I would say an example of tough love would be to tell an adult child who is a drug addict that they cannot move back in with you unless they go for treatment. Tough love means not enabling unhealthy behaviors.

For a child, it might mean "no television until we see your next report card. Start doing your homework and get your grades up." (And only if the child is actually a bright student, and they have gotten poor grades because they have blown things off, not because they are genuinely struggling with school.)

Child abuse is nothing at all like that.

@DrWatson i am getting such PERFECT answers to this..and realizing further that i have not been crazy this whole time.

@foldedunfolding What had led you to think you were crazy, or to doubt your thoughts?

@DrWatson my mom's presence in the community..she was a "pillar", and i was her scapegoat..she campaigned against me, and had me believing i was the problem at times.

@foldedunfolding That is not love, tough or otherwise. I am very sorry you had to endure that from your own mother.

You are not the problem!

@DrWatson aww thank you so much..i so wish i had this kind of support when i was a little girl, broken and navigating this alone

@foldedunfolding Sadly, I know of two families where girls grew up being emotionally abused by one or both parents. In one case, the father is in prison now. In the other, my friend decided as an adult to cut off all connections with her parents. But in both cases, the good news is that the victims have grown in understanding of what happened, grown in self-awareness and self-confidence, and are on the road to healing. I pray that the same will be true for you.

@DrWatson i think the biggest healers for me have been writing..telling my story..helping other people out of it..and plugging in with God..i am chock full of sin tho..

@foldedunfolding I am chock full of sin also. And that is why plugging in with God is such a powerful thing!
