Do you believe the United States is the greatest country in the world?

No. No country that doesn’t see shelter and healthcare as a right for its citizens can claim that.

@ozgirl512 You will need a shovel to dig your way out that one. Australia has over 100 million sheep. NZ had about 82 million once....down to 27 million now.
@KiwiBird Have tbe NZ sheep moved here!😂

Define "greatest"...

Generally I say no, because we got rid of most, of our manufacturing.

Really the rules and politicians are setting stuff up for the stock market, and the stock market has them wrapped around their fingers. Making the stock market look like the economy.

But in reality, the stock market is not the economy and the stock market doesn't necessarily help main street.

We're not taking care of main street nearly enough.

And really America's biggest asset is their buying power, and Wall Street has convince most of the politicians, that it's bad to for the government to use America's buying power to help the government.

So American isn't even smart enough to use their best assets, as they're too busy appeasing Wall Street.

@KiwiBird Honestly, I don't think I fully understand that concept, and when I've heard people explain it, I've heard some very different answers.

Some of which, I fully agreed with, others I fully disagree with, so I don't like using that phase, as I think it means extremely different things to different people, and I don't have a definition of it for myself.

But my general answer, would be, it's Green$$$Privilege... as if you got green, your in, if you don't got green, your out.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@Viper The lines are blurring....I guess in the past White Privilege was synonymous with Financial Success. The divide between haves and have nots is definitely increasing.
Viper · M
@KiwiBird As my dad would point out, he's seen a hell lot of broke white people!

As he came from an extremely poor often completele forgotten about area...

While there are a lot of poor minorities in the city, that get some government help (can argue that's it's not enough, but it's at least some), and get heavier media coverage and asking why aren't they being treated fairly.

But there is a heck lot of poor white people (and minorities too, but mostly white it seems) in the rural countryside that get almost no government help (as most goes towards the cities) and they basically get no media coverage what so ever, unless they're out raged and sayin' some crazy sh!t.

White Privilege is synonymous with Financial Success.

But the concept of white privilege, to a certain degree ignores the whites that are struggling in different ways just as other races are.

The huge difference in the poor and race is poor minorities seem to be in the cities, while poor whites are in the countryside...

And just to be clear, there is racist and how people treat the races differently, I'm not arguing that isn't real.... as it very very much is real!

BUT... some (not all, some) of the things people are claiming are based on race, in my opinion are more based on the green in your pocket than color of your skin.

On a range of measures, including Human Development Index, I would suggest Norway is.

USA is a great country in many ways. But it's lost its ability to have rational conversations - the basis of democracy - and lost a good deal of its humanity.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Now the poor and homeless are despised mercilessly and the storied pomp of the billionaires is celebrated. "Send these"? The Wall is now the symbol of America for many, not the statue of liberty.

(My country is sliding down the same path, as is any nation where Murdoch controls the message and the ultra-right are in power.)

I wouldn't rank it in the top ten.

Yes, I was born here.
Quetzalcoatlus · 46-50, M
Greatest at what?
The healthcare system is the obvious standout area where the US fails badly but looking at various quality of life indices, it’s far from being the greatest in plenty of respects, not just because of healthcare.

Damn sure is

I used to think that because that’s what they teach you and pressure you to think, like you’re a bad person if you don’t believe it, but not anymore. Maybe we were the greatest not too long ago, but our middle class has died.
