Everyone uses any system/platform for their benefit(as they think). Some use for entertainment, some for information, some for time pass, some to earn money, some for sharing, etc. Some know how it is also affecting in the way they didn't want to. Yes, it also effecting their concentration abilities and way of socializing.
You can blame the platform, or go manage yourself, because it's your life.

No. Not in the US.
But even states like Montana have passed, or are considering laws that limit access by minors - which is reasonable considering how easily they're manipulated by tracking algorythms used by ruthless tech developers.
But the harm done to adult platform users is just as bad. Personal privacy, human dignity, and reliable information are compromised every day to put more money into the pockets of a few greedy billionares.
Social media and the internet as a whole needs to be regulated like a public utility.

True.
Lots of kids (and adults with bad intentions) are using VPNs to avoid age restrictions and "censorship" that's meant to control fraud and disinformation. BUT what few ordinary internet users know is that technology already exists that allows almost every platform developer to spot VPNs, and block their access if they choose.
But they choose that strategy only if suspicious VPN access costs them money. Take streaming services like Hulu for example. VPN hackers cost Hulu millions in lost subscription fees, so they got busy :
So when Zuckerberg, Musk, or Pichai go up in front of government regulators and claim there's no way to enforce rules and control access on the web - it's a lie. They can and they will, but only when not doing it cuts into their profits.

The democrat party only chose to ban tik tok because they could not control it's narrative. The owners chose to allow it to be a free speech platform for either side to express their opinions/findings.
The same thing happened with Elon Musk's X... They also threatened that if they could not take it away for themselves they would simply shut it down until they could. But they went the extra mile with him. Claiming they would take Tesla and all his companies that he owns.
I believe there will come a day that things aren't necessarily banned. But they're taken over with a single sided narrative. Though I believe we wont see that for at least 12 years. Hopefully longer though. But they've basically stated their intentions with it. Very loud and clear. If they can't control it, they don't want you to have access to it. This is the problem with "Big government" they continue to diminish your freedoms over everything, to the point you don't have a say or a choice in the matter.

@AuRevoir Elon don’t need to be nowhere dealing with the world or making decisions lol
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
@TrashCat A ban proposal is different than what the democrats implemented. Trump proposed just a straight up ban. Democrats sought to control narratives, to force propaganda with the platforms. And they did it not only with Tik Tok in their hopeful plans. But it's already been proven that they succeeded in forcing their narratives for years on Twitter and on Facebook. That's an extremely stark contrast between the two.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
@greennature He's the one who has made the most technological advancements that many people are in use of now. If you've ever even used paypal once, and found it convenient. Elon musk was a part of that too. I don't feel people's arguments with that hold much weight when they make statements which only sound like they come from a place of either ignorance or being a hater, for haters sake...
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
Only under the Trump Administration they first went after Craigslist for their dating site crushing the personal ads and it was not about sex trafficking after all they left all the for-profit sites intact then they went after tick tock which I understand because of the foreign government security risk but in the future they may just indeed go after free sites of social self-expression
I think it would be a good idea if people were far less inclined to believe and/or rely on social media. But, I very much doubt that is going away. It's far too easy for the powers that be to manipulate people with it for them to ever let it go.

I am older than you and i remember before the internet and mobile phones. People talked and kids played. The world has changed but not for the better i think. Maybe i am just to old now for this

no, that would be taking things too far, tiktok should go, but not the likes of facebook where people use it to keep in touch with family and friends.
greennature · 31-35, F
@darkmere1983 now that part is agreeable but how to get the bs off there? Like live streaming murders and etc

Yes, humans abuse and destroy everything. Take humans out of the equation and the world/earth would be beautiful once again as it was in the beginning.
I wish they would. We would all be so much better off if they did.

@HumanEarth John Wick by far is the dumbest character I ever saw Keanu portray, and I thought 47 Ronin was bad. By the law of odds, he should not have survived his first gunfight in the first movie.

whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
They wont ban social media.. It is too good a tool to keep watch on people and what they think when their guard is down, so you know who to monitor more closely. Of course, troublemakers can be banned individiually..Thats how it is done...😷
greennature · 31-35, F
@whowasthatmaskedman oh yeah I forgot about first 48 lol people be leaving all the evidence up
spjennifer · 61-69, T
What most of these geezers don't understand is that young people will find a way around the ban within a day or two. Most old folks don't understand technology so they rail against it, regardless of whether it's good or bad. We might also see one of our Oligarchs (Muskie, Bezos or Suckerberg) trying to buy Ticky Tok but it will be far too late, the youngsters will have already abandoned it and migrated to somewhere else...
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
It more or less happens in some authoritarian countries (China, Russia) and they achieve that on the back of a perverted understanding of patriotism which means you must only listen to your leaders.
We all could use a break from it

The world only seemed simple because people were limited by geography, it's no more out of control than any other time period. The stuff you see on the internet isn't a free for all, it just looks more concentrated because people from all over the world could participate but in reality it's not a lot.

more likely it'll be a ban on social media not controlled by our government as we're more likely to see stuff on it that they don't want us to see
hunkalove · 61-69, M
The ban on the TickingTock is more about who owns it than content.
TrashCat · M
I believe there will not be a complete ban. You will still enjoy the freedom of speech if it aligns with with the 4th Reich
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@TrashCat The Chinese have this "social credit" system. Where if you say the right things in social media and otherwise display the right attitudes in various ways you have a higher rating and more privileges. Even travel and visa applications are viewed more favourably. Americans are used to that with likes and followers on Twitski and Faceplant..😷
swirlie · F
TikTok will not be banned in Canada because Canada is a free country.
And speaking of a free country, did you know that "Pornhub" is a Canadian media company that operates from a Canadian website?
You would never find a website like Pornhub operating in the USA because the USA is not a free country, which is also why TikTok will be banned in the USA.
Orson Wells, please take a bow. You were right old boy, you were right!

@swirlie I agree and porn hub is boring now. It’s banned in some states but people just be using vpns.
Maybe they should do a temporarily ban and just give it all a rest for a bit.

greennature · 31-35, F
@dale74 I agree but it needs to be guidelines into who can use social media and who can’t. For example, it was a time on social media where it required your college email address and someone in the facebook group had to verify you

No, not a chance. Donald J. Trump's website called "Truth Social" is a website that was designed and organized by Donald's son Baron who manages the website AND it's content.
Any Trump rhetoric that you see on that website that is coming from the cellphone of DJ Trump are actually posts that are created and posted by his son Baron on behalf of his father.
