@swirlie No, I mean the effect it has on society as whole. I might go away from social media and avoid news but it would still leak through other people.

It would leak through other people because they are telling you what they are reading and listening to on the internet. The secret is to avoid people who carry a cellphone in their hand, especially if they have a pocket that's big enough to fit the stupid thing but they carry it anyway.

I know! When I was a kid growing up on the farm my Dad would tell me that my belly button looks like the inflation tube on the back wheel of his tractor!
