Probably the Ritz in London. I wasn't paying and my grandmother stole stuff because she resented the price. I avoid expensive things and places.

@Riemann The prices might have gone down since then a little . (Something about Amazon?) but I rememeber going in there before and like there was nothing under $5.00. I filled half a bag and it cost me a hundred dollars.
@Penny Several years ago, I spent over $350 in one shopping trip. I've since been shopping at other places - mostly Costco, Trader Joe's and Publix.

Iceland, without a doubt. I'm sorry that I don't remember any specific details; the trip was probably about four years ago.

@Poppies yesss forgot about that . Taxi from Keflavik to town was like 150 bucks . Crazy expensive there.

@Vivaci Reaching back in memory, I believe there was a great restaurant in (?? Seattle or Tacoma) that paved their floor with those big copper pennies. I think it was called the 10-Penny restaurant or something similar.

I have a cigar box that's half full of old coins from various countries. Likely including some of those British pennies. I made a special point of holding on to a few of those old "6 Pence" pieces because of that old "I've got 6 pence, jolly-jollyy 6 pence ..." song we use to sing as kids.

@Heartlander Haha!!! My mom also has this box of old coins…the ones with holes and silver and gold ones too. 😃

Wow…I would love to visit the 10 Penny restaurant…how exclusive that experience must be!

In some of the old English pubs, you’ll find these coins and photos of the post WW on the ceilings…it imparts such a cozy nostalgic ambience to them.

Lovely song…I’ll be listening to it again…thank you for sharing, Heartlander. 💕🤗

My tuppence song would be this…[media=https://youtu.be/S2VVjNvhlms] I think it evolved from two pence?

@Vivaci Rejogging the memory, I believe it may have ben the 13 Coins Restaurant in Seattle, and not 10 Pennies. A quick internet check suggests that a few restaurants ad pubs around the world paved there floor with coins.

The 13 is probably some way connected to the spirit of the 13 Arras that's popular in many Hispanic wedding and/or engagement ceremonies, where the groom (to be) presents the bride (to be) 13 coins, ideally 12 gold and 1 platinum coin. Considering the price of gold coins, the Arras have for many may be in silver coins and even copper pennies. After all, it's the thought that counts :)

Probably London.

@Carissimi

We've come a long, long, long way since ....

Carissimi · F
It was 30-years ago, and it was expensive back then. I’ve been to England since, but not to London, except to fly in and see the airport. England is expensive too. @Heartlander
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Carissimi

Longer for me :)

There were big currency adjustments over the years with big jumps in the 1970s. 1 DM in the 60s was worth 25 cents and a New Franc was worth 20 cents. British pounds at one point was $2.40 US greenback, which made US and UK pennies equal, though you got a much bigger penny in exchange.

US Dollar to Europe's currencies lost at least half its value over the next 10 years. Inflation compounded that.

@Riemann I went there with my cousin. We had hotel reservations, but when we got there my cousin decided the room was way too expensive. She was from Utah, and was used to cheap and reasonable prices.

I still shudder when I think of the hotel she found for the three of us...the Dixie Hotel. It was $110 a night, and the door to the room didn't lock. We had to move a highboy in front of it. I think it was one of those places where prostitutes bring their Johns. SO glad we didn't have a black light.

We didn't go out to eat at all, because we couldn't afford it. Instead we ate hot dogs from street vendors.

@Riemann 🤷‍♀️ People always say it's expensive. I've lived here forever. I know no difference.
Riemann · 31-35, M
@V00doo It's their opinion then. What's yours?
@Riemann Compared to other parts of the UK, yes. Even some other parts of the world. When my 3 bedroom home is valued at the same price of a stately home outside of London. I could buy acres of land and a castle in Scotland if I sold my house. But in other parts of the world itll buy me nothing.
Paris I guess. And even if you only count the monetary cost
Riemann · 31-35, M
@Riemann Well all of Europe is pretty well more expensive than Canada, so that's pretty straight forward. As for non-monetary, I was there w/a friend and things going wrong put a strain on our friendship, and this lead to our permanent enmity
