Why don’t people say where they’re from on SW?

I am from the US. Sometimes my country does things that I am ashamed of, but I am still American. Knowing where you’re from makes it easier for others in the SW family to communicate with you… to know what additional information you may require, and what time zone you may be in. I am simply referring to the fact that it’s not listed on many profiles. Most people will tell you if you ask.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
You'll come across at least once a day someone asking, where you're from? What time zone you're in etc etc. I think you'd find that info if you visit their profile. Besides, most Americans only want to chat with Americans on this site.
Really · 80-89, M
@Thevy29
I think you'd find that info if you visit their profile.
In many cases that's true. In many cases it is not true at all.

@ReallyI'm in Canada as my profile says; south coastal B.C. Where are you?
Some have had the experience of being bullied by people who have biases against their countries. I’m from the U.S. and very open about it but even I’ve been ragged on because I’m from San Francisco, California, from those who resent its “liberal or progressive” reputation.
So I’ve come to understand why some posters are reticent.
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@bijouxbroussard haters will find something to hate but you don't let them shut you down. 🤗
Fluffybull · F
@bijouxbroussard Exactly. I've seen some very anti-UK posts from some US people and vice-versa. 😥
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard Understandable miss. Used to live in the Bay Area. Now living out of state, two states over
StevetheSleeve · 31-35, M
This place is mostly Americans. There are also some people from more exotic countries, like Canada.
Nuno · Admin
@ninalanyon No, I created it after I saw your request :)
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Nuno But it has posts from as far back as 2016!
Fullmetal · 46-50, M
@StevetheSleeve Canada is exotic? That's awesome man! Thank you!!
DrWatson · 70-79, M
In my experience, lots of people mention where they are from in their posts and comments, even mentioning what part of their country they live in, when it is relevant to the topic.
Fluffybull · F
@Jill1990 🙄
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@DrWatson yes - I have only had one person refuse the tell me when asked.
@DrWatson good writers always say what is neccecssary, it doesn't follow a formula
Yulianna · 22-25, F
i think i am pretty open about where i am. i won't post my actual address, but my country, my city... it's all there for anyone who is interested.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Jill1990 it’s great that you feel so comfortable but don’t expect that from anyone else.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Yulianna I have met one person from SW in 'real life'. I was hoping to go and knock on 'her' door but then omicron came along and the UK government panicked and it's difficult and expensive to travel there just now.
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@ninalanyon i think the UK government has taken sensible steps to avoid another high wave of infections.
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@DrWatson I chat with quite a few people. Many of them do not have they’re country listed on their profile. Some say world, some hide it. Most will tell you if you ask. My whole post was nothing except asking why it isn’t on everyone’s profile.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Jill1990 I understand. Thank you.

@SW-User Exactly. No-one is obliged to let anyone know that more than they're obliged to tell people their age, orientation, etc.
Make no secret of the fact I am from Wales...if you search my posts you can even find the town I’m from.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

There are quite a few of us on here.....have had conversations in Welsh with one.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales Actually, I have not found that most SWers are not evasive at all about where they live. The OP is apparently reacting to that info not being on everyone's profile. I see nothing deep or secretive about that.
@TheSirfurryanimalWales how do you say "sheep shaggers" in Welsh then? Lol
Docdon23 · M
I am from the US as well, outside New York city...I do not mind saying that. Yes, sometimes the US has done some things that i cringe at, but it is a great place to live and has a lot of wonderful people. Right now the US and, I fear, the entire world, are very divided politically...sad...
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@Docdon23 Westchester or Fairfield County?
Docdon23 · M
@Adogslife Connecticut
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@Docdon23 I grew up there. I used to commute into the city ages ago.
Cause they don't want stalked by some of the wierdos on here
SW-User
You are from the U.S. You do realize time zones are different all over? lol

If I have an interest or someone else does, we are bound to ask and learn. I won't be too specific unless I get to know someone better.
And... it has nothing to do with race or anything like it...it has to do with a connection as a friend.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
Some try to be private. Was living on the west coast but now living in the Rockies .
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@oldercanuck1 So right. The one that works for you best
oldercanuck1 · 70-79, M
@bhatjc yes for sure and if i buy second hand that has not to much to get it going ,,,,,
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@oldercanuck1 That is true as well.
CestManan · 46-50, F
People are afraid to share much because then it just gives people one more reason to hate.

I have not run across much drama because I mostly get ignored anyways but from what I hear, people hate or argue over the silliest things. So then, people have to be overly cautious of what they share.
SW-User
You require a lot out of people.
SW-User
privacy concerns obviously
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
It's not about being ashamed. I want to spare myself the headache of dealing with people with wrong assumptions about culture.
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@MarkPaul No, I think about myself and the time I don't want to waste
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@IamCuriousBabe So noted.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@IamCuriousBabe Always good for that.
I'm from Wales, it's in the UK but is a more modest country than our English neighbours.
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@Mindfulness as you should be :)
@Mindfulness You speak Welsh ? That is so cool. 😃
@bijouxbroussard Diolch yn fawr iawn. x
Because who cares?? It’s not like it matters. Just like first names. Besides, so many just come here to be someone else for a little while, why bring reality into it?
Aussieman · 56-60, M
I've never hidden where im from and my user name should give it away and yes sometimes timezones suck
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@Aussieman I know, and thank you.
SW-User
I'm from another planet so it's not listed
Lostpoet · M
@SW-User 😧You seemed so human
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@SW-User closest galaxy them.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
I'm from Brazil
Degbeme · 70-79, M
ExtremeNext · 31-35
@Degbeme what 🤔
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@ExtremeNext Such a lovely country
akindheart · 61-69, F
are you talking about country or specifics? i had a nut stalk me, found out where i lived and confirmed it using my daughters obituary. i tell very few people where i am.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@akindheart That is a stalker
akindheart · 61-69, F
@bhatjc that is a scary stalker
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@akindheart Very true
ExtremeNext · 31-35
I'm from the USA

One very proud Americans here 💪
Really · 80-89, M
Naming your country or area of residence on SW doesn't seem to create much risk of being stalked. If you openly use email you've very likely been propositioned already by the lovely but lonely Natasha (or Anastasia); sweet ladies who are interested in 'not just sex' with 'a nice man in your country'. 😅
WandererTony · 56-60, M
Many here including me would not like to disclose their true identity. For that, there is Facebook. Little bits of information, howsoever irrelevant individually, can add up for a curious investigator. Hence the shyness on nationality
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
I’d rather they know up front. If they have a problem with me being from the US - just let me know and I’ll block them.
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@mysteryespresso I wouldn’t do that. I don’t blame Russian people for the situation today. It’s the leaders that make it happen. I’m sure Russian people are good at heart like most others in the world. It’s not just to dislike people because where they are from.
@Jill1990 not everyone thinks like you. Someone on here was talking about cancelling Russian musicians, avoiding Russian restaurants
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@mysteryespresso people just need an excuse to hate. There is so much of it in the world.
Repete · 61-69, M
I always answer questions on here of where I’m from. I am from the United States 🇺🇸 I’m from Maine. And I’m proud of it .
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@Repete you should be - it’s a beautiful place - rocky shore and a rich sea fearing heritage. My mom went on a windjammer cruise there long before I was born.
Repete · 61-69, M
All the states seem to have their beauty. Not all have oceans but mountains, plains, lakes, or rivers all have their own beauty. Not to mention the people themselves @Jill1990
LarrysReflections · 61-69, M
For me, it's just about being careful on this site. I don't mind sharing my timezone, and I do feel free to ask about another person's timezone without feeling like I'm being creepy.
Dshhh · M
some people are mean , if you say where yo uare from

others keep it only at a national level. as there are guys here that will try to track you real world location
Adogslife · 61-69, M
A lot of great people here from the UK, Canada, Australia. They say where they’re from. They’re not as fragile as most Americans, imho.
Docdon23 · M
@Adogslife And in other countries in Europe...and some India...
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Saying you are from the US isn't very precise and doesn't even tell me which time zone you are in. Surely people from Alaska have a different experience of life compared to those who live in Florida and that must have some influence on their politics and behaviour.

I could say I'm European and someone from Cambodia could say that they are Asian, would it mean much to anyone? Would the impression be based on much other than prejudice?
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@ninalanyon well, the country helps… at least it’s a start.
GuiltyBiStander · 31-35, F
I'm from the future.

The one near the space elevator across from Starbucks .

But I'm just renting.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@GuiltyBiStander With options to buy right
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I know! Maybe they want privacy, but if someone says they are from a big city, they are still anonymous.
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
@JimboSaturn I’m just curious about the country. I dont want specifics.
no big thing,,,the southern state of Tennessee ,,central standard time,,,sun comes up in the east,,sets in the west,,I have coffee in the morning,,Folgers roast blend ,,,I use 1 roll T,P paper month,could be longer,,names is Andy,,live on a hill,,not that hard just ask,,,,,
Really · 80-89, M
@jackrabbit10 Haha; didn't say any of those things, just having fun. Had a good steak last night just like you do; although this one was grass fed - more flavor as well as eco-friendly.
@Really ok just funnying with yea,,,I do have cow and calf,,,,no meds in the beef,,if you look at my profile photo,, that is what i see from my front yard,,
oldercanuck1 · 70-79, M
@Really nice living on this island ,,,i live in the GVA
It gives me leverage for crazy stalking when they wonder where I’m from.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@CrystalSkull Very sweet
SW-User
My profile says Sweden, but half the people here still asks where I'm from
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@SW-User My profile says Norway. But that is where I live, not where I am from. And Marlion isn't obviously Swedish so it sounds reasonable to ask. Anyway, a lot of people don't read profiles, some seem to be averse to the very idea!
Riverman2 · 56-60, M
Good point. I am from South Carolina, USA and not ashamed of it. Why should anyone be ashamed of their location?
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
Well thank you for that :) I don’t get in the writing mood too often but I’ll try.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Jill1990 Always good too vent.
Blueyed · 61-69, M
I think most people here are cautious. There are a lot of crazy people out there.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
maybe sw should make that a choice on the profile, what country are you from.
SW-User
Some people in here are such psychos no one even wants to let anyone know remotely where they really are.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Agreed and naming your country does not make you easy to find.
PinkRose23 · 22-25, F
I honestly didn't think of it but you have a PA girl here.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
There are many posts and polls here asking what country you're from.
Laur0090 · 100+
I will share. I am from the Southeast US
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@Laur0090 Such a sweet southern belle
Mines listed. It’s the greatest place on earth to live as well
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
I've mentioned it numerous times. I try to keep it lowkey, though.
Viper · M
I think it's because most SW users are from the state of confusion
Lostpoet · M
It also makes it easier for people to find you.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
For some reason
No one tells me where they live
