Of course
Step one is to look around and everyone else and see yourself
Stop thinking “that could never be me. I would never let myself get in that position. That would never happen to me”
See yourself in the face of everyone around you all the time

@samueltyler2 People don’t take the negative position of that at all. So it’s also BS

@EBSVC what?
EBSVC · 36-40, T
@samueltyler2 They’re to comfortable settling into doing nothing and pretending that absolves them of blame
“Well I didn’t do anything to them”
That’s why empathy is so important
Walking blindly past a homeless person is as much of a moral failure as putting them out in the street

Honestly, I’m not sure. There is someone I know who I believe has mild Asperger’s. He’s not an unkind person, and if you point something out like how certain words or actions would affect him if he were on the receiving end, then he understands. But such things don’t occur to him otherwise. He’s family and I love him dearly. But it’s an aspect of his personality that has never changed.

I believe every human being has the capacity to create. Love is product of creation and empathy a product of love. So yes… in a way. I wouldn’t call it learning as this is an innate ability we all inherently have. More like… rediscovering.
If they truly lack empathy then I don’t think so, this tends to manifest as things like antisocial personality disorder or what in popular culture people refer to as sociopaths. If memory serves me correctly I think there are measurable differences in brain activity.

@Notladylike like everything else there is nature v nature. Some people are unable to show empathy or even any emotional connection.
SlippingAway · 46-50, F
They may be able to mimic it, but if they truly lack empathy they will never feel it. Just my thoughts on that.

@SlippingAway Sadly, I think you’re correct. 🥺

@SlippingAway Agreed for sure.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Probably not imho.
I think people mistake sympathy for empathy. I’m fairly sympathetic but I’m not very good at empathy. I’d even go as far as saying the average male isn’t very empathetic.

In my experience and opinion, no. I think you need to be born with it. I have tried.
That being said, I would rather be a "sociopath" a ,"psychopath", or a "narcissist" 🙄
than be what we predominately have out there today. Phony REQUIRED empathy and positivity.

i think compassion is more essential than empathy

@EBSVC how so? in school i had to do a report on a study about how just relying on empathy can cause us to inadvertently give preferential treatment to someone we empathize. i am not sure the exact study, but it looks similar to this article:

I don't really know? I think it would be extremely hard they might be able to fake it a little bit.

They can learn through practice
tobynshorty · 51-55, F
I don’t think so. They can also be murderous
Wiseacre · F
No, they have a different brain map.

It would take quite a transformation, which is possible, but unlikely.
