If Britan never had a colonial period, what language do you think you would speak?

Anglo Saxon.

The Anglo-Saxons were a Germanic cultural group who settled in England from the 5th century and shaped early medieval English society, language, and governance.

Britain did. Twice. The Romans left a legacy of Latin in the language. And the Norman conquest of William in 1066 gave us an overlay of French, particularly for our food animals. Such as Beef and Pork.😷

Spanish. If the English hadn't done it, Spain would have.

@Waveney i thought english amd french came from latin and german was gealic?
Waveney · 41-45, M
@GuyWithOpinions No. English is a Germanic language. Its closest relative is Dutch (and a language called Friesian) and it's in the same family as German, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages except Finnish. French is derived from Latin, but modern English is also derived from norman French, or at least the vocabulary is (e.g., words ending in -ible, -able, -ation, ition, etc.).

Gaelic, you're thinking of Celtic, which includes Irish and Welsh. Indo-European, but not German or Latin-based.

@Waveney i understood English German Ditch were classed as Tuetonic ( might have misspelled that)

That would probably mean that neither of my parents' families would have come to America from Italy. So, assuming that my parents would have somehow met over there and conceived me, I would be speaking a southern Italian dialect.
I wouldn't exist
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@JonLosAngeles66 you think your parents wouldnt have met if there wasnt a colony?
@GuyWithOpinions no. My father's family came over on the Mayflower and later at the second wave of the Irish diaspora. My mother's family came over from the first wave of the Irish famine. Without colonialism neither would have happened.

Spanish or French i imagine as they liked to invade and raid back in the day.
Unless of course the Vikings decided to hang around longer than they did our way.
Probably Welsh, Scottish Gaelic or German

Some form of Celtic or German (Welsh, Irish, German on my father's side) or Portuguese (my mother's side).

English with an accent.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Degbeme Of course, the British would say that you now are speaking English with an accent! 🙂
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@DrWatson I have two English friends that have heard me and they do say I have an accent. We don`t have accents. 🤭
