If it is piped into the house it is called gas, And yes, that can be confusing because you have to rely on context to know if they are talking about natural gas on petrol gas. If it is bottled natural gas in more rural areas it is called propane, which often is used for barbeques as well.

@JoyfulSilence You and Leroy Jethro Gibbs, eh? ☺️
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@dancingtongue I had to look him up. I never knew that actor's name, LOL!
But I do not know what you are referring to by using his name.

@JoyfulSilence Gibbs has been the main character in the long-running TV series NCIS. He is a former Marine and now lead criminal investigator; rough-edged man's man widower who lives alone and the only cooking he does is grilling steaks in the fireplace.

Natural gas.

@SW-User But actually it's gasoline just shortened to "gas" (obviously), but "gas" is still used for basically any fuel in gas form like natural gas or propane, people will often not specify and just say "gas"

@SW-User Thank you.

Gas
Gas is also something that accumulates in our lower intestines only to be released in elevators
There is also swamp gas
There are lots of gasses for other things, but we use them by name: such as butane or propane for grills, camp torches and cigarette lighters.
There is also diesel, which is not gas. This is how we distinguish what goes in what vehicles.
Standard vehicles get gasoline, which is called gas for short.
Diesel only goes in diesel engines. Getting that wrong makes foe a very bad day.
Considering that both gasoline and diesel are both petroleum and petrol is short for petroleum, do you get confused at the petrol station?

I worked in HVAC recently and all of them just called natural gas "gas". Propane was "gas", too. If no one asks what kind of fuel we're using, it's just "gas". If someone asks, then we specify.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
In the US we call it gas, but sometimes natural gas so as not to confuse it with gasoline (which we also just call gas, mostly).
Silly Americans.

@Spoiledbrat But the liquid used to power vehicles is called Gas.
Spoiledbrat · F
Yes, it is. @Gusman
Spoiledbrat · F
Technically it's called gasoline but most people at least in my experience call it gas for short. @Gusman

In America we have aluminum. Across the pond in Great Britain, they use a Wolverine metal called allymininum. Our car hood is called a bonnet. Our car trunk is called a boot. We say Prius (Pree-us), they say Prius (Pry-us). We call it dentistry, they call it maybe next year…
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Same word, "gas".
We figure out which one the person is referring to by listening to the rest of the sentence. If someone says "We need gas for the car" we assume they're talking about petrol/gasoline. If they say "We need gas for the stove", we assume they're talking about natural gas.

We call it "natural gas", my sister could give you the ins and outs, but she has only began to understand how California effects the economy, being deeply involved like she is.

@checkoutanytime propane is our common terminology
