Define the line btwn "tough love" and child abuse?

Top | New | Old
kodiac · 22-25, M
I don't think there is a line . Tough love is just an excuse abusers use.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@foldedunfolding Agree 100% when hell becomes normal you never see the other side
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@kodiac for hell to TRULY fulfill its purpose, it must feel endless and like there is NO purpose.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@foldedunfolding And it feels normal .
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Tough love means loving your child by teaching them boundaries.

But abuse is when someone excuse punishment for boundaries.

Example: Saying no to your 12y child when they wanna go to a concert, is tough love.

Physically hurt your 12y child when they were caught drinking alcohol is punishment and abuse.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Queendragonfly veryyy well spoken, yes!!!!
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I would say an example of tough love would be to tell an adult child who is a drug addict that they cannot move back in with you unless they go for treatment. Tough love means not enabling unhealthy behaviors.

For a child, it might mean "no television until we see your next report card. Start doing your homework and get your grades up." (And only if the child is actually a bright student, and they have gotten poor grades because they have blown things off, not because they are genuinely struggling with school.)

Child abuse is nothing at all like that.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@foldedunfolding That all sounds very healthy! 👍
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@DrWatson i think the biggest healers for me have been writing..telling my story..helping other people out of it..and plugging in with God..i am chock full of sin tho..
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@foldedunfolding I am chock full of sin also. And that is why plugging in with God is such a powerful thing!
SUPERVlXEN · F
If one needs to call it tough love it’s no longer love.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@SUPERVlXEN ooo definitely something to ponder
Matt85 · 36-40, M
I don't believe in smacking.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Matt85 i dont either.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Sometimes 'tough love' is implementing a healthy boundary, sometimes it's not meeting another party with empathy, patience and compassion. I'd say if there's any level of intentional neglect, vindictiveness or retribution motives then it is likely abuse.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Starcrossed well friggin said. if you are super angry during implementation..you may tontake a beat and examine.
Straylight · 31-35, F
I’m not a parent, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But I’d say if you’re doing it because you’re angry, it’s not a good look.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Straylight yep agreed..and i dont care if you're a parent..i care if you were ever a child
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
How the child is affected.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@CountScrofula yes..i think kids need to be handled diff ways. you know that you know the difference btwn crying over a consequence vs. crying due to a BROKENNESS.
Prisoner1972 · 51-55, M
Sometimes there's a thin line between tough love and child abuse.

Because his parents abandoned him to live in the shed, Bubbles from TPB was definitely a victim of child abuse. That broke my heart.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Prisoner1972 lmao..similar to a court case in the news right now: the adoptive parents who created a box to hold their teen, locked from the outside, bucket for restroom
Prisoner1972 · 51-55, M
@foldedunfolding limiting a kid's cell phone use is tough love. Locking a kid in a box is abuse.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@Prisoner1972 agreed.

@Lostpoet thats the thing, with Pop, he wouldn't remind you twice. That second time he knocked me so far i thought he was sending me to astronaut school.
And to this day i still have to use levity when i discuss it to keep from breaking down about it. Hmm 😒 well thanks folks i needed to get that out.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F

Punishment is not supposed to cause harm but to teach. The child should still be able to come to you as a parent for their needs. If you find a child avoiding you, you're doing it wrong.

Asian parents left the chat
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@SW-User aw im sorry you have struggled. i have also encountered many black people who think being slapped in the face is entirely normal! and white parents like mine, who turned off water and sent me to bed sudsy from a shower..made me sleep outside..grounded me from food..tried to sell my cat when i was an adult..stole my car and my brothers when i was an adult and my brother was a teen..sent me to a homeless shelter, etc etc etc
SW-User
@foldedunfolding im sorry you had to go through all that, I wish parents understood the concept of empaty and gentleness..
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@SW-User aw thanks..one of the worst parts was ACTUALLY that i lacked the bruises to prove it

No physical abuse and you don’t demean your child.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
https://voca.ro/1dSNMWckBHce he actually stitched my comment SO THAT his followers would come for me..not narcissistic at all
brain163 · 61-69, M
@foldedunfolding Yeah.....................none of that has anything to do with 'tough love' - that's just stupid, narcissistic and cruel behaviour. Some people should be never be allowed to breed............... 😡
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@foldedunfolding I saw that one where the woman cut her daughter’s hair off. It was terrible and so abusive.

You’re right about the parents who take pleasure in hurting their children that way. It’s not for views in that case.
was routinedly mindfucked since 7 by my father (who died in 2002), physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and was a prick to the moment of his deathbed
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@legalboxers same..it was merely the invisible jeffrey dahmer of my skin-covered skull
