Why don’t people say where they’re from on SW?

I am from the US. Sometimes my country does things that I am ashamed of, but I am still American. Knowing where you’re from makes it easier for others in the SW family to communicate with you… to know what additional information you may require, and what time zone you may be in. I am simply referring to the fact that it’s not listed on many profiles. Most people will tell you if you ask.

i think i am pretty open about where i am. i won't post my actual address, but my country, my city... it's all there for anyone who is interested.

@Yulianna Many are open about it… I don’t understand why everyone isn’t.

@Jill1990 i don't know. i find people are a bit more open in private messages but what difference does it make? we're not going to go knocking on one another's front doors! 😂

or are we?

@Jill1990 have you heard of online stalkers because I have had 2. Thats why people don’t feel comfortable telling everyone exactly where they live.
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@iamonfire696 @stratosranger yes, i understand this and it is exactly why i said we don't give our addresses.

anyway, if someone is going to stalk on line, it doesn't matter where you are.
@Yulianna Yup. I’m in Arizona right now…at least my IP is. 😉

@Yulianna it’s when they really stalk you and find your personal info.
Case in point. I received a text yesterday from a man who works in a oil change shop, inquiring about my former automobile. The shop in question was one I used to get my automobile’s oil changed in. He purchased the car a year ago from the dealer I sold it to, and recently ran the VIN number in the company database, came up with a match and my phone number. Its one of millions of cases of unsecured data that lead back to you. It could be, like in my case, a phone number. In other cases it could be a vulnerability in your computer that a stalker with enough hacking knowledge might be able to exploit. Another example is the vaccine passport. When using a vaccine passport you never know if the venue you wish to access is using proprietary software from the app developer (i.e. NY State) or third party software, which is sharing the information with…who? Bottom line is divulge nothing. There’s already too much about you floating around there already. All an experienced stalker needs to do is connect the dots. @Yulianna @iamonfire696

In my case it is because I am mostly in the closet and don't want people to associate my SW persona with my alter ego until I get to know them well. I suspect that there are quite a few others who hide their precise location for similar reasons.

@Jill1990 it’s great that you feel so comfortable but don’t expect that from anyone else.

@Yulianna I have met one person from SW in 'real life'. I was hoping to go and knock on 'her' door but then omicron came along and the UK government panicked and it's difficult and expensive to travel there just now.

@ninalanyon i think the UK government has taken sensible steps to avoid another high wave of infections.
