I don't like them. Sometimes they work well and then other times they beep and have issues and you didn't even do anything lol. I've had two employees at a specific grocery store ask me on separate days, "do you want to use self help?" (so I would not have to wait on line) and I was like No thanks. Lol
@Coralmist and if you mess up they secretly judge you

I hate them. Ive had good experiences with them and bad experiences with them. Never had a bad experience with a cashier. They are there so the company doesnt have to hire as many employees...saving money which means higher profits. ....it also means people lose jobs. Obviously, the company is not going to simply move the person that was a cashier to another position ....that defeats the whole purpose of saving money by not hiring someone. Are there other reasons a company may want them? Sure but they still cost jobs for people (no, I am not one of them that lost a job...simply one that can see it).
We had one grocery store chain completely replace every human cashier with self checkout stations at every location they had...quite a few.....again a lot of jobs lost (no discount given for the work I now need to do nor for all the money the company saved). I stopped using that store and went somewhere else. Apparently, a lot of others did the same. The chain must have seen the drop in sales....6 months later they had put humans back in.....but using the same self checkout staions. Now you have the cashier standing next to you using the self checkout rather than being across from you at their register. Its a bit odd, but at least people are working again.
I can see a store offering a couple self checkouts for those with just a few items so they can get in/ out quickly. Just give us the option.
Thats my 5 cents.

@PHlover19701 we still have cashier option, but may end soon.

Great for small collection of items. But I’ll take quick check any day over deep lines with full carts. Then there’s always someone wanting to spend 5 minutes arguing over a coupon. I have little patience at grocery stores. But that’s my problem lol.
bowman81 · M
I hate them. They do have the advantage of cutting down on the wait for a cashier. I won't use them at the supermarket. I am lost trying to look up the codes and whatnot for produce.
NoGamesTolerated · F
@bowman81 I hate them too. Be sure many people are stealing using them and they also put people out of jobs.
Wiseacre · F
@NoGamesTolerated we have cashiers watching customers.
I prefer to do it myself. I can pack my bags how I like and I don't have to hear a speech.

I like them. I feel like when other people bag my groceries they take too long and dont double bag.
Elessar · 26-30, M
They're good if you have a few items, but it bugs the hell out of me that you need to be "authorized" in order to purchase alcohol, and the guy often is nowhere to be found, so you have to stay still idly near this yelling machine with a beep that makes you sound like a thief, or a kid waiting for his parents permission to buy a beer
Let me scan my beard and spare me from the embarrassment ffs

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Elessar A couple of years back a cashier asked me for proof of age to purchase alcohol, which I did not have on me. She called her supervisor, but because the request had been made, they could not serve me. I was 37 years old 🤷♀
Elessar · 26-30, M
@SunshineGirl Meanwhile human cashiers wouldn't bother checking my ID when I bought beer at 15 😏
noexpectations1 · 41-45, M
I like! Im responsible for my own destiny
Wiseacre · F
@noexpectations1 one way to see it.
pdockal · 56-60, M
I only use them when i don't have a choice
We should get 25% discount for using them otherwise they need to go away.

I like 'em. I usually get out faster that way and I don't have to interact with people as much.
Wiseacre · F
@SarahAndSamantha I like the human contact
SarahAndSamantha · 51-55, T
@Wiseacre I do too, to a degree. The main self checkout I use is at walmart, and by the time I get to checkout, I'm frustrated and getting human claustrophobic, so I need as little as possible

Diotrephes · 70-79, M
You should get at least a 10% discount on your purchase for using a self-help checkout.
candycane · 36-40, F
@Diotrephes i said same thing
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I make a point of waiting in line for a cashier, in order to make a statement.
NoGamesTolerated · F
@DrWatson same

I used to hate them with a purple passion, but then I started using them and I use them now more than I go to a manned checkout counter.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Mostly indifferent, but I do prefer a mann'ed checkout. Or Womann'ed it doesn't matter.
@CestManan I think all service people should be women really.
Even women prefer to interact with women it seems.

I like them in one shop I often go to and hate pretty much everywhere else.
It depends on the type of cashier I'm dealing with
SatanBurger · 36-40, FVIP
I think it's good for stealing some things you don't wanna pay for
Wiseacre · F

MasterLee · 56-60, M
Avoid. They pay people to do that.
NoGamesTolerated · F
@MasterLee That’s what they are trying to eliminate as much as possible. I usually refuse them when someone directs me to use them.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M

@HobNoblin When people feel like they are getting screwed in every orifice they have, there is a tendency to say "h3ll with it, if this is how it is going to be..."
I mean yeah people CAN try to cut back on spending in several ways but resources and personal sacrifice can only stretch so far.
I think one big part is that companies shareholders expect to see this "infinite growth" but that is not sustainable. I think shareholders are the biggest reason that companies KEEP cutting back quality and quantity (where possible) meanwhile jacking up prices.
