very first 7th and 8th grade there after our parents protested to not force us to the JH(127 in castle hill) b/c it was so bad. There were a lot of stabbings and kids caught with guns back then there. [/c]
