Not these days. Everything is covered in and specialist IT equipment is needed to diagnose and fix things. I pump the tyres when the car tells me to, put fuel in and top up the screen washer, but can't remember how many years it is since I needed to top up the oil. The car goes in for an annual service, which I am fortunate enough to be able to afford.

Back in the 1980s I would change my own oil & filter, and maybe an occasional set of spark plugs. Plus, I've swapped out the occasional 12v battery and I have changed a few tires over the decades.
bijouxbroussard · F
I used to be able to change a tire, Pop taught his daughters how. But the two times I was doing it, people stopped to help me. Funny, that.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Fortunately, these days I think I look decrepit enough for people to stop and help to change a wheel if I need to. 😂

I ride a motorcycle to get around and I have a female friend who's a licensed mechanic at a motorcycle shop where I take my bike in for scheduled service. I'm a very technically minded person professionally, but that doesn't mean I pull the oil drain plug out myself. She does it for me as I stand there declining invitation to do it while she watches. What I know in the end is if she did it correctly or not.
I can easily tell someone else how to fix a mechanical problem after computer-accessing hidden maintenance manuals which outline how to remove spark plugs in a yacht or a car for example, after I research the answer myself, but researching and 'doing' are two distinctly different skill-sets. Just because I can find the answer, doesn't mean that I actually complete the task at hand.
My father has a mechanic's workshop on his farm, complete with an in-ground hoist and every tool imaginable. He once owned a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker car which he bought at a car auction. He tried for 7 hours straight to change the spark plugs on that 8 cylinder engine and in the end, he could only change 7 out of 8 because the 8th one was inaccessible.
At midnight one night when I was 18 years old, I was able to access the Chrysler tech manuals online on my laptop computer and by 1am an hour later, he had that 8th spark plug removed and replaced. Did I fix the car? No, he did!

Actually yes kinda! The clutch went and luckily it was a cable one, I was far from home so I just pulled on it (I guessed where it was!) And it started working again!!

In the 1960 through 1990 my cars were fully mechanical ones and i enjoyed doing almost all of the maintenance myself.
1490wayb · 56-60, M
i used do a few minor things...today i cant see and have chronic pain so bad and car sits too low to slide under
exexec · 70-79, C
I used to do a lot of work on my trucks, but not since they got so complicated and I got old.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@exexec it isn't that they are more complicated, but they are more computers on wheels.
exexec · 70-79, C
@samueltyler2 I used to be able to sit on it with my feet inside the engine compartment to work on things. That is not possible now.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@exexec in my Polestar there isn't even that possibility! There are a few mechanical parts. Even the suspension is electronic. The brakes are hardly used with one pedal driving.

@LordBarbossa I am sorry to hear that ☹
LordBarbossa · 36-40, T
@Musicman story of my life tbh 🤷 It's one of the reasons I give up if I'm not immediately good at something. Possibly the main reason.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@LordBarbossa When I was in my early teens I really wanted to play the guitar. It took me an entire summer to get my fingers use to making the cords then being able to change them quickly during a song. I'm glad I didn't give up. I really enjoyed playing. Sadly I don't play much anymore.
bowman81 · M
Not so much anymore. Since things went computerized I have it done by people with the right equipment.

All the time, From replacing a simple power steering pump to rebuilding the engine myself in my shed
rinkydinkydoink · M
I've never fixed anything myself. This is why God invented overtime pay so I can hire others to do that :D
Cigarguy · M
Depends. I can change the oil, battery, breaks, tires and do a tune up on most cars myself

With a friend who lent his expertise

Not anymore. I don’t have the patience or the technology.

Now you can't even see the engine under all that stuff....

Wish I could, that’d be a disaster waiting to happen.

@jackrabbit10 I went to change the spark plugs on my six cylinder Mercedes. By the time we moved everything out of the way the whole project took 5 1/2 hours. ☹ A buddy helped me. He is a professional Ford Mechanic and it still took 5 1/2 hours.
jackrabbit10 · M
@Musicman yes I know, don't make cars to repair any more, drive them till they quit, buy another one, I call them throwaway cars,
Musicman · 61-69, M
@jackrabbit10 That is so sad. It also drives up the cost of repairs. They wanted $975 to change the plugs. I was $975 for six plugs! After doing it once I don't think I would do it again. Now on my truck they are super easy. 🙂
