Why don’t people say where they’re from on SW?

You'll come across at least once a day someone asking, where you're from? What time zone you're in etc etc. I think you'd find that info if you visit their profile. Besides, most Americans only want to chat with Americans on this site.

Some have had the experience of being bullied by people who have biases against their countries. I’m from the U.S. and very open about it but even I’ve been ragged on because I’m from San Francisco, California, from those who resent its “liberal or progressive” reputation.
So I’ve come to understand why some posters are reticent.

This place is mostly Americans. There are also some people from more exotic countries, like Canada.

In my experience, lots of people mention where they are from in their posts and comments, even mentioning what part of their country they live in, when it is relevant to the topic.

i think i am pretty open about where i am. i won't post my actual address, but my country, my city... it's all there for anyone who is interested.

@DrWatson I chat with quite a few people. Many of them do not have they’re country listed on their profile. Some say world, some hide it. Most will tell you if you ask. My whole post was nothing except asking why it isn’t on everyone’s profile.

Make no secret of the fact I am from Wales...if you search my posts you can even find the town I’m from.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I am from the US as well, outside New York city...I do not mind saying that. Yes, sometimes the US has done some things that i cringe at, but it is a great place to live and has a lot of wonderful people. Right now the US and, I fear, the entire world, are very divided politically...sad...

Some try to be private. Was living on the west coast but now living in the Rockies .

If I have an interest or someone else does, we are bound to ask and learn. I won't be too specific unless I get to know someone better.
And... it has nothing to do with race or anything like it...it has to do with a connection as a friend.

You require a lot out of people.

Because who cares?? It’s not like it matters. Just like first names. Besides, so many just come here to be someone else for a little while, why bring reality into it?

It's not about being ashamed. I want to spare myself the headache of dealing with people with wrong assumptions about culture.

I'm from Wales, it's in the UK but is a more modest country than our English neighbours.

are you talking about country or specifics? i had a nut stalk me, found out where i lived and confirmed it using my daughters obituary. i tell very few people where i am.

Many here including me would not like to disclose their true identity. For that, there is Facebook. Little bits of information, howsoever irrelevant individually, can add up for a curious investigator. Hence the shyness on nationality

I always answer questions on here of where I’m from. I am from the United States 🇺🇸 I’m from Maine. And I’m proud of it .

People are afraid to share much because then it just gives people one more reason to hate.

I have not run across much drama because I mostly get ignored anyways but from what I hear, people hate or argue over the silliest things. So then, people have to be overly cautious of what they share.

Saying you are from the US isn't very precise and doesn't even tell me which time zone you are in. Surely people from Alaska have a different experience of life compared to those who live in Florida and that must have some influence on their politics and behaviour.

I could say I'm European and someone from Cambodia could say that they are Asian, would it mean much to anyone? Would the impression be based on much other than prejudice?

My profile says Sweden, but half the people here still asks where I'm from

maybe sw should make that a choice on the profile, what country are you from.

For me, it's just about being careful on this site. I don't mind sharing my timezone, and I do feel free to ask about another person's timezone without feeling like I'm being creepy.

Good point. I am from South Carolina, USA and not ashamed of it. Why should anyone be ashamed of their location?

There are many posts and polls here asking what country you're from.

Agreed and naming your country does not make you easy to find.

others keep it only at a national level. as there are guys here that will try to track you real world location

I actually think that the approximate time zone should be a compulsory item for the profile so that you at least know roughly when a person's daytime is.

(And then you'd know I'm posting this in the middle of the night 😉)

Naming your country or area of residence on SW doesn't seem to create much risk of being stalked. If you openly use email you've very likely been propositioned already by the lovely but lonely Natasha (or Anastasia); sweet ladies who are interested in 'not just sex' with 'a nice man in your country'. 😅
