I never realized while it was playing

That the SNL skit, The Chruch Lady was in response to the silliness of the Satanic Panic.

I think I wasn't really aware of the panic when it was happening.

I remember my friend that I went to church with telling me that we shouldn't use Proctor & Gamble products because they worship Satan. I think I was 9 at the time.

I remember going to see Mike Warnke perform. I thought as a comedian he was funny, but I never really associated him with any panic.

I look back now and realize the panic was all around me, yet I was oblivious to it. Lol

That’s been a common theme forever it seems. I remember the late 60’s when the nuns had a 6 inch ruler to keep couples spaced at dances. Then with the “British Invasion” of music and the long hair making boys look feminine. After that it was playing LP’s backward for Satanic messages. We also had the “Moral Majority” because Satin was attacking the youth with free love and commie ideas.
The Church Lady was not only mocking the Satanic Crisis but also the fall of televangelists like Jerry Falwell and Jim Baker. SNL is good at holding up a mirror to hypocrisy.

@SageWanderer We Americans love our made up moral panics.

My stepmother was all to happy to jump on that wagon. Especially the Dungeons & Dragons, which we just played at somebody else's house.

@FoxyQueen I know of Gurps more than the HERO stuff, but I have never tried either.

The only other system we played regularly was the White Wolf/World of Darkness stuff.

@Levenrack I started TTRPG with The Lord of the Rings RPG and the ICE heros system. Then I played Gurps, which was fine since it was set up a lot like Champions. Then I got into EarthDawn, which was kind of a confusing system.

I made characters for the White Wolf system, but never actually played.

I also played a very little of ShadowRun which was also a lot of fun, but hard to play at times because of the occupations. If you were a hacker, you really didn't get much play because it left the majority of the rest of the party out.

@FoxyQueen I played a Shadowrun one-shot at Gen Con, when it was still in Milwaukee. I wasn't impressed with it and I know exactly what you're referring to with the Decker.
I vaguely remember it. I was young.
two of the more memorable episodes for me were the one with Pat Robertson (Al Franken) and Jimmy Swaggart (Phil Hartman) as guests ...

... and then the one with Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker as guests

They said the rock band Rush was Ruled Under Satans Hand. Lots of musicians were accused at the time

@AthrillatheHunt Now that you mention it, I do remember that too! Isn't that silly! A lot of the hair bands were tossed under the Satan Bus, for literally no reason. "Come Sail Away" is such a terrifying song about controlling your future to create better times.🙄
