Why does it have to be either/or? Because this is a digital age rather than one where messages can be reinforced, and people work in tandem?
Chiefjustice · 46-50, M
@dancingtongue it should be both. Because it is no longer a village to to raise a child.. it is now internet, our politicians who we put in the office. The influencers for the most part.

Whatever happened to basic decency ?
Be respectful of anyone...EVERYONE.
Much as I hate to say it i suspect a lot of family problems are due to the fact that there's no primary caregiver role in families these days.
Parents have been told to get out into the world of work and stop being a burden on 'government resources'.
Only, they're not 'government resources'
They're 'family resources'.
When you let government define the roles your society plays, THAT'S when you get the mess you have now !
That's another important distinction.
Children were once a sign of joy.
A being raised with love, ethics and morals developing their own sense of ideals over time.
Mum or Dad was able to stay home and care for their children while the other went out to work.
They earned a livable wage that took care of living expenses and enabled modest savings for running a car or trips and holidays etc
Can you honestly say the same is true today ?
If Parents aren't home to raise their children and communities like church or temple get ever more extreme in their OWN doctrine rather than being there for the community, who's raising your children ?

@Picklebobble2 Very good and valid points, although i would beg to differ as some people who are unfit to be parent or teachers they have to be told how to. Although i do not like how some crazy and radical politicians come along and change how parents should be parenting.. what moral and ethical values should be taught etc.

@ScreamingFox Yes, absolutely!!
You are absolutely right, some of the older generation has displayed disrespectful, authoritarian and abusive behavior towards young generation.

There can be numerous reasons for what you see as a child's disrespectful behavior and misbehaving. They learn from the world around them.
I know a lot of adults that act like "grown" children and have very disrespectful behaviors... and some of them are parents, grandparents, and even teachers. Many adults can't control their own behaviors, let alone be a role model to children; it runs rampant in our world and is easily accessible to kids.
So, it is an interesting question... who is willing, and I might add, capable, to teach them how to behave? We value teaching kids how to read, how to write, how to do math... do we also value to teach them social emotional skills on how to behave and emotionally regulate, or do we just discipline them? Do most adults even know how to do this?
Sometimes it's a teacher with a child from an abusive home, other times it's a caring parent with a child who is bullied at school... any person in a child's life has the impact to either help or hurt.

@StarLily Very true, and also agree with you here, all the valid points.
Unfortunately character building has been left to NO BODY or rather internet.
And are you said, terrible role models as well incapable adults. Thanks!

Parents 💯
Ann99 · 41-45, F
I think it’s both parents and school. Basic values come from home, and school helps shape them Every generation is different but respect is always important.
Chiefjustice · 46-50, M
@Ann99 I think so too, agree here.

Parents should teach their kids, its their responsibility.
If my kid was to be disrespectful in public, I as a parent would be ashamed.
Schools are for aquiring and learning knowledge academically, Period.

@eyeno lol lol I wont be spanking like that for sure. I think character building should be part of school system education. how can we separate them while trying to prepare them for real life?
I will be ashamed too. Thank God, my kids have been very good. They understood their limits/boundaries well in advance.

The saddest part of this question is that it has to.
In an ideal world it would be modeled by others for children to absorb and imitate.

@OogieBoogie Someone has to, well have a play in it, when people wash their hands this is when things go wrong.

@Chiefjustice the shitty thing is, many people have lost their rights to enforce same the behavior in thier kids.
Kids are learning off tiktok and other such places.
They have learnt their rights and now, not only speak up about them, but have learnt to use them against everyone.
I work in a high school, and this gen A that's coming thru is a different breed. They don't care about learning. They just want to do what ever they like.
Show them respect, all good, but they rarely think to give it back. They demand it, no matter what they choose to do.
They dont see how anything is their responsibility - even basic respect.
I watch the teachers try their hardest, but they are bound by that many rules - the kids know they can't do anything.
The parents are scared coz they get threatened by the kids that if they try to enforce anything - the kid will call child services.
I never thought id say it, but this soflty softly approach has led us into a place where all the responsible adults are scared of the kids.
Kids now rule.
And they see every adult as a threat they need to overcome.
They are constantly bored, deny anything the teachers try and teach and they don't give a shit - about anything except their phones and their shoes.
Their lives are so soft - and we made it that way .
The world is going to break in thr next decade or two as these kids grow into adults and won't be able to adult.
