One thing I learned is not to take a cat to the new place late in the day. They need time to get oriented and adjusted in their new environment. The first time I did it my cat was afraid to go to the bathroom and use the litter box. He stayed close to me even that night and peed on my pillow because of it. The second time it was my daughter that did it with our cat. She wanted to wait till everything was in the apartment and situated before bringing our cat home. I had warned her against it but she did it anyway and the cat peed on her pillow that night. They want the lights left on all night long if you wait too long to bring them to the new place.

Craigslist allows you to post "Curb Alerts" under Free stuff. You can set things outside on the curb by the street, and the bargain hounds will pick it bare within an hour.

You can also find inexpensive moving help on Craigslist. I hired a couple of girls to help me pack, and paid them $10 an hour, which they were happy to get. They were nice girls, too! I tipped them with some of my jewelry!

I also hired some strong young guys to help me move boxes onto and off my rental truck, both in Plymouth and in Michigan, where I was moving at the time. I hired four of them, so the work went fast! I paid them $20 an hour because moving is hard work!

I was VERY careful when labeling boxes. I put all my valuable stuff and jewelry in a box that I labeled "Bathroom Cleaning Supplies". I put my medications in a box labeled, "Eyeglass cleaner and wipes, extra eyeglasses."

I wasn't as careful with my books, and I lost ALL of my hardbound JRR Tolkien books in the move.

You can also rent a "POD", and carry things out to the Pod bit by bit, taking your time. Then the Pod company will send a truck when you are done and carry the Pod to your new home, where you can unpack it at your leisure.

I didn't do that. I was moving TWO households, so I scoped out the cheapest trucks available and ended up with Rider. I rented TWO trucks from them, and hired a retired police officer from Plymouth whose sideline was driving trucks long distance one way. All I had to do was pay him a base fee and give him a return airline ticket. I drove the second truck.

@4meAndyou I will ask my family to help me move, thankfully I know they will help us 🥹 Labeling valuables as something else is really smart, thanks!😍

Right now I'm stressed because our landlord will come next week with a tax man and someone to take pictures, I don't want my personal things on an add, so I want to get as much as possible packed and moved before they come 😩 But I'm trying to not rush it, cause I want to get rid of some stuff too and not pack things I won't need or don't want anymore🥹

@Cassieeee Curb alert.

Donate things for the homeless or women and kids that have been victims of domestic abuse.

An old coat can keep a homeless person warm for the winter. When I think like this I tend to give more and better stuff.

Good luck in your new place.
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@tobynshorty I love that. We usually donate clothes and stuff twice a year when we do a season switch and change out our closet. I will be donating some of it tho 🥹

I hope it goes well. Blondliy just moved her apt, she hired movers. She may be able to offer you better suggestions tips.. are you doing it by yourself?
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@Fieldmaster No, with my husband, but he's working fulltime so I'll do most of the packing 🥹
Fieldmaster · 46-50, M
@Cassieeee I would make a list, pack boxes based on location and which ones would need to be used first and last etc. Keep the clothes on hangers, if possible.
Best of luck.. 🍀

Label everything... It might seem annoying but when you're unpacking it will be so helpful
If you have not in a while .. use your packing time to purge things you no longer want/need/use. Sell, donate or pitch what you don't need. Less to deal with in the move and maybe some $$ in your pocket.

Mark boxes w the rooms to be placed in at the new home.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
get a sandwich bag and put the nuts, screws and bolts for your table/desk/bed etc in it and sellotape it to what it belongs to.
also write on the boxes which room it's for.
Cigarguy · M
Hire a mover and find a friend that was ocd to help you pack. Lol
Start early and take your time.
Don't try and pack your whole house in one day
Nanori · F
Don't hold back when it comes to throwing away stuff 🫡
I always pack the kitchen first, the possible hunger motivates everyone to work faster 👀
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Nanori You should really write a book, so women around the world can learn from your wisdom. 🧘
@Kwek00 We don't need more women like Nanori... Or maybe we deserve it idk
Send the children to their grandparents. And any pets.

Leave as much of it to the wife as possible, except any heavy lifting, but don’t tolerate any more than two suggestions of where the sofa can go.
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@AdmiralPrune I am the wife 😂
If you haven't used it for 12 months or more, you don't need it so put it in the donations box. Moving house is an ideal opportunity to get rid of clutter
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@RodneyTrotterBeatTheSWBan That's so true, but what if I go thru stuff and find things that I just haven't used cause I forgot I had it🥹
Penny · 46-50, F
make sure to label boxes really well so youre not hunting for stuff when it comes time to unpack. leave clothes on hangers if you hang them up. use towels and clothes like tshirts to protect breakables.
Realifecuckold · 61-69, M
Call a mover. They will do everything. Please don't move yourself. You're not seventeen anymore.
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@Realifecuckold Heeey, I'm not seventy either 🥹 Even tho my body acts like it sometimes😂
Teslin · M
Hire someone and video everything.
I hate moving.
Best of luck.
Iwillwait · M
Stay calm, remember the best is yet to come.
SlippingAway · 46-50, F
If you can pay for movers do it. It's such a pain in the ass, it's worth the expense.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
Dispose of things you don't need. No sense moving detritus.

And just worry about one box at a time.
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@Pretzel One at a time? 😩 I have like 4 half packed with different stuff in em 😂
Pretzel · 70-79, M
@Cassieeee as you start packing a box. Ask yourself if it has sentimental value

Or if you have used it lately. Or will use it

When in doubt pack it. You can dispose of it later when you unpack
Lilyb · 22-25, F
The dump is your friend
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@forestgirl That's what I wanna do! But I can't afford it right now..
forestgirl · 46-50, F
@Cassieeee I understand that completely. I hope you can fo that soon. It made a difference. Bought clothes my ex hated me buying. Lol

@Cassieeee Anything you don't want, you can donate to a shelter and feel good about helping others while lightening your load.
