How old do you have to be

To hold a full driving licence in your country? Just curious. 17 here. United kingdom.
Top | New | Old
We call it an open here and you have to be at least 20. Learners at 15 and then you have two stages of a provisional license.

@Notladylike Strict. But i suppose it may create better drivers.
@Perry1968 Yes it is strict. It came about because of the number of fatalities involved with newly license drivers. I remember one of my lecturers at uni being part of the research team involved in creating the system.
Perry1968 · M
@Notladylike Thats quite good to a extent. I learned my kids at young ages so they would be competent drivers. Although you do get some parents who hand over the keys of a porshe or something that.ll kill you to a kid at a young age. Thats not a bad law imo where you are.
calicuz · 56-60, M
16 to start driving, but with provisions in the state of Missouri. 18 full drivers license with no restrictions.
SW-User
starts at 15 years to get a permit to learn and graduate to an unrestricted driver’s license by age 18
Elessar · 26-30, M
18 for cars, 16 for 125cc bikes, 14 for 50cc scooters

Or paradoxically you can get an e-bike at any age that is much more dangerous than the 50cc scooter and can easily be modded to go faster than one (stock). Makes sense, right? 🫠
Perry1968 · M
@Elessar Laws are crazy in most countries it seems
SW-User
17 here too, Canada a couple provinces are a little younger.
Perry1968 · M
@SW-User I learned at 10 on farmland here in Devon UK but yeah like your country its 17.
SW-User
@Perry1968 you must have loved that!
Perry1968 · M
@SW-User Oh i really did. I could just go for it once shown. I could drive pretty competently at 12. At 14 i used to drive my brothers 44 tonne truck. Lol. I drove for a living so not so keen anymore.
Applepiedom · 61-69, M
USA 15 if there are good reasons
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Perry1968 hardship license, for example
Perry1968 · M
@iamnikki Ah right. Ive never heard of that.
Applepiedom · 61-69, M
@Perry1968 farming type community,,needed to help family, I forget what all criteria was but yes at 15 you can drive
16 for a driver's permit and 17 for a full license.
Perry1968 · M
@MsSwan Same as here i think. They call it a provisional licence youbcan get at 16. But can only take a full test bike or car at 17. Heavy goods vehicles. (Trucks) 21.

In NY, USA,
16 to get Learners Permit.
After 6 months with permit, you can take test for Junior License.
At 18, your Junior License becomes a Senior License.
IF high school student with learners permit completes the High School Drivers Education Program, they can get their Senior License at 17.
CactusJackManson · 51-55, M
16. But it's up to each state.
Perry1968 · M
@CactusJackManson Its a big country. Here its the same throughout. Its the UK after all. Youve got states bigger than this country lol.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
18 for cars and 16 for motorcycles up to 35kW
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@Perry1968 16 for a full licence and 15 and some months for a learners permit. So 16
Perry1968 · M
@MyNameIsHurl Its crazy here though tbh. You can driver a tractor at 16 unattended and some wiegh around 10 tonnes. More with a trailer and load. Same if you have a full motorcycle licence here you can drive a manual (stick shift) 3 wheeler car thats exactly the same as driving any other car. Most are manual transmission gearboxes here. We live in a wierd country.
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@Perry1968 that is pretty crazy
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
Here in Illinois, earliest seems to be 16
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Most it’s states it’s 16. It typically requires logging a certain number of hours of on the road training before a written test and drivers test. There are some conditional rules for new drivers, but those “laws” are rarely followed to the letter.
SW-User
Still 16 I think
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
16 for a learner's in New Zealand, then restricted for a year. But someone on a restricted can get their full licence in six months if they complete a defensive driving course.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
here to drive alone is 16 years old but if accompanied by an adult even babies are allowed to drive. its good for their brains to learn complex tasks.
pdockal · 56-60, M
18 unless you follow procedures set in place in each state ....

helenS · 36-40, F
18 for cars, and 15 for mopeds I think.
WandererTony · 56-60, M

When I was younger, it was 16. Now it's more like 18. You can get a learner's permit at age 15.
