Ear piercing of babies. Right or wrong. Your opinion ... ?

[image deleted]
Good god.. they will want to be killing them next.. oh wait... 😏

At some point you need to think... 🤔

Is this for me? or the baby?...
SW-User
@User41 it's never for the baby.
Nimbus · M
@User41 Excellent!
Danez · M
I remember when my first daughter was a baby, she was so perfect. And then at about 6 months old my wife and sister-in-Law took her to get her ears pierced without telling me. At first I was pissed but then I realized that she was still perfect to me. And she did look cute with a tiny little pierced ears.
Nimbus · M
@Danez I can understand that.
Fernie · F
@Danez you had every right to be pissed at both of them!
Danez · M
@Fernie damn straight!!
4meAndyou · F
Babies tend to grab things and tug on them. I would hate to see a baby rip her own earrings out of her ears by accident. Even worse, I would hate to see an earring unfasten itself, and the baby swallow it.

That being said, it is a tradition in some cultures to pierce the ears of girl babies so they can wear (usually very tiny) studs.
Nimbus · M
@4meAndyou Good summary....as always :)

@Nimbus ❤️
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
Wrong. Let them decide when they are older
Nimbus · M
@Scubaguy027 Exactly.
gummybears · F
No, they don’t need it
Nimbus · M
@gummybears I think it's a bit too young too.
gummybears · F
@Nimbus very young..
I was 3 when I got my ears pierced
And think I was too young
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I think it's treating the baby as a possession rather than a human ... Wait till the child is old enough to decide
Nimbus · M
@ozgirl512 Good point.
It's ridiculous!
Nimbus · M
@EugenieLaBorgia I don't like to see it but each to his or her own I guess.
@Nimbus If anyone wants to dry their babies after washing the they should use a towel. Hanging them from a washing line with those piercings is not the thing to do!
Nimbus · M
Thodsis · 51-55, M
Wrong. Both morally and aesthetically.
Nimbus · M
@Thodsis I agree!
give them thug tattoos on their faces too
Nimbus · M
GlitterBug · 22-25, F
I'm against it. As you get older your ears grow slightly. An adult who had their ears pierced as babies will have piercings that are not centered like they should be. Also the baby doesn't get to choose and that's something they should be able to decide. It's cute but no.
Nimbus · M
@GlitterBug I never thought of that.
Good point.
SW-User
Wrong as they can’t consent plus they could pull it out or get it infected as babies don’t understand how to look after it or why it’s there. Their parents can’t be watching or looking after their ear 24/7
SW-User
@SW-User Yes....this answer is correct.
Nimbus · M
@SW-User Good point but what is your view re male circumcision?
Isn't that a similar situation?
SW-User
@Nimbus Good point
SweetMae · 70-79, F
It might be easier to get that done as a baby but I would have concerns about hoops. Tiny fingers can get caught in there and maybe even pull them out.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@hippyjoe1955 Hopefully that is true. My granddaughters all had them too.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@SweetMae Yeah like I said I see it very often. Almost like little boys being circumcised little girls get earrings.
Nimbus · M
@SweetMae Good point!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I wouldn’t do it. But when my daughter was 3 years old she saw a baby that had pierced ears and she became obsessed with getting her ears pierced. I told her every day she was too little and she would say if a baby could do it then she was old enough. So for her 4th birthday I got her ears pierced. Took her to the mall to the earring place and they sat her up on a stool and two women did the piercing at the same time...she left out a scream and her ears turned bright red and stayed red the rest of the afternoon. I had to take her and buy her some ice cream to distract her and stop the sniffling. But she was proud of those earrings for a long time. I can’t imagine why people want babies ears pierced.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti Awwww, it's amazing what an ice cream can do :)
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
She was kind of snubbing back whimpers when she was eating it though, lol.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
I don't think it looks good on a young baby , but that's my opinion , but we have no right to have a go at parents , if they do it, not our buissnes, more to worry about then ear piercing, asking as the baby is not abused and well loved that is all that matters
Nimbus · M
@Nyloncapes We share opinions.......again :)
MissMoon · 26-30, F
Wrong, piercings should only be done when the person has the ability to agree to it in my opinion. I got my first piercings at around 15, and by then I was able to say that I wanted one and I was aware of the risks of getting it done.
Nimbus · M
@MissMoon I agree.

Mid teens is a good age.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
It's not permanent, however many infections are caused by piercings and it would be preferable for babies to not be exposed to risks like that.
Nimbus · M
@HannibalAteMeOut Excellent point.
shuhak · M
That all depends on whether you're going to hang the kid from your car's mirror (like fuzzy dice) or attach a wire and use it as a handle.
Nimbus · M
@shuhak lol, I prefer a Christmas tree ;)
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
We didn't do it to our children but around here it is a very very common practice to have it done to baby girls
Nimbus · M
@hippyjoe1955 Same here and it is very common but I still feel uneasy when I see it.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Nimbus I have seen some babies with bad infections or reactions to the rings so yeah I agree.
Indy74 · 46-50, F
When they get older, the child should decide.
@Indy74 Quite right, Mrs.Indie and if anyone wants holes in their head later, they can just walk down a street in Beirut!
Indy74 · 46-50, F
@EugenieLaBorgia lmao!! You got that right!! 😂😂
Nimbus · M
@Indy74 I try :)
pentacorn · F
i wouldn’t do it. broken skin is an unnecessary risk in a child with an undeveloped immune system.
Nimbus · M
@pentacorn Agreed,
Magenta · F
Wrong. That should be their personal choice when they come of age. I don't even have my own pierced.
Nimbus · M
@Magenta Yes, mid teens is a good age.
I had it done when I was a baby, I'm grateful, I hate pain and not remembering, great thing for me...
Nimbus · M
@Somewhereovertherainbow That's a good point.
My mama did that to meeee!!!! Lol
Nimbus · M
@Dewms 😛 👍️
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Dewms @Nimbus That's debatable, lol 😋
Nimbus · M
@Quizzical 😮 :)
BlueRain · F
I think it’s wrong. It’s up to the child when they can make their own decision.
Nimbus · M
@BlueRain Yes, about 15.
There is no rush!
BlueRain · F
Exactly!
SW-User
They don't remember it and heal rapidly quickly ._.
I honestly don't see the problem with things like circumcision and ear piercings. Maybe ear piercings can be viewed as completely pointless tbh 🤔
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SW-User It's the same in principle though.
SW-User
@Quizzical theory and practice :v
I get what ya mean but in theory, but the story differs in intensity and aftermath
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SW-User Well, not regarding circumcision it doesn't...
ArianaRose25 · 26-30
Wrong. Should be done when they are older.
Nimbus · M
@ArianaRose25 K

At what age?
ArianaRose25 · 26-30
@Nimbus Typically when they are old enough to decide they want it, somewhere in their teens.
Nimbus · M
@ArianaRose25 Good age, knows reasoning.
Sroonaka616 · 31-35, M
Wrong. I think that it should be about 15 years old with the parents consent.
Nimbus · M
@Sroonaka616 THat seems reasonable.
SW-User
Wrong. They should be old enough to decide.
Nimbus · M
@SW-User Exactly.

What next, tattoos? :)
SW-User
@Nimbus 🙂
Danez · M
Ears are ok I think. Anywhere else is maybe not so good.
Nimbus · M
@Danez Fair enough.
RumorHasIt · F
I wouldn’t but if others do that’s their business
Nimbus · M
@RumorHasIt Exactly.
Fernie · F
It's cultural for many but I couldn't do it
Nimbus · M
@Fernie Good point.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
I dont really have any strong feelings either way.. I'd worry if the hoops were too big they might catch them and rip their ear.. but i am guessing it's fairly rare... I would think, given a choice its still better to wait until they can consent..
Nimbus · M
@Adaydreambeliever I agree.

Mid teens is a good age and many decisions like that are on the horizon and will soon have to be faced.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@Nimbus @Nimbus I think my daughter was 8.. and she asked for it to be done.. I dont think she ever regretted it... she was old enough to understand how to look after them while they healed
Nimbus · M
@beastmaster I agree.
beastmaster · 46-50, M
@Nimbus They cannot keep wearing the earrings all the time and once you take them out, the ear holes will close and you have to re-pierce thhem !!!
I'm indifferent towards it. Personally I'm going to wait until my daughter is old enough to decide for herself but that's just me, I don't have a problem with babies who have pierced ears.
Nimbus · M
@GreenGoddess That's sensible.
nowic2 · 61-69, M
It seems to me that, at least in the western world, it's done for the parents satisfaction. Certainly not the childs. So I'm opposed to it.
Nimbus · M
@nowic2 I agree.
Dusty101 · F
In Spain it is done.
In Ireland not so much.
My child is 10 and her ears are not pierced yet.
Nimbus · M
@Dusty101 At what age do you think it will be OK?
Dusty101 · F
@Nimbus when Amelia is around 16.
I really don't like seeing kids with earrings.
She's not bothered.
I got mine pierced when I was 18.
Nimbus · M
@Dusty101 Reasonable age.
MysteryGirl · 22-25, F
Got mine done dont remember it but idk if I could give my future children piercings
Nimbus · M
@MysteryGirl I couldn't.
MysteryGirl · 22-25, F
Ironically I'm getting any future sons circumcised 🤷‍♀️
Cavedweller · 46-50, F
@MysteryGirl Was talking to a midwife friend of mine about circumcision; it was her job to hold the screaming infant down while they cut him. A negative experience for all concerned. Kinda like declawing a cat.

@SW-User I appreciate your honesty.
SW-User
I had my daughter pierced when she was 3 years old.
Nimbus · M
@SW-User Would you be OK with a boy having that at that age?
SW-User
@Nimbus yes
Nimbus · M
👍️
Wrong.

Not only abusive but dangerous as well.
Nimbus · M
@Underconstruction I think so.
There's simply no need for it.
@Nimbus I agree.
PoizonApple · 41-45, F
Ehhh Im not for it but Im not about to chastise those who are
Nimbus · M
@PoizonApple I agree.
Not for me but ..........
Quizzical · 46-50, M
Totally wrong
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Nimbus Not when it involves damaging a child for reasons of fashion...
Nimbus · M
@Quizzical Mmmmmmh, now you have me thinking :)
