It was 30-years ago, and it was expensive back then. I’ve been to England since, but not to London, except to fly in and see the airport. England is expensive too. @Heartlander

There were big currency adjustments over the years with big jumps in the 1970s. 1 DM in the 60s was worth 25 cents and a New Franc was worth 20 cents. British pounds at one point was $2.40 US greenback, which made US and UK pennies equal, though you got a much bigger penny in exchange.
US Dollar to Europe's currencies lost at least half its value over the next 10 years. Inflation compounded that.
